Physical Education Department
PHILOSOPHY
The Physical Education Staff believe that a program that promotes physical, emotional and social well being enhances the quality of our students lives. Each student can achieve success regardless of size, maturity, coordination, body type or any other physical attributes. We as a department are concerned with helping our students understand the importance of Physical Education and to develop a commitment to activities and fitness that will help them create a healthy lifestyle for themselves. PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM Our Physical Education Department has implemented a "lifetime interpersonal skills curriculum" which is reinforced daily. Some of the interpersonal skills that we emphasize are: respect, encouragement, courtesy and accepting personal difference. These skills have a positive effect on our school environment. Each class stresses achievement in the development of personal fitness and in participation in team and individual sports. Instruction is given in fundamental skills, rules, safety, and strategy pertaining to a wide variety of sports. Students are encouraged to develop effective skills and to learn to play cooperatively in team situations. Emphasis is place on class cooperation with peers and instructors as well as with individual achievement. Practice with basic skills involved in each activity is stressed before students become involved in actual play. A daily program of warm-up calisthenics helps to develop agility, strength endurance, cardio-vascular endurance, flexibility of joints, balance, spatial awareness, and sequencing of body movements. Specific drills are practiced involving eye hand and eye foot coordination and visual perception.

Requirements:
Physical Education each term, grades nine through twelve, unless replaced by
team membership or an approved "out of school" or "athletic" contract.

Aims
Participation Choices Awards The aim of the Knox Senior School sports program is to develop every student to his potential. If that is to represent Australia, the School will seek to facilitate this ability. For example, Scott Elsworth is a Paralympian in Bocce; John Turner, Peter Bromley, Michael McNair and Ryan Perkins played rugby for the Australian Schoolboys; athletes Chris Shute, Gareth Watkins, John Morison and Richard Baird competed for NSW at the National Track and Field Championships while ex-students Jarrett Tunnicliffe and Michael Warren-Gash have represented NSW in the Under 17 State Volleyball team. Olympian Matthew Dunn leads the names of swimmers who have passed through our aquatic program with many others nationally ranked. The philosophy remains the same for middle and less strong students, to help them develop their skills and fitness while enjoying their sport. Development Officers in major sports are attempting to enable all to reach their potential in this important area of the curriculum. Active participation in team and individual sports is an integral part of Knox.

Judo With 18 official sports and three demonstration sports, it's easy to understand why the 2003 Special Olympics World Games is the biggest international event - sporting or cultural - yet staged in Ireland. From athletics, as with the summer Olympics the core of the games, to Bocce, the Italian version of bowling, there are events to challenge the full range of sporting skills and abilities. Of the 18 official sports, 14 are based around individual entries, while the remaining four are classified as team sports. The three demonstration sports are kayaking, pitch and putt, and judo, and are likely to be included as official sports in the next games. Athletes may participate in only one sport, and can only enter events appropriate to their level of training. Just like the summer Olympics, it is the taking part and not the winning and losing that is emphasised, although there are awards from first through to fourth, presented as gold, silver, bronze and the fourth place ribbon.
