Bolivia South America
CULTURE Musical traditions within Bolivia are distinctly regional: strains of Andean music from the desolate Altiplano are suitably haunting and mournful, while those of warmer Tarija, with its compliment of bizarre musical instruments, take on more ebullient tones. Dances such as the cueca, auqui-auqui and tinku hold a reverent place in popular culture. Other forms of folk expression include spinning and weaving, which display regional differences but have changed little over the last 3000 years. Bolivia's food is dominated by meat dishes, accompanied by rice, potatoes and shredded lettuce. Sometimes llajhua (a hot sauce made from tomatoes and pepper pods) will be used to add spice and flavor to a dish. Bolivian beer, wine and chicha (industrial-strength maize liquor) are all good but be warned: if invited to drink with locals, be prepared as the alcohol is strong and Bolivian drinking habits lusty.

It's the kind of place where you start taking the strangest things for granted. Like sitting next to an alligator on a bus, sharing a taxi with a pile of llama fetuses , or waiting behind a group of piglets at the check-in desk. In Bolivia, it seems, pigs really do fly. Laikakota Cultural Complex
The Quipus Cultural Foundation is building a permanent base in La Paz, Bolivia to introduce new ways of learning and doing regarding Bolivian history, art, crafts, science, technology and culture. The Center is located in the heart of this city of one million inhabitants, on 30,000 square meters of land donated by the municipality. The property is on the Laikakota Hill, the most important segment of City's Central Park area. Construction began in July 1995, and the first phase of construction will be completed by the end of 1996.
The Complex has three inter-related components: the Children's Museum , the Museum of Bolivian Arts and Cultures and the Quipus Craft Development Program . Its cost, including land, planning and construction, is over $20 million, of which 50% has already been obtained. The City's land donation is valued at $6 million and a contribution from the Dutch government covers $2,045,000 of construction and core planning costs. The World Bank is contributing $400,000 for the Craft Development Program. The Bolivian government has made the project a priority and approved a unique debt swap mechanism that has generated $600,000 for the Foundation and will help to cover recurrent costs in the future and ensure the sustainability of the Complex. Top experts from Bolivia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Canada and the U.S. are providing technical assistance in exhibit design, conceptualization and execution.
A full-time staff, including ethnographers, designers, educators and administrative personnel is now working of the planning for the three components.

    Bolivia - Culture
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Bolivian culture is full of color. Its mixed population brings together a diverse collection of lifestyles. The original inhabitants of the area, the native Incans and the Tiahuanacan have many traditions. The Spanish who arrived in the 16th century brought a great amount of Spanish and European culture with them. And the mixed population of the Spanish and natives developed their own culture.
There are many parts to Bolivian culture. Dance, music and even parties in Bolivia have a flavor you won't find anywhere else. Bolivian writers have created wonderful books and poems. Among these writers is a woman who turned personal tragedy into powerful writing.
Imagine you are blind. How would this change your life? Are there things you could no longer do? Are there things you could do, or do better, without your eyesight? How would you feel about losing your sight? Would you be angry? Scared? Maria Josefa Mujia of Bolivia turned her blindness into a passion for writing.

Oruro - Culture The city of Oruro is a mixture of history, customs, culture, and folklore. The Carnival of Oruro has been and is one of the most important folkloric shows of the Andean region. Year round the city has a number of attractions, including the Virgin del Savon Sanctuary and the Museum of Archaeology, which has an interesting collection of Carnival masks. The artisans who craft Carnival masks and embroidery can be found along the Calle La Paz. Oruro is the regional administrative and commercial capital, and mining plays, or rather used to play an important role. The mineral riches and the ores in the mountains, were the economical backbone of the city. The carnival becomes more and more fabulous every year, but the miners, who once controlled the event, have disappeared from the carnival groups, and their carnival is celebrated in the street on a totally different social level. Santa Cruz - Culture C Santa Cruz's transformation from a quiet lowland town to a rapidly growing urban center in less than 50 years has been complete and dramatic. The city continues to grow at extremely high rates. In 1950, just before the popular revolution and land reform, the population of the city of Santa Cruz was approximately 43,000 people. By 1976, the population had grown to about 256,000.1 That represents a growth of six times its original size in just 25 years. This rapid urbanization has not slowed yet. The city continues to increase at a rate near 8% each year as is has since 1976. The city's very dynamic population makes maintenance of up-to-date statistics difficult, but the most recent estimates place the population above 800,000. It has surpassed Cochabamba as the second largest city shop with their migrant maids. The smells and sounds of the market float over the government buildings on the Plaza Principal where sloths hang in the palm trees, oblivious to the city that has sprung up around their small square of jungle trapped in the center of ever-expanding urbanization. The sloths' slow, lazy pace is a reminder of the town's previous identity as a sleepy, Spanish colonial town in the middle of the jungle. It is only the last fifty years that have transformed that dusty frontier town into a dynamic boom town whose rapid growth has made it the second largest city in the nation. At this site you can learn more about the urbanization and urban geography of this dynamic city.

People of Bolivia The people of Bolivia are made up of roughly 55 percent of Native Americans and about 30 percent of mestizo who are a mixture of Native American and European race. The remaining 5 percent is made up of white people, mainly of Spanish descent. Most of the people live in urban areas, only around 37 percent live in rural areas. Flag of Bolivia The flag of Bolivia is made up of three equal horizontal bands - red at the top, yellow in the center and green at the bottom. The yellow band has the coat of arms in the center.

Economy of Bolivia Though Bolivia has had a long spell of poor economy, this Latin American country is marching along the progress path to become a market-oriented economy. Efforts in this direction included the signing of a free trade agreement with Mexico and becoming an associate member of the Southern Cone Common Market (Mercosur), as well as the privatization of the state airline, telephone company, railroad, electric power company, and oil company. However, in 1999, growth slowed as a result of the government budget policies, which limited needed appropriations for anti-poverty programs, and the fallout from the Asian financial crisis. In 2000, major civil disturbances held down overall growth to 2.5%. Bolivia's GDP failed to grow in 2001 due to the global slowdown and a lack in domestic activity.
