How to care for your bonsai
Bonsai, a delight in miniature gadening. How to instructions on choosing plants and methods employed in growing Bonsai. Great tips for beginners.
Bonsai, gardening on a miniature scale, is a wonderful alternative if you have limited space. Bonsai, literally meaning Bon (tray) Sai (plant) was begun around the third century B.C. by the Chinese. Later adopted and developed into an art form by the Japanese. Pronounced Bahn Sy' it is a way to grow many different kinds of plants indoors or out all in containers. America discovered this gardening delight approximately 50 years ago. Bonsai plants may be cultivated using many different species. Evergreens such as ficus, natal plum, or flowering types as azaleas, apricot, plum, and pomegranate, or outdoor species of conifers, spruce or pine trees are all suitable for growing in containers, pruning, and the art of wiring the plant to change its appearance. The basics of how to grow your own Bonsai are relatively simple. Choosing the plant is the most important. Consider if it is going to be outdoors or indoors, the amount of light available and the temperature or humidity of the locale its place in. For outdoors you would want to use the more hardy plant materials as the conifers. Pine and spruce are the most common. Indoors you can choose the more tropical plants, as the ficus and natal plum. For the flowering species or deciduous plants a mixture of both indoor and outdoors at the time of seasons is a good choice, as you can alternate by taking them inside during the winter months and when all danger of frost is removed, they can go outdoors for sunlight and fresh air.

Ulmus americana U. americana from Central Florida and have leaves of 1 1/2 inches that be reduced to well under one inch in bonsai situations. The ultimate size of the tree is also much less, about 30 feet. It is undoubtedly a subspeices, but we have been unable to positively identify it as such. It is unsurpassed for small bonsai, attaining an amazing twigginess in just a few short years. Since the parent plants are Florida natives, we are uncertain of the cold hardiness, although this not a problem for bonsai, which are protected anyway. Cutting grown plants.

People worldwide are interested in Japanese gardens. But often the principles behind Japanese gardens are misunderstood by non-natives. In the West, showy flowers have become central in gardening. In Japanese gardens, emphasis is placed on form, foliage and structures; the result is a study in simplicity. Chinese Feng Shui is also currently popular in some Western gardening circles.

Bonsai Basics
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-202

A well-developed bonsai offers great architecture and character.
A bonsai's visual strength and character are exemplified by massive surface roots, a large trunk, interesting bends, shapes and twists and the placement of limbs (even dead ones).
Bigger bonsai aren't necessarily older specimens. The plant on the left is six years old; the one on the right is more than 10 years old.
Figure A Figure B The difference between a bonsai and any other potted plant, says expert Michael Raska, is that a bonsai has been artistically styled over time to look like a tree in nature but in miniature form. Getting started with bonsaithe art of growing dwarfed, ornamentally shaped trees and shrubs in shallow potsis pretty simple, explains Raska, who owns a bonsai nursery in Oklahoma that houses up to 30,000 specimens. Growing bonsai plants takes commitment, rather than a lot of work. Consequently, he says, people tend to form bonds with their bonsai. "If a ficus gets yellow, you chuck it out the door and get another one. But with a bonsai, you may have 10 or 20 years' worth of effort invested in training and growing that tree. That's why bonsai plants are handed down from family member to family member in the Orient: they are precious parts of the family, as much as a pet would be."

The Basics of Bonsai Care
The Insider's Garden : Episode TIG-201

This blooming rosemary plant, which may live for more than 100 years, has been trained into the weeping style of bonsai. Bonsai, or "tree in a pot," is the Japanese art of miniaturizing trees and shrubs. Bonsai plants, which often live more than 100 years, can make unusual and beautiful additions to indoor decor. (Trees and shrubs that are miniaturized generally grow outdoors, but they can be brought inside for the weekend or other times when you will be spending more time inside.) Here are some tips for caring for bonsai in your home:
  • Bonsai have small, confined root systems and need to be watered more frequently than a regular houseplant. They should be watered at least once a day, perhaps more often in an extremely dry environment or during the winter when heating systems dry the air.
  • Use a general fertilizer or one specially formulated for bonsai in a 6-4-3 ratio. If it's soluble, dilute the fertilizer in water before applying. A granular fertilizer can be distributed around the base. Alternate fertilizers occasionally.

