Physical Education Our physical education (P.E.) curriculum is broken down into three developmental levels. Each level includes activities appropriate for the majority of the students in that particular stage of physical development. Classes are sometimes divided into smaller groups, to provide individual students with an appropriate level of challenge. Body management and listening skills are stressed in the first developmental level (grades K-1), fundamental skills in the second (grades 2-5) and specialized skills in the third (grades 6-8). In addition, a continuous emphasis is placed on developing good overall physical health and appropriate fitness goals.
Kindergarten/First Grade

About Mission Contact Privacy ... PRESS Hall of Fame 2004 Inductees George Burton George Burton is a 34 year-old Special Olympics athlete who trains and competes in athletics, bowling, long distance running and alpine and cross-country skiing. And although he enjoys all of the sports in which he participates, running is where you'll find Burton's passion.
Burton lives in Cyclone, a rural hamlet in McKean County. He became interested in sports at a young age, and he began to run with his sister and brother who competed in high school track. He would watch their track meets, but he was never one to sit on the sidelines. As he continued to train, he was able to outrun his sister, brother, and his father, too.
When Burton discovered Special Olympics, his world changed forever. He seized the opportunities that Special Olympics gave him and methodically achieved one goal after another on his way to becoming an accomplished international runner.
When Burton qualified to have his name put into the hat for selection for the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Minneapolis in 1991, he was ecstatic. When his name failed to be drawn, he was not nearly as disappointed as his coaches and family were. He simply said, "When are the next World Games?" He continued his quest to compete internationally and after learning that the 1995 World Games would include a marathon, George began to train for that grueling race.

Camp MeadowWood
Fourth of July Sports Day at Carolina Meadows

Camp MeadowWood
Residents and staff of Carolina Meadows Retirement Community welcomed 22 excited, wide-eyed children aged 6-13 to their campus in July for the last two-week long session of Camp MeadowWoods 2002 Season. Camp MeadowWood, previously known as the OPC (Orange, Persons, Chatham Counties) Children's Therapeutic Summer Camp, now recognizes both Carolina Meadows and Carol Woods Retirement Communities for their sponsorship of this unique program that combines therapy and the fun of camp. The OPC Foundation for Mental Health sends 60 children to Camp MeadowWood through donated scholarships. These children, challenged by emotional and behavioral problems and/or developmental disabilities, might not otherwise have the chance to experience summer day camp most children take for granted. Camp MeadowWood is unique. Not only do mental health professionals staff it, but it is an intergenerational camp as well. During the week over 45 Carolina Meadows residents and staff planned and participated in sports, workshops, and special activities with the children. For grandparents and great grandparents it was a natural interaction and the children responded to the special attention and caring very quickly.
