The miniature masterpieces that we call bonsai and penjing are the pinnacle of gardening skill, and the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum has one of the largest collections of these timeless trees in North America. The Japanese art of bonsai, and its precursor, the Chinese art of penjing, are rooted in the traditions of Asian culture. The placement of branches, styling, and the pot all convey deep symbolism and reverence for nature. The National Bonsai and Penjing Museum, established in 1976, is the most comprehensive of it's kind in North America. It is dedicated to the display, education and scholarly study of bonsai and related art forms. The National Bonsai and Penjing Museum is undoubtedly one of Washington's key attractions for plant lovers. We provide for you here a 'short' Virtual Tour of the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum. You are invited to start at the begining and follow the "slides" through the Ellen Gordon Allan Entrance Garden, the Cryptomeria Walk, the International Pavilion, the Chinese Pavilion, the Japanese Stroll Garden, the Japanese Pavilion, the North American Pavilion, the Tropical Conservatory, and the Lecture/Demonstration Area. If you prefer, and/or are a return visitor, you are welcome to start at a specific pavilion or garden, or even at any point along the path. Virtual Tour Options:

    episode WKG-206 advertisement
    Figure A
    Figure B
Bonsai ( figure A ) is the art of maintaining a normal-size plant in miniature form. The plant must be carefully and regularly pruned to expose its center structure and showcase its natural branching habits. The smaller the leaf, the better suited the plant will be as a bonsai specimen. The practice of bonsai is considered to be a peaceful and relaxing hobby.
    • In this example, Gilmer uses miniature brush cherry ( Eugenia Myrtifolia Nanum ), which has the look of bonsai but is more maintainable. Alternate plants for bonsai are Japanese garden juniper, Japanese maple or black pine. Moss is used at the base of the plant to create a clean edge.
    • Bonsai planters are characterized by the pot feet that lift them up slightly in their surroundings.
If you have a taste for bamboo shoots ( figure B ), which are a staple of many Asian dishes, you may want to try harvesting your own. Bamboo should be harvested while it is still light yellow and belowground, as they begin to harden as they grow out of the soil line. To get an edible piece of bamboo shoot, you simply dig up the shoot, trim the base and peel a section to eat!

    Bonsai Basics
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-202

A well-developed bonsai offers great architecture and character.
A bonsai's visual strength and character are exemplified by massive surface roots, a large trunk, interesting bends, shapes and twists and the placement of limbs (even dead ones).
Bigger bonsai aren't necessarily older specimens. The plant on the left is six years old; the one on the right is more than 10 years old.
Figure A Figure B The difference between a bonsai and any other potted plant, says expert Michael Raska, is that a bonsai has been artistically styled over time to look like a tree in nature but in miniature form. Getting started with bonsaithe art of growing dwarfed, ornamentally shaped trees and shrubs in shallow potsis pretty simple, explains Raska, who owns a bonsai nursery in Oklahoma that houses up to 30,000 specimens. Growing bonsai plants takes commitment, rather than a lot of work. Consequently, he says, people tend to form bonds with their bonsai. "If a ficus gets yellow, you chuck it out the door and get another one. But with a bonsai, you may have 10 or 20 years' worth of effort invested in training and growing that tree. That's why bonsai plants are handed down from family member to family member in the Orient: they are precious parts of the family, as much as a pet would be."

    Displaying Bonsai
    The Insider's Garden : Episode TIG-201

To create the look of an old tree with a younger plant, bonsai trains branches to droop downward, instead of growing upward like a young tree.
This pomegranate tree has many trunks coming from the same source and produces flowers and fruits. Its wider stance makes it an attractive choice for the dining room table.
Adding a layer of moss at the base of a bonsai tree enhances the natural look of the tree by giving the illusion of grass.
This bonsai is a standard apple tree that produces full-sized fruit. The proper display of your unique bonsai plant can enhance its beauty. Consider the following:
    • If a plant produces colorful blooms and fruit, try potting it in a glazed pot of a complementary color.
    • The height at which you present your bonsai is important. Try showcasing it on the mantle or other raised platform, and try pairing your plant with a striking dish behind to enhance the vignette.

    MY GARDEN: Bonsai
Tim Vivoda is a bonsai enthusiast. This is his story.
My name is Tim Vivoda. I grow bonsai for a living. It started as a hobby when I was eight years old. I found a library book in a library at Huntingdale Primary School and was fascinated with this little tree that was on the front cover. I was just totally fascinated with the fact that you could actually work on something that is always changing - it's living sculpture.
I have a tattoo of the first bonsai I grew. It's a juniper tree. I was 10 years old when I grew the tree.
The word bonsai comes from "bon" which means tray and "sai" which means plant. It originated in Egypt thousands of years ago and moved to China and the Japanese perfected the art of bonsai.
There are five basic styles of bonsai created by the Japanese. The first is the informal upright, where a trunk line zigzags up into the top of the tree. There are branches on the externals of each bend. That's the most important thing. The second is the windswept or slanting style. The slanting style is basically a tree that's been blown by the wind, so the branches on one side are actually shorter than the other. The third style is the formal upright which has a straight trunk that tapers at the top.
The next style is called the semi cascade. Imagine the tree is on the side of a cliff, hanging over and this doesn't exceed the pot's limitations. And finally the last style is called the full cascade. The full cascade is actually a tree that exceeds the pot limitations.
