Bonds can be a wise investment for your portfolio, but as with any investment, you need to know what you’re getting yourself into. For that very reason, here’s a simple primer on bonds:
Q: Why would I want to invest in bonds?
A: In a nutshell, security. Bonds can give you a level of security, because typically, there is a steady stream of payments and repayment of principal. You can predict a level of dependable income with bonds that can provide more stability to your portfolio.
Q: Where does this security for bonds come from?
A: Unless an issuer defaults, your bond will be redeemed at par if you hold it until its maturity date. Its value does not depend on current interest rates. It’s a hedge against disaster.
Q: How much money do I need to invest in bonds?
A: As little as $1000 is all you need to invest in bonds. Generally, though, because of the security, most bonds are sold in $5000 increments.

When you buy a bond, the money you pay is used as a loan by the issuer. Common bond issuers are:
  • The federal government (government bonds) Municipalities (municipal bonds, called munis) Private companies (corporate bonds).
At the end of a given period of time - referred to as the bond's "maturity" - the issuer pays back the amount it borrowed (the "face value" or "par value" of the bond). The bond's coupon rate
No one would buy a bond if the only incentive were getting back the money after a period of time. The "income" in fixed-income investing is the interest you receive at a fixed rate, called the "coupon rate" or just the "coupon." Generally, the longer the maturity, the higher the coupon, and vice versa:
  • Short-maturity bonds, called "short-term" bonds, can be expected to have lower coupons. (Maturity less than 5 years) Medium-maturity bonds, called "intermediate-term" bonds, can be expected to offer slightly higher interest rates. (Maturity 5 to 10 years)

That's not the case at all. All of the materials presented are informative and have educational merit. And, little to no fund family p.r. fluff in them. I know this for a fact as I've read through each entry and personally decided upon its Bull's-Eye rating. Here's what the ratings mean:
  • O to 1 bull's-eye means the piece is solid and informative.
  • 2 bull's-eyes means the piece is a cut above the 1 bull's-eye entries.
  • 3 bull's-eyes means content is strong, very educational and definitely worth a read.

    A Foundation of Quality
Tax-exempt income... predictability... a solid financial foundation. Combined, these characteristics exemplify municipal bonds. Since the establishment of the federal income tax in 1913, all types of investors have purchased municipal bonds for their tax savings and conservative investment quality. Municipal Bonds–What are they?
Municipal bonds are tax-exempt, fixed income securities that allow individuals the opportunity to participate in the development or maintenance of a variety of shared public interests, such as schools, highways, hospitals, bridges or other public facilities. When you purchase a municipal bond, you are lending money to an issuer (a state or local government entity) for a specified period of time and for use on a specific public project. The issuer promises to repay your principal in full at the bond’s maturity, in addition to paying you interest income—which is tax-exempt. The Municipal Edge
The widespread appeal of municipal bonds is demonstrated by the fact that the majority of them are held by individual investors. The following are several reasons why municipals can be an attractive and solid investment.

    Corporations and governments are just like you and me every now and then, they need to borrow a little cash. By buying a bond, you spot them the money. And here's the good part: Unlike when you loan friends money, corporations and governments typically pay you back on time, with interest For investors, the big appeal in buying bonds is predictability. They pay interest at a fixed rate for a fixed term. While bonds' performance often lags behind stocks, bonds are considered a safer investment because those fixed payments limit the downside. Bond investing may seem complicated, but the basic idea isn't: You lend your money, you get fixed interest payments over the term of the loan, then you get your money back at the end. There are a great many types of bonds available to investors (the lenders in the equation): Treasury bonds , U.S. government debt securities;

Editor's Note: This piece is part of our weeklong primer on bonds. Please see our introductory piece Would you accept a somewhat lower return if it meant considerably less risk? If so, you're in the market for bonds. Lowering risk is basically what bonds are all about. Bonds aren't foolproof. It's possible to lose money in bonds. In 1994, the worst year for bonds in a generation, lots of investors learned that lesson. Interest rates rose so much and so quickly that the paper price losses on many bonds were greater than the income they generated. But 1994 was probably close to as bad as it gets. Over the long term, bonds have produced healthy returns much higher than money market funds have, and respectable even compared with equities. From 1987 to 1997, measuring from year-end to year-end, the Merrill Lynch Treasury Master Index returned an average of 8.9% a year, and Merrill's

A bond is a debt, offering more ready cash for a company in shortage situation, or a government in need of extra project money, or other groups needing immediate funds for an extended length of time, with interest. Corporate bonds are backed, usually by assigned business assets, land, buildings, etc. Municipal bonds, however, come in two forms, general obligation and revenue. Each offers different security, from governmental authority in taxation, and income from bond projects, respectively. There are other variations, such as bearer bonds, until 1983, and registered bonds, where the issuer keeps account of who holds the bond.
