BONSAI
What is Bonsai?
Basic styles
Bonsai can be loosely divided into tropical plants, deciduous shrubs and evergreens. There are several classifications, such as formal upright, informal upright, cascade and windswept.
Following are five styles that seem to be agreed upon basic or fundamental designs. Formal Upright (Chokkan)
In a formal upright style, the trunk is kept very straight and the tree has a very balanced distribution of branches. The first branch should be the most developed and should be positioned roughly at one-third the height of the tree. Informal Upright (Moyogi)
Informal uprights are one of the most common styles. This is the most basic design wherein the idea is to develop a single line of the trunk, starting from the roots reaching the apex while producing a natural structure of branches and foliage. In this style there should be little or no empty spaces. Most deciduous trees will be best suited to informal upright styles. Slanting (Shakan) The word Slanting denotes the direction in which the tree's trunk moves. A Shakan bonsai will have a very distinctive slant, with a properly balanced movement of the trunk and placement of the branches so that the tree does not appear to be lopsided.

    Tips for Fall: Mulch
One of the chores that befall every gardener, often several times a year, is the laborious task of mulching. While many of us view this as an odious task best ranked with mucking stables or raking leaves (I rank these two very closely), I view this mission as my way of helping Mother Nature herself improve my garden. In my mind there is no better way to change the soil in your garden than mulching; not raining fertilizer and chemicals upon it, not amending soil, and no, especially not plowing, tilling, or cultivating. Mulching is the finest thing you can do for a garden bed and I will use the rest of this space to put to rest any doubts you may have as to the veracity of that statement... Read more

Creating Bonsai Landscapes: 18 Miniature Garden Projects
    Su Chin Ee,Colin Lewis
Western home and garden design has been increasingly influenced in recent years by ancient Eastern traditions. Feng shui masters are now routinely consulted by architects and interior designers, and bonsai gardening continues to fascinate and inspire. In CREATING BONSAI LANDSCAPES, the spirit of the East is recreated in 25 stunning miniature landscapes that not only are a delight to look at but also lend a harmonizing and soothing force to any environment. Su Chin Ee works with a Chinese form of bonsai art known as penjing - which literally translates as "landscape in a pot or dish" - to create her designs. The art of bonsai was developed as a means to please the ancestors so that they would bestow blessings and wealth for generations to come. Su explains how each bonsai landscape in the book conveys different elements of the original eastern philosophy and themes.

    Bonsai
Anon wrote~ I love bonsai and bought a little one, but I have no clue how to grow them! A. What follows is a general outline of the various procedures used by the staff of the Arnold Arboretum to maintain the Larz Anderson bonsai collection in a healthy condition. REPOTTING: The smaller the pot, the more frequently the plant needs repotting. This procedure is best done in early spring, mid-to late March, before the plant shows any signs of growth. The plant is removed from its container, and approximately two to three centimeters (one inch, more or less) of roots, plus their attached soil, are removed all around the sides and bottom of the root ball. Any roots thicker than a pencil are cut away to encourage the development of small feeder roots. This process effectively rejuvenates the root system of the plant and prevents lethal "girdling" roots from forming. After the root ball is trimmed, the plant is returned to its original container surrounded by fresh soil. The large hinokis are repotted every four to five years, while the smaller plants are repotted every two to three years. SOIL MIXES: Plant roots are so intimately involved with soil particles that it is best to think of the soil as part of the plant itself. As such, a great deal of time and care needs to go into its preparation. In general, the potting mix should provide the plant with a balance of water retention and air circulation. Our repotting mixes consist of coarse sand (particle size 1-3 mm), peat moss or leaf mold, and screened loam in various proportions depending upon the plant being grown. In general, we use a mix that is one-half sand, one-quarter loam, and one-quarter peat for the conifers; and one-third sand, one-third peat, and one-third loam for deciduous trees. In either case, small amounts of superphosphate and organic nitrogen fertilizer are added to the soil mix.

How to care for your bonsai
Bonsai, a delight in miniature gadening. How to instructions on choosing plants and methods employed in growing Bonsai. Great tips for beginners.
Bonsai, gardening on a miniature scale, is a wonderful alternative if you have limited space. Bonsai, literally meaning Bon (tray) Sai (plant) was begun around the third century B.C. by the Chinese. Later adopted and developed into an art form by the Japanese. Pronounced Bahn Sy' it is a way to grow many different kinds of plants indoors or out all in containers. America discovered this gardening delight approximately 50 years ago. Bonsai plants may be cultivated using many different species. Evergreens such as ficus, natal plum, or flowering types as azaleas, apricot, plum, and pomegranate, or outdoor species of conifers, spruce or pine trees are all suitable for growing in containers, pruning, and the art of wiring the plant to change its appearance. The basics of how to grow your own Bonsai are relatively simple. Choosing the plant is the most important. Consider if it is going to be outdoors or indoors, the amount of light available and the temperature or humidity of the locale its place in. For outdoors you would want to use the more hardy plant materials as the conifers. Pine and spruce are the most common. Indoors you can choose the more tropical plants, as the ficus and natal plum. For the flowering species or deciduous plants a mixture of both indoor and outdoors at the time of seasons is a good choice, as you can alternate by taking them inside during the winter months and when all danger of frost is removed, they can go outdoors for sunlight and fresh air.

Review : A beautifully photographed and comprehensively-written book that creates in the reader "a longing for total silence". It includes photographs of tranquil bridges, intricate Japanese maple leaves, and shimmering ponds. Gustafson's notion of a Japanese garden is a hybrid of styles, some ancient, some modern and he provides a multitude of ideas and suggestions for creating such a garden. There are many chapters in this book which work to look at variety of things: boundaries (i.e. fences, walls, gates), the use of water features and how to incorporate rocks. This is a practical book that also looks at the philosophical aspects of Japanese gardens. If the reader is ambitious enough, this book would most certainly put them on the right track to creating their very own 'peaceful space'. "Japanese Garden Design"
