Bonds: An Important Part of Asset Allocation
Within the context of your comprehensive financial plan, bonds serve as the anchor of your portfolio. Some might say bonds are boring; then again, we'd be willing to bet that the stereotypical "millionaire next door" owns a slug of bonds.
You can try to get rich quick, or you can accumulate wealth slowly, but also more steadily (Which are you: the tortoise or the hare?). Bonds, as a percentage of your total portfolio, will vary according to stage of life, change in life goals, risk tolerance and family situation.
A Ziegler Professional Investment Consultant can help you determine the appropriate mix of assets, and periodically "re-balance" your portfolio

Canada Savings Bonds are a safe and secure way to reach your savings and investment goals, and are also ideal for gift giving. They are issued by the Government of Canada and can be purchased with an RRSP or RRIF option from the Bank of Canada. You can choose either the Canada Savings Bond (CSB), which is cashable at any time, or the Canada Premium Bond (CPB), which is cashable once a year. Both the CSB and the CPB offer a variety of features:
safe and secure - the CSB and the CPB are backed by the Government of Canada, making them perfect investment products for the secure part of any portfolio; rates - competitive with similar fixed income investments. The CSB carries a minimum guaranteed interest rate, which means that rates will be increased when market conditions warrant, but will never fall below the posted rate for the specified period. The CPB rates at the time of issue are higher than the CSB series on sale at the same time. The CPB rates for the specified period will not change after the issue date; convenient - on sale for six months, from early October through to April 1 each year. The CSB and the CPB may be purchased online, by phone or wherever you bank or invest. The annual interest payment on regular interest bonds can be deposited directly into your bank account;

Bonds as an Investment
Of the various forms of investment vehicles , bonds are a way to invest by loaning money to an entity such as a corporation or the government, whether federal, state or local. In return for your loan, you may receive interest at a fixed rate for a fixed period of time. The period of time can range anywhere from a few months to over 20 years. When the bond matures (the specified time period is over), you receive your original investment amount back. With some types of bonds, such as U.S. savings bonds or zero coupon bonds, you get all your interest when the bond matures because you buy the bond at a discounted price and receive the full face value when it matures. In general, when interest rates go up, bonds decrease in value. Conversely, when interest rates go down, bonds are more valuable because their interest rate is higher than the interest rate available for other investments. Therefore it is important to understand that the

Topics on This Page: When you buy US bonds, you're lending money to the federal government. Bonds were used during World War I and II as a way for the federal government to raise money for fighting the wars. Still popular today, US bonds can be purchased at banks.
Two kinds of US Bonds
  • EE Bonds . These are discount bonds. When you buy these bonds, you pay only half their face value, the value printed on the bond. So, for example, you pay $50 for a $100 bond. Each year that you keep the bond, its value increases as interest adds up. Even after the bond reaches the value stamped on it, the bond will continue to earn interest. Bonds earn interest for 30 years from the date they were issued. I Bonds . These bonds are sold at their face value ($50 for a $50 bond). They earn interest

Money market funds Bond funds (also called fixed income funds typically invest in government or corporate bonds, or a combination of both. Government bond funds can invest in bonds from the U.S. Government, state governments or local governments.Funds that invest in state or local government bonds may offer some income that is exempt from income taxes. Corporate bond funds invest in a variety of bonds from companies across the country or around the world. Bond funds are subject to the performance of the bonds in their portfolio, and risk varies according to the fund's investment strategy. Generally, funds containing bonds with longer average maturity periods have higher yield potential and risk. Funds with a shorter average maturity are generally lower risk investments. Bonds, and therefore bond funds, are highly sensitive to interest rate fluctuations. As a rule, interest rates and bond prices move in opposite directionwhen rates fall, prices of existing bonds rise, and vice versa. As an example, say you own a $1,000 bond that pays 5% interest. You have loaned the issuer $1,000known as the principaland as your reward the issuer pays you $50 per year until the bond matures, when your principal is returned. If interest rates rise, new bonds may pay higher than the 5% you're earning. Because better rates exist, your bond would become less valuable in the marketplace and its price will fall. Conversely, if interest rates fall, your bond may increase in value. Because of its higher rate, other investors may be willing to pay more for the bond you own.

bond investing When you invest in a bond, you're giving a loan to the issuer. The issuer, such as a corporation or government, agrees to repay the loan with interest within an agreed amount of time. The yield on your bond investment, which is the amount you earn, is calculated by dividing the bond's annual income by its price. Until a bond matures, it can be bought or sold on the open market. If it changes hands before maturity, the price can fluctuate depending on interest rates at the time. When interest rates fall, bond prices rise and vice versa. The types of bonds offered for investments vary according to the issuer:
  • The federal government issues Treasury bonds to finance the national debt and government programs. State and city governments issue municipal bonds to help pay for roads, schools, sewers and other public works projects. Public and private corporations issue bonds to help their businesses grow eg. premium bonds.

Stocks and Bonds
The Huntington Investment Company offers equity (stock) trading services as well as bond investing.
Stocks When you own stock, you own part of the company you've invested in. As a stockholder you share in the company's profits, growth, and future, which may mean losses or gains. And while stocks can be volatile over short time periods, and past performance does not guarantee future results, historically stocks have favored an upward trend.
Bonds Unlike stockholders who own equity in a company, bondholders are creditors. The issuer is obligated to repay the principal and interest within a stated period of time. Corporations, states, municipalities and the federal government may issue bonds. Their prices rise or fall in relation to interest rates. There are several different types of bonds:
  • Corporate Bonds : Corporate bonds are the main source of corporate borrowing. These bonds are fully taxable but may offer a higher yield than government bonds.