AN INTRODUCTION TO A REPORT ON A SECOND SERIES OF BONSAI CLASSES By Angela Jones Tillman Silk Hope School, Siler City, North Carolina) and David W. Fukumoto (Fuku-Bonsai, Kurtistown, Hawaii)
Somehow amidst our hectic schedules, we put together a condensed version of the first series of classes and this was published in Bonsai Clubs International's Bonsai Magazine and its reproduced below (as submitted):
Angela's article was published in Bonsai Clubs International's BONSAI MAGAZINE ; September-October 2003; Volume 42, Number 5 © Bonsai Clubs International 2003 The "Back To School" issue honored America's premier master bonsai teacher John Yoshio Naka on the cover and in a feature photo-article. In May of 2001 with my goal to integrate science with some type of art, I embarked on my most enriching endeavor. Bonsai immediately came to mind and my search on the Internet discovered Fuku-Bonsai and their True Indoor Bonsaiä . My principal recommended seeking a Chatham Education Foundation creative teaching grant; and because of the uniqueness of a houseplant bonsai lesson, the foundation funded the entire project! WHAT IS BONSAI? While waiting for our 60 kits to arrive, I asked the eighth graders (in two classes) what they thought of when they heard the word "bonsai"? "Tiny trees!" exclaimed one student. "Takes a lot of patience", replied another. Our lively discussion addressed several myths and facts. Articles from magazines, books from our library, and the Fuku-Bonsai website were indispensable parts of our knowledge base.

Figure E Bonsai is the art of growing miniature trees in decorative pots. Bonsai can live for more than 100 years, and are passed down from generation to generation. For indoor bonsai trees, select tropical plants that are suitable for indoor cultivation. Brush cherry ( Syzygium paniculatum ) is often used for indoor bonsai plants. The new foliage is bright green, maturing to a rich green or sometimes copper. It produces small white flowers in the summer and berries in the fall. Brush cherry requires bright light. Sheflera, too, make worthy indoor bonsai ( figure A ), and like lots of light but make sure it's indirect. To keep bonsai plants small, gardeners prune as needed and keep their trees pot-bound and growing in soil mixes that are relatively low in organic matter. The soil mix should be a blend of peat moss, perlite and limestone with a small amount of slow-release fertilizer and a handful of water-holding polymer crystals. Crush the crystals before adding them to the soil mix so the particles will be very small. Bonsai plants need constant monitoring for moisture and may need to be watered daily. Choose a decorative shallow pot for displaying bonsai plants ( figure B ). Make sure that it has drainage holes and a matching saucer to catch water. Cover the drain holes with a piece of plastic window screen, then place a small amount of the soil mix in the bottom of the pot. Make sure that the tree is well watered before you begin the transplanting process.

Paul James, host of HGTV's Gardening by the Yard , examines Michael Raska's bonsai collection.
Flowering plants such as this crabapple make good bonsai specimens.
Once the branches are wrapped in copper wire, they can be bent gently to the desired shape.
Getting started in the ancient art of bonsai is fairly simple, says bonsai expert Michael Raska. You can buy an already trained specimen for $1,500 to $5,000 or more, or you can buy a plant and pot from a nursery and train it yourself. Bonsai plants are true outdoor plants and need the same things full-size landscape trees and shrubs do: sunshine, good air circulation, regular watering and fertilizer. Because they're grown in relatively small containers, they need protection from extreme cold and drying winds. A number of flowering plants make excellent bonsai specimens. Azaleas and crabapples are good examples. After making a few cuts to get rid of excess branches, begin wrapping copper wire around the tree's trunk to shape it, being careful not to wrap the wire too tightly. Next, wrap the remaining five or six branches with thinner copper wire, bending them slightly to achieve the desired form. Having completed the pruning process, pick a pot, and plant the bonsai.

    Art of Bonsai
Bonsai is an art form that stems from ancient, oriental culture, originating in China and developed by the Japanese. In the 13th century, the Japanese collected and potted wild trees that had been dwarfed by nature. These naturally formed miniatures were some of the first bonsai. When demand for the small trees outgrew the supply, Japanese gardeners began to train bonsai from native trees. They shaped the trees to give them the illusion of age. The art of bonsai, as developed in America, is much freer in concept and style than Japanese bonsai. Not all plants are equally effective as bonsai. To produce a realistic illusion of a mature tree, all parts of the ideal bonsai trunk, branches, twigs, leaves, flowers, fruits, buds, roots should be in perfect scale with the size of the tree. Plants used for bonsai should have small leaves or leaves that become small under bonsai culture. Plants with overly large leaves, such as the avocado, will look out of proportion if chosen for bonsai. Sycamores also develop leaves that are too large. Certain species of both maple and oak trees usually respond well to bonsai culture and develop leaves that are in proportion. Among the plants with small leaves and needles appropriate for bonsai are spruce, pine, zelkova, and pomegranate.
