Everybody loves the look of a beautiful Bonsai dish landscape, but most of us feel that this aspect of gardening is not something we can do successfully. Indeed, I hazard a guess that a few of us have tried buying a Bonsai once or twice, only to have a dead mini-tree on our hands within a short period of time. Growing Bonsai is probably not for the once a week houseplant waterer who skips a week every now and then, but for those willing to put a little effort into it, the Art of Bonsai can be an incredibly creative and rewarding leisure-time gardening activity, especially for those in the colder areas who are cooped up in the house through the long winter months. With the proper care and watering, most Bonsai specimens can live for years - in Asia they are even passed from generation to generation as family heirlooms. Accordingly, this page is devoted to Bonsai and all the issues related to successfully growing it, including plant choices, care, feeding, watering, and designing miniature landscapes. New pages will be added regularly, so do Bookmark and return often for upcoming step-by-step instructions for successful Bonsai gardening!

Tips for a healthy tree
The soil you use affects rooting, feeding, watering and transpiration; it is where half your tree lives so this is our second biggest consideration in maintaining your bonsai. While the needs of individual species vary greatly a good rule of thumb is 30% grit, 70% humus for deciduous trees, and 70% grit, 30% humus for evergreen needled plants, but these are just general guidelines.

The front garden borders are filled with narcissus for spring colour and 90 different hardy bush fuchsias for summer and autumn. The rear garden borders are filled with bulbs and hardy flowering perennials. It's crammed full of plants, so it's easy to maintain, i've always said the more plants you have the less weeds you get.

People worldwide are interested in Japanese gardens. But often the principles behind Japanese gardens are misunderstood by non-natives. In the West, showy flowers have become central in gardening. In Japanese gardens, emphasis is placed on form, foliage and structures; the result is a study in simplicity. Chinese Feng Shui is also currently popular in some Western gardening circles.

National Bonsai and Penjing Museum Timeless Trees The miniature masterpieces that we call bonsai and penjing are the pinnacle of gardening skill, and the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum has one of the largest collections of these timeless trees in North America. The Japanese art of bonsai, and its precursor, the Chinese art of penjing, are rooted in the traditions of Asian culture. The placement of branches, styling, and the pot all convey deep symbolism and reverence for nature. The National Bonsai and Penjing Museum began when Japanese bonsai enthusiasts in the Nippon Bonsai Association donated 53 bonsai to the people of the United States to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976. The collection has grown steadily with the addition of pieces from American bonsai masters and penjing from China. Today, three pavilions house about 150 plants. The International Pavilion is a focal point that celebrates the related art forms of viewing stones and ikebana, a Japanese style of flower arranging. Throughout the year, you may also find exhibits featuring the work of local bonsai enthusiasts and pieces from the permanent collection with special seasonal interest in the International Pavilion. Be sure to also vist our online Bonsai Virtual Tour The concept of an internationally acclaimed collection of bonsai and penjing was conceived by former Arboretum Director Dr. John Creech in 1972. In 1976, the Nippon Bonsai Association of Japan bestowed on the American people a gift of 53 bonsai and six viewing stones. The Japanese Pavilion was constructed as a result, and became the home of the new specimens. The collection grew again in 1986 with the gift of Chinese penjing from Dr. Yee-sun Wu and Shu-ying Lui. The construction of the Dr. Yee-sun Wu Chinese Pavilion recognizes this important gift and provides a home where his gift can be properly displayed. The growing popularity of bonsai in North America was recognized with the construction of the John Naka North American Pavilion. In it resides one of the most extensive and diverse collections of bonsai from masters in North America, including American master John Naka's

by Susan Amoy Succulent plants are fascinating in their diversity of form. In the wild, they range from towering trees, such as Moringa ovalifolia, to inch-high "living stones," like Lithops karasmontana. Many succulents, such as aloes, sedums, and kalanchoes, have become staples in the American garden and home. Now there is growing interest in applying bonsai techniques to succulents. Though it may seem like an odd matchup, bonsai practice can contribute much to our knowledge of succulent species, and succulents make interesting and unusual additions to bonsai collections. Adult Moringa ovalifolia tree in the wild, Namibia. Bonsai is an ancient art form that seeks to re-create nature in miniature. It was born out of a deep appreciation for the natural world and a desire to convey the spiritual power and beauty of the larger landscape to more confined domestic spaces. Its practitioners developed proven methods for pruning and shaping plant specimens to exhibit the forms of adult trees molded by their natural environments. There are many reasons why succulents make ideal subjects for bonsai. Native to tropical and semitropical arid regions around the globe, many species are naturally small or undergo "dwarfing" in the wild due to harsh conditions. Growing slowly from crevices and rocky ground and enduring abrasive winds, erratic water supply, dramatic fluctuations in daily temperature, browsing by animals, bright sunlight, and thin, fast-draining soil, mature succulents can actually end up looking like bonsai.

Feng shui masters are now routinely consulted by architects and interior designers, and bonsai gardening continues to fascinate and inspire. In CREATING BONSAI LANDSCAPES, the spirit of the East is recreated in 25 stunning miniature landscapes that not only are a delight to look at but also lend a harmonizing and soothing force to any environment. Su Chin Ee works with a Chinese form of bonsai art known as penjing - which literally translates as "landscape in a pot or dish" - to create her designs. The art of bonsai was developed as a means to please the ancestors so that they would bestow blessings and wealth for generations to come. Su explains how each bonsai landscape in the book conveys different elements of the original eastern philosophy and themes.
