"The book "Bonsai School" was in my mailbox two days ago. The best thing I can say about the book is that after just a couple of pages I started saying to myself, " I didn't know that". After 23 years of bonsai it was great to see a book that was teaching me new things page after page. The book is a beautiful book. It is the first book that I believe that I could use "as is" as a text book to teach a very complete course on bonsai. I'm not certain how you will produce a "College of Bonsai" but I want a copy as soon as it's off the press. It is going to be a very successful book with a long shelf life at the stores." Joe Day

Glory of Bonsai The word bonsai literally translates to "planted in a pot or tray." Though the word is Japanese, the art itself has far deeper roots, so to speak. In many countries where space is at a premium, trees and forests in their natural settings are sometimes rare. In order to experience the feeling of nature and the beauty of trees found in the wild, the art of bonsai was born. The art of bonsai is the art of imitating the spirit of nature. It has as one of its basic elements the idea of balance, of bringing all the elements of tree growing, of line and form, into an elegant and pleasing effect. The word also carries connotations of patience, since there is no such thing as instant bonsai. Creating the appearance of aging is another of the basic tenets of any good bonsai gardening. Many such bonsai plants take many years to train and grow to achieve the effect intended by the practitioner. Bonsai has become to most of us a Japanese art of dwarfing trees,

Art in Miniature The art of creating miniature indoor trees began over two thousand years ago in China. Now known as bonsai, this term derived from the Chinese word Delivery Watering Location Think carefully before deciding where to stand your bonsai. It will need lots of light but should be kept out of the midday sun. The temperature should be warm, so avoid windowsills, where conditions can fluctuate. If your chosen location has only once source of light, remember to regularly turn your tree to ensure balanced growth. Rethink the location if your tree starts to lose its leaves. Fertilizer Pruning Repotting Make sure you repot your bonsai every two or three years, preferably in the spring. Trim away a small amount of the root, and replace the old soil.

"Bonsai? Yes! Japanese dwarf trees...."
This could be the most common answer that someone would give about bonsai, although, it has some misconceptions. Let's see.
First, undeniably, the Japanese have raised the art of bonsai to a level of high technique and refinement. However, it began one thousand years ago in China; there are some ancient paintings that show small trees, planted in pots and named "pun-sai." These trees were used in religious worships and in some special cases were even venerated as deities.
Some research goes even further and associates bonsai with the very early origins of civilization. They say that nomads used to carry with them, planted in trays and pots, edible small plants and medicinal shrubs vital to their survival. In that way, the practice could have been introduced in the north of India by wandering caravans and then afterwards to China, where it flourished. Chinese Buddhist monks brought the art of bonsai cultivation into Japan during the Kamakura Age (1185-1333). Adopted by Japanese people as an exquisite expression of art, bonsai cultivation became more common over the centuries, developed according to specific principles, and spread. Nowadays, it is an artistic manifestation of beauty and correctness.

Do you wonder why some businesses are financially prosperous while others of equal merit fail? It's a well known fact that environment affects our health. But did you know that relationships, even financial success could greatly depend on the arrangement of your furniture? Feng Shui (pronounced Fung Shway ) is a 5000-year-old Chinese art form designed to enhance the harmony between people and their environments. Originally used by Chinese emperors to maintain power and increase wealth, Feng Shui blends philosophy, astrology, and design. Indoor gardening for the soul
By Kerry Hinze, owner of Botanical Boutique Moving meditation: bonsai and ikebana When we think of meditation, we think of a person sitting with eyes closed and legs crossed, lost in deep concentration. However, movement and activity can also be a form of meditation, called moving meditation. The creation and care of an indoor garden can be a practice in moving meditation. Bonsai as moving mediation Bonsai's long history dates back to Tibetan monasteries of about 300 B.C. Early Buddhists monks lived in lofty temples, secure and inaccessible. Long winters and drab living spaces prompted them to bring limbs, branches and lichen into their living quarters. The term 'bonsai' means the "art of raising living trees in trays" or "tray trees." Bonsai has evolved over time into an ornamental and meditative art form. When Buddhism came to Japan, the country was influenced in many ways, including the introduction of bonsai. Japan developed and evolved the art of bonsai, which is today a true branch of horticulture. But before we get to this point, there are a few basics you have to know.
