The Utah Olympic Park, Soldier Hollow and Utah Olympic Oval have become popular locations for non-sporting events such as holiday parties, business meetings, birthday celebrations, corporate retreats, wedding receptions and banquets. Of course, events have an Olympic flair and winter sport activities are usually part of the agenda. Imagine a holiday party with a freestyle aerials or ski jumping show, your organization's employees skating on "The Fastest Ice On Earth," a group trying the sport of curling or soaring 25 feet in the air on the aerial bungee system, a company's leading sales team taking a bobsled ride, a team-building activity turning into a hockey slapshot contest, or a seasonal party on the tubing hill. Whether the gathering includes a handful of people or up to 5,000, these facilities have the rental space and services to host all types of special events. The Utah Olympic Park offers 10 different locations for parties and meetings, the Utah Olympic Oval has the World Record Lounge and full facility rental of the arena floor with five acres of space under the clear-span roof, and Soldier Hollow offers its beautiful lodge, kitchen, amphitheatre and Mongolian-style yurt. These facilities provide additional services, from preferred caterers and scoreboard signage to assistance with entertainment and decorations. An Olympic athlete may also be available to address your group. The Park can also arrange for tours of the Alf Engen Ski Museum and Olympic competition sites plus sports-related team-building activities. The Oval can provide skating demonstrations or instruction. Soldier Hollow can tailor-make an Olympic sport experience in biathlon, skiing, snowshoeing or tubing.

Winter warm-up
For Olympic bobsledders, the track to Turin goes through Chula Vista
By Don Norcross
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER May 30, 2005 Owing to the heat, most of the men have stripped off their T-shirts. The women deal with soaked cotton sticking to their backs.
FRED GREAVES / Union-Tribune Knocked out of 2002 Winter Olympics bobsled competition by a hamstring injury, former pro soccer player Shauna Rohbock has worked intensely to reach the '06 Olympics in Italy. There being only two bobsled tracks in the United States and warm temperatures eventually melting the ice at Lake Placid, N.Y., and Park City, Utah, bobsledders travel elsewhere for their offseason conditioning. With the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, barely eight months away, 15 members of the U.S. national team called the training center home the past six weeks, their camp breaking yesterday. The team kept its dryland sled in storage here, so the mission was simple. "Success in bobsledding is determined by how big, strong and fast you are," said national coach Stu McMillan, an Englishman now living in Canada. "The bulk of our training has been in the weight room to get a little bit bigger and a little bit stronger."

Teamwork, agility and breathtaking speeds best define the sport in which two or four-member bobsled teams push together to start down the straights - only to face some of the sharpest turns in sport at speeds of up to 135 km/h (84 mph).
Bobsleighing (or bobsledding as it is known in the U.S.) began in Switzerland as a gentleman's pursuit among the rich at 19th century ski resorts - the most famous of them at St. Moritz where the first bobsled club was formed in 1897 Development of official rules and experimentation with different tracks eventually led to the sport being recognized at the 1924 Olympics at Chamonix . Two-man teams were introduced at the Lake Placid games in 1932. Further development of the sport came with the imposition of weight limits on individual bobsled team members, and as fiberglass replaced the wooden sleds to increase speeds.

In 1897, the first bobsled club was founded in St. Moritz, Switzerland, spurring the growth of the sport in winter resorts throughout Europe. By 1914, bobsled races were taking place on a wide variety of natural ice courses. The first racing sleds were made of wood but were soon replaced by steel sleds that came to be known as bobsleds, so named because of the way crews bobbed back and forth to increase their speed on straight-aways. In 1923, the Federation Inernationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing (FIBT) was founded, and the following year a four-man race took place at the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix, France. A two-man event was added at the 1932 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, a format that has remained to the present. Bobsled racing began largely as an activity for the rich and adventurous who gathered at alpine resorts for weekends of competition and partying. There was no such thing as training. Competitors simply bought or rented a sled, started out as a rider and then took the wheel after a few runs. From the small core of alpine nations that originally embraced bobsledding, the sport has since expanded around the world to include countries such as Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and now, Israel.

Roger Potter brings his research
to life, forging a bobsled team out of desire and athletic ability
By Kalani Simpson Star-Bulletin Now convinced that Hawaiians had invented the sport of bobsledding in ancient times, former British Olympian Roger Potter got even more excited about the old holua. "Hey, the Hawaiians did it first, and they deserve respect for it," Potter said. "And it's something that I know the world will be interested in. Believe it or not, the mainland, and around, is very interested in this, ... especially since that great movie, 'Cool Runnings.' " It was the second epiphany. Roger Potter was on Kauai in the early '90s, right in the midst of his most feverish holua studies. "And out comes this 'Cool Runnings,' " he said. "Well, I thought, 'My goodness! There's something in this. Now people understand.' Before then, people would ask, 'What did you do?' I'd say I was a bobsledder, it would just go right over their heads." The movie stoked his fire into a raging flame. The holua was already his passion, but now? If the Hawaiians invented it, why couldn't they do it again? They had a history, where the Jamaicans had none. And Potter had already done something similar in his own life, building a team from scratch. It could be done. With the history of the holua, it should be done.

Bobsleigh
Do you want to learn about one of the BEST sports in the winter Olympics? … If your answer was yes then you have to read this. Imagine yourself bobsledding. You're at the starting line waiting for the buzzer to go off. The crowd is screaming in your ear. Bobsledding is a winter sport. Bobsleighing started in Switzerland in the late 1800s. It is one of the original Winter Olympic sports. A four-man event was included in the very first Winter Olympics in 1924. In 1932, a two-man event was added. Women will be competing in the bobsleigh event for the first time in Olympic history. The women's event will be a two-woman event. Bobsleighs have runners, a main hull, a frame, and a front and rear axle. The hull is made of fiberglass and the runners are made of steel. It can go 90 miles per hour. The events consist of two runs both done on the same day. The winner is the sled team with the lowest time. To be a bobsleigher you need a helmet, a bobsled, suit, and a number on the car. The start for sleds is very important. The three men in the back push the sled to get it started, after the sled is on its way they jump in. They only have 60 seconds to get started. Steering is also important. The driver of the sled steers by gently pulling on two pieces of string that are connected to a steering bolt that steers the sled. In the sled you will need a brake to stop you when get to the finish line. Each team is from a different country like Jamaica or Canada. There was a movie made about the Jamaican bobsled team a few years ago. They were very famous for a while. Prince Albert of Monaco will be competing in the 2002 Winter Olympics. But when he is in the sled, on the course he will be known as just Albert Grimaldi, driver of Monaco.

History
The bobsled was developed in Switzerland late in the 19th century when someone put runners on a toboggan to get greater speed down the famous Cresta Run at St. Moritz. The sport of racing bobsleds down the mountain quickly became popular among British and American visitors. The new sled got its name because early racers thought they could get even more speed by bobbing their bodies backward and forward. They soon realized it didn't work, but the name stuck. The first organized competition in the new sport was held on the Cresta Run on January 5, 1898, with five-passenger sleds. (Two of the passengers had to be women.) For better steering, they were equipped with four runners, positioned on axles much like the four wheels of a car. With the new design, speeds on the mountainside became dangerously fast, so an artificial bobsled run with a gentler slope was built at St. Moritz in 1902. Bobsledding spread rapidly to other Alpine countries. By 1914, when the first European championships took place at St. Moritz, there were more than a hundred bobsled runs in Europe.

Finally, Lincoln DeWitt, last season's World Cup champion, offers a colleague's assessment: Imagine driving down a highway at 85 mph., then opening the door and sticking your head out so it nearly skims the asphalt.
