Frequently Asked Questions...
Beginner at Bonsai. I have just planted the seeds for my first Bonsai tree. I'm using Japanese Black Pine seeds and have them planted in a shallow, unglazed pot. I'm growing them inside and using a plastic bag for a green house effect(as I've heard you should do). So now I have a couple of questions:
  • 1) Is it okay to grow it as I'm growing it?
  • 2) What "type" of Bonsai can I create from these growing conditions?
  • 3) How hard is this to screw up?(I'm very nervous about destroying the plant)
Thank you so much, Brandy
It's great to know that you've taken an interest in bonsai - it's a fascinating hobby. The only problem with the way that you're approaching it however, is that you won't have a genuine bonsai for many years to come using the method that you're currently using - as you're not actually working with a plant to make into a bonsai, but waiting for plants to grow so that you can train them. As you well know, seeds take a relatively long time to germinate and become a proper plant to use for bonsai - with preferably a 1/2-1'' (1-2cm) diameter trunk (unless you want to do mini-bonsai which are about 4" high and a totally different practice). Because of this, it may be a good idea to take the germinated black pine seedlings from the unglazed bonsai pot and transfer them to individual, ordinary plastic nursery pots with a sandy, well-drained soil mix. This will make them stronger trees and not inhibit their growth which would prevent you being able to train them properly later.

T he art of BONSAI started in the orient centuries ago. First it was developed by the Chinese and later by the Japanese. Today the bonsai culture is enjoyed worldwide. An understanding of the basic plant requirements makes it possible to grow the bonsai of your choice where and when you want it. Some of these are: Temperature
Bonsai Trees are meant to be outdoors. They may be taken inside the home for one to two days at a time but should be rotated back to a well-ventilated location outside. If the desire is to maintain the bonsai inside the home all the time, then it is recommended several trees be maintained so they may be rotated. Light
Filtered (shaded) natural light is advised. Avoid direct sunlight if adequate ventilation cannot be provided. Water
Keep soil moist, not wet. An overly watered plant is as unhappy as a dry one. An effective watering method is to soak the tree in water - filled tub and allowing the water to dray. In the summer, daily water application may be necessary. During the colder months, watering every third day may be all that is needed. Trees contained in smaller and shallower pots need more frequent watering. Misting the foliage is also beneficial. Feeding
Feed sparingly. Plant food of one-fourth the recommended strength at six weeks intervals during the growing period is sufficient. The tree is "at rest" November through February and fertilizing is not necessary.

The popular Dwarf Schefflera Arboricola Lava Rock Plantings are ideal starter stock for those wanting to grow indoor bonsai. It meets the two basic rules for selecting starter stock:
It is a proven house plant to grow indoors, while many traditional bonsai trees are “outdoor” plants, making them more difficult for the beginner.
Each plant is trained for 2-4 years before rock planting, so it already has some "character," with branches and established surface and/or aerial roots. The plant is also much more durable.
For more detailed growing instructions, and visitor information, go to the Fuku-Bonsai website or check out our Bonsai book selections from Amazon.com.
The Schefflera Lava Rock Plantings which can be ordered below, are shipped directly by Fuku-Bonsai with their standard limited warranty: "Fuku-Bonsai guarantees satisfaction and safe arrival on all items sent directly from their nursery; if received in damaged or unsatisfactory condition, return within 10 days by postpaid airmail for refund or replacement. 3813 - Caring for Bonsai Plants
Bonsai plants have become very popular to purchase for oneself or to give as gifts. Unfortunately many die due to improper care. Primary to determining how to care for your bonsai plant is to first determine whether your plant is a tropical or subtropical indoor plant or a hardy, outdoor one. Plants, such as, maples, pines, junipers and boxwoods are outdoor hardy plants and their care differs from indoor tropical plants such as weeping fig, dwarf pomegranate, natal plum, rosemary and Serissa. Indoor plants are best grown indoors as house plants but may be set out of doors for the summer as you would other indoor plants. Hardy, outdoor plants on the other hand, require outdoor growing conditions for best growth. They should be brought indoors for only short periods of time for display and then returned to their outdoor growing area. Trying to grow a hardy, outdoor bonsai plant indoors will most likely result in failure unless you are able to replicate outdoor conditions. Whether you are growing indoor or outdoor plants, proper light is very important. Most outdoor plants require good light. Full morning sun and some afternoon shade is ideal for most plants but pines and junipers can tolerate full sun all day. Indoor bonsai plants should also receive good light. Most will require a south or east facing window. A good indoor plant book can provide you with light requirements for various indoor plants.
