Bonds In Association With AMAZON The Bond Book: Everything Investors Need to Know About Treasuries, Municipals, GNMAs, Corporates, Zeros, Bond Funds, Money Market Funds, and More Editorial Reviews
From AMAZON.COM First published in 1992, this popular guide has been a perennial best-seller. The second edition is the most comprehensive resource currently available to individual investors. It has been completely updated and expanded with the latest information on such topics has junk bonds, inflation-linked securities, I saving bonds, CMOs, emerging market and other foreign bonds, and how to use the Internet to research and buy bonds. Like the first edition, The Bond Book assumes little or no knowledge of the bond market. But it explains all of the critical information required to buy any fixed income security.
The Bond Book is divided into four sections. The introduction explains fundamental aspects of the bond market, such as credit ratings, interest rate risk, and how to interpret tables of returns and yield curves. The second section is devoted to individuals bonds, with separate chapters on Treasuries, municipal bonds, corporate bonds, mortgage-backed securities, and foreign bonds. A third section discusses the major types of bond funds, fully explaining each type of fund, along with its risks and returns for the past 20 years. A fourth section discusses the management of bond portfolios. Throughout the book, information is provided on how to cut costs when buying bonds, for example, how to buy Treasury bonds through Treasury Direct without paying commissions; and how to purchase no-load funds. Risk factors are also fully discussed.

Bond investing online. Stephen S. Johnson, Forbes.com 02.24.98, 12:00 AM ET
On the Internet, stocks are king. There is an abundance of information on the web about U.S. equities from latest news to historical charts and even to current stock quots. Sites such as Yahoo!, Excite or Stocksmart are just a few places that provide extensive market data for no charge at all.
There is scant bond information available. What about bond investors? After all, while investors have poured some $10.8 trillion into the U.S. equity markets, there has been substantially more money invested in bonds. Last year a total of $12.1 trillion was invested in bondsTreasurys, corporates, municipals, federal agency bonds. Shouldn't bond investors get at least as much access to bond information as those equity investors?
Apparently not.
We took a good look at the financial offerings on the web and our findings were mixed. There is scant bond information available and what is available is largely geared to institutional investors. We found just eight sites with any form of current or near-live U.S. bond data. But unlike the free information available to stock investors, you have to pay a subscription rate ranging from $39.95 to $295 a month.
Online content
If you are only interested in learning about fixed income investing, there is plenty of good content. Here are a few sites to visit. The Bond Market Association (formerly the Public Securities Association)basically a lobbying group for the bond industryrepresents securities firms and banks that underwrite, trade and sell debt securities. A key advantage of the site is the links it offers to dozens of institutional sites providing data and content on the fixed markets.

Here are the main ways: Directly from the Feds. U.S. Treasuries are sold by the federal government at regularly scheduled auctions. You can buy them through a bank or broker for a fee, but why pay for something you can get for nothing? The easiest and cheapest way to participate in this market is to buy them directly from the Treasury. You can check out the so-called Treasury Direct program on the Web or by calling 202-874-4000. You also can sell bonds you already own before maturity through the Treasury's newer Sell Direct program. Through a broker. With the exception of Treasuries, buying individual bonds isn't for the faint of heart. Most new bonds are issued through an investment bank, or "underwriter," rather than directly to the public. The issuer swallows the sales commission, so you get the same price big investors pay. That's why, when buying individual bonds, you should buy new issues directly from the underwriter whenever possible since you're getting them at wholesale. Older bonds are another matter. They are traded through brokers on the "secondary market," usually over the counter rather than on an exchange, such as the New York Stock Exchange. Here, transaction costs can be much higher than with stocks because spreads the difference between what a dealer paid for a bond and what he'll sell it for tend to be wider.

