Towards an integrated understanding

basin subsidence, and petroleum systems of the
northern offshore margin of Venezuela Principal Investigator:
Paul Mann
Postdoctoral fellow: Alejandro Escalona
Funding Agency: The Petroleum Research Fund, American Chemical Society and the Jackson school of Geosciences at The University of Texas at Austin Abstract
The region of Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago has one of the largest hydrocarbon reserves in the western hemisphere with 38 known giant fields whose oil reserves are currently estimated at 77 BBO (Fig.1 ). All but one of these giants occur in the onland foreland basins and Orinoco delta area of Venezuela, south of the presently active Caribbean-South America plate boundary. The northern offshore area of Venezuela on the present-day Caribbean plate is far less mapped and explored for hydrocarbons, although giant gas fields are being developed offshore and oil and gas shows and rich source rocks have been reported in offshore exploration and DSDP wells. HISTORY LESSON VENEZUELA
Venezuela is a country of striking natural beauty and dramatic contrasts: the snowcapped peaks of the Andes in the west, and steamy Amazonian jungles in the south; the hauntingly beautiful Gran Sabana plateau, with its strange flat-topped mountains, in the east, and 3000km (1860mi) of white-sand beaches fringed with coconut palms line the Caribbean coast. South America's largest lake, Lake Maracaibo, and third-longest river, the Orinoco, are also here, and the country boasts the world's highest waterfall, Angel Falls. It is also home to a wide variety of exotic plants and animals, including the jaguar, ocelot, tapir, armadillo, anteater, and the longest snake in the world, the anaconda.
Map of Venezuela
History
At the time of the Spanish Conquest of Venezuela, the region was inhabited by some 500,000 indigenous peoples belonging to three principle ethnolinguistic groups - the Cariban, Arawak and Chibcha. Columbus was the first European to set foot on the soil of what is now Venezuela, and the country was given its name (meaning 'Little Venice') a year later by the explorer Alonso de Ojeda. The first Spanish settlement on the mainland was established at Cumaná in 1521. The indigenous tribes put up a strong struggle against the colonial depredations of both the Spanish and the Germans, who left a swathe of death and destruction behind them as they pushed onwards in search of the chimerical El Dorado. In the end, though, their resistance was subdued when many tribal communities fell victim to European diseases such as smallpox, which wiped out two-thirds of the population in the Caracas valley alone.

Bill and Evelyn grew up in the farming community of Albert Lea, Minnesota. Albert Lea has an abundance of water within the city limits and is somewhat of an oasis in the endless farm land of southern Minnesota. Growing up, Bill immediately took to the water- and in which, he excelled. After high school, Bill joined the Army and was stationed in Panama where he continued his aquatic activities and went on to become the all-armed forces spring diving champion. Bill enrolled in Mankato State College, in Mankato Minnesota, after his two year tour of duty. As a lifeguard during his senior year, Bill experienced his first taste of breathing underwater, and was forever hooked. After graduation, Bill and Evelyn received teaching jobs in the resort city of Brainerd- Considered by two hay seed college grads from Albert Lea, to be the way- way up in the wild woods of Northern Minnesota.
