    Current use and attitudes
Many Latin American and Caribbean immigrants choose to learn Papiamentu because it's more practical in daily life on the islands, and for Spanish speakers, it's much easier to learn than Dutch. That's because Papiamentu has many Spanish and Portuguese words in it. (Those who focus their efforts on Dutch point out that Papiamentu is only useful on three small islands. Many of these people do not consider it a 'real' language.) Papiamentu is widely used in Antillean society. It is the language most often heard on the street and in any informal context. There are daily and weekly newspapers in Papiamentu, and each island has a TV station which broadcasts news, talk shows, and other programs in Papiamentu. (Cable and satellite TV brings Venezuelan, American, and European stations to the islands. English stations are most prevalent.) There are many radio stations where all of the talking and some of the music are in Papiamentu. (Other music is in English and Spanish. It's rare to hear Dutch music on the radio.) History The first known inhabitants of the island were the Caiquetios Indians, members of the Arawak group that came from Venezuela about 1000 AD. Remains of their settlements have been found near the capital and at Lac Bay, and their petroglyphs are visible in caves on the northern side of the island. Within 20 years of their first contact with Europeans in 1499, most of the Caiquetios had succumbed to disease or had been pressed into slavery on Hispaniola. Immigrants to the island tended to be convicts from South America, or cattle and goats for the governor's ranch. Most people lived in small settlements at Rincon, in the north, or Antriol, just north of the present-day capital of Kralendijk. In retaliation for losing St Martin to the Spanish, the Dutch took Bonaire in 1633. The island became a granary for the Dutch West India Company until 1791, when the Dutch government took over the island. Other than the African slaves brought in by the company to harvest corn, salt and lumber, most immigrants to the island for the next 200 years were white overseers. The abolition of slavery in 1864 sent the economy into a slump. The export market dribbled along with castor oil, aloe, charcoal and salted goat meat, but island economists didn't start smiling until the discovery of oil in Venezuela early in the 20th century. Bonaire benefited from the oil refineries on neighboring Aruba and Cura§ao and improved the harbor at Kralendijk and built an airport. The island's male population won the right to vote in 1936 and began agitating for greater independence from the Dutch Crown. Queen Juliana made Bonaire a Dutch protectorate in 1954, keeping the country on a long leash. Searching for new economic vigor (and something sexier than salt farming), the island found it in tourism. Thousands of American and Dutch soldiers stationed on the island during WWII fell under its charm, and internment camps for German prisoners were handily converted to hotels.

Photo courtesy of Jake Richter The Bonairean culture is reflected in the faces of her people. Its origins are as varied as are the ethnic roots of the 11,000 plus residents. The real Bonairean culture is based on traditions that go back many generations and are chronicled in the songs and dances that are performed during holidays and festivals. It is also based on strong family ties and a general respect for nature and an understanding of an environment that originally was foreign to those first settlers and slaves that were forced to work the inhospitable, arid land. Those early days of slavery conditioned the people to be strong in the face of adversity. And, it was during this time that the spirit of the people began to develop and they made up songs, invented dances, and began to sing in the old African Tradition. These songs and dances evolved into festivals and have survived to become an important part of life and culture on Bonaire.

A ir Jamaica began operations in 1966 as the first Jamaican based international airline. It was governed by a tripartite agreement between the Government of Jamaica, BWIA, and BOAC (now British Airways). However, on April 1, 1969, Air Jamaica Limited was born with the Government of Jamaica holding majority shares in the airline. Air Canada held a minority interest and provided equipment, technology, training, pilots, and some top management. Then in 1984, the Jamaican Government acquired the airline through a “buy back” agreement with Air Canada. Ten years later, in 1994, the Government of Jamaica embarked on a privatization exercise. The Gordon “Butch” Stewart led Air Jamaica Acquisition Group (AJAG) acquired majority ownership of the national airline with the government retaining a minority stake.
I n 2004, after severe turbulence in the airline industry and massive financial losses, the Government of Jamaica reclaimed full control of the airline.

*On this date of Cinco de Mayo we look briefly at the history of Africans in Latin (Central and South) America and the Caribbean.
In world history these two western regions were the first areas of the Americas to be populated by African immigrants. African immigration to the Americas may have begun before European exploration of the area. African slave trading began before Columbus 1492, and the earliest Spanish and Portuguese explorers were likewise accompanied by Black Africans who had been born and reared in Iberia. In the following four centuries millions of immigrants from Africa were brought to the New World in servitude.
Today, their descendants form significant ethnic minorities in several Latin American countries, and they are the dominant element in many of the Caribbean nations. Over the centuries, Black people have added their original contributions to the cultural mix of their respective societies and thus exerted a deep influence on all facets of life in Latin America. In culture today a strong African influence saturates music, dance, the arts, literature, speech forms, and religious practices in Latin America and the Caribbean. Africans, whether as slaves or free immigrants, brought a variety of African cultural influences to the New World. They came from so many places in Africa and were too scattered throughout the Americas to reestablish all the conditions of their homelands. Yet wherever possible, they prepared and accepted reality with their beliefs.