Bonds are fancy IOUs Companies and governments issue bonds to fund their day-to-day operations or to finance specific projects. When you buy a bond, you are loaning your money for a certain period of time to the issuer, be it General Electric or Uncle Sam. In return, bond holders get back the loan amount plus interest payments. 2. Stocks do not always outperform bonds. It is only in the post-World War II era that stocks so widely outpaced bonds in the total-return derby. Stock and bond returns were about even from about 1870 to 1940. And, of course, bonds were well in front in 2000, 2001 and 2002 before stocks once again took charge in 2003 and 2004. 3. You can lose money in bonds. Bonds are not turbo-charged CDs. Though their life span and interest payments are fixed thus the term "fixed-income" investments their returns are not.

The President has made fixing Social Security his number-one domestic objective, but the fight won't be easy in part because of fierce opposition by the AARP, the seniors' lobby, with 35 million members. The AARP is using an old strategy: trying to scare the wits out of old people. The organization's executives want its members to think that Social Security will be destroyed by offering young people the option of personal accounts. The President's plan will likely allow workers to put up to four percentage points of what they now pay in taxes into a small number of broadly diversified portfolios of stocks and bonds. This is hardly radical. Half of American families already own mutual funds, and most AARP members are retirees who don't pay into Social Security anyway, so they won't be exercising the option. But those facts don't stop the AARP from painting a frightening picture that equates investing with casino gambling.

An Introduction to Fixed Income Investing Fixed income instruments are an important component of any balanced portfolio. To most they represent a conservative investment vehicle. However, investors purchase bonds for a variety of reasons, including regular income and the potential for capital gains. When you buy a bond, Treasury bill, or any other fixed income investment, you are essentially lending money to the issuer of the instrument. Like all lenders, you must be concerned with: the prospects for repayment (credit rating of issuer) the rate of return the term of the loan high current income predictability of future income adaptability to a changing interest rate environment liquidity safety An Introduction to Bonds A bond represents a promise of a government or corporation to pay a stated amount of interest annually to the bond holder. The interest paid is calculated as a percentage of the face value of the bond (also known as the par value or the principal amount), and usually is paid in two semi-annual installments. Upon maturity, the principal amount of the bond is repaid.

If you were to invest in a 30-year Treasury Bond today, you would enjoy a yield of 6.99 percent. But for investors who don't want to "lock in" their money for the long term, consider the following:
    • A two-year Treasury Note at 6.15 percent recently provided 88 percent of the yield available on a 30 year Treasury Bond. A five-year Treasury Note at 6.41 percent recently provided 92 percent of the yield available on a 30- year Treasury Bond. A ten-year Treasury Note at 6.65 percent recently provided 95 percent of the yield available on a 30 year Treasury Bond.

Here's how it works. If you were to buy, say, equal amounts of Treasuries due to mature in one year, three years, five years, seven years, and nine years, that portfolio would have an average maturity of five years (1+3+5+7+9 divided by five equals five). The next year, when the first batch comes due, you would reset the ladder by putting the money into new 10-year notes. Your portfolio would then have an average maturity of six years.
Two years after that, when the 3-year notes matured, you would buy more 10-years, and continue to do so whenever a note matures. That would always keep the average maturity in the five- to six-year range.
A bond portfolio can be built with any kind of bond, but Treasuries are commonly used since they have relatively little risk and are widely available.

    Investing in Tax-Free Municipal Bonds
Adapted From: Personal Finance For Dummies, 4th Edition Towns, cities, and regional and local agencies issue municipal bonds. Municipal bonds usually have lower interest rates than comparably rated corporate bonds and Treasury securities. The minimum amount required for investment in municipal bonds is $5,000, and municipal bonds are sometimes issued at a discount. This discount compensates investors for the additional risk that these bonds may have due to the financial difficulties of some local governments. The most important feature of municipal bonds is their tax-exempt feature. In subsequent judgments based on the 1819 McCullough v Maryland ruling, the Federal, state, and local governments don't possess the power to tax each other. Consequently, municipal bonds can't be subject to Federal tax. Additionally, income from state and local municipal bonds can't be taxed if purchased within the geographic area. For example, Virginia residents don't pay state taxes on Virginia bonds. However, residents of California are subject to state income taxes on their Virginia bonds. The tax-exempt feature makes municipal bonds very attractive to investors in high tax brackets. You treat capital gains on such bonds as normal income.
