Remove the ones where winning the olympic medal isn't the high point of your career
[vote for against Basically, the number of olympic sports is just getting silly. And, there are a whole load of them where there is a world cup (or equivalent tournament) which is more prestigious than winning the olympic title (football is a case in point). So, we just remove these sports and leave the ones (e.g. athletics, swimming) where the olympic title is what people really care about. vincebowdren , Feb 08 2002 motto interpretation? http://www.halfbake...dea/Anabolympics_3f fits the 'higher' criteria [ chud , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] Olympics would gain by returning to old ways http://www.usatoday...020225/3890387s.htm bristolz , Feb 25 2002, last modified Oct 05 2004] link I think you'll find that the other sports you mention (and presumably others inferred) have similar tournament level competition that carries the same level of meaning as your football example (guessing you're referring to World Cup non-US 'football' there) to the competitors. Those events just aren't as news-worthy (sports-worthy?) and have a lower profile than others, but they exist. They compete more than once every four years, you know.

We need new Olympic sports
By Jeremy Nelson, Varsity Staff Published: Thursday, February 14, 2002 Call them what you want, but the events of the winter Olympics are not all sports.
And so, if we have don't have to worry about their "purity," let's mess with them a little and make a far, far more interesting Olympics.
• Dual Bobsled. There's nothing quite as boring as seeing one team after another glide down the same course in a minute with performances that are imperceptable from one another save for a few split seconds. It's like watching a 100-metre sprint, except having each runner go individually. The simple solution: widen the track and allow (or should I say force) both teams to run down the same track at the same time. Think of the passes on the hairpin turns, the crashing of sleds together, the chaos and life-endangering injuries.
• Picnic Skiing. Now does anyone, I repeat, anyone at all watch cross-country skiing? Yes, it requires a great deal of athleticism, but the award for stamina must surely go not to the athletes but to any spectator who manages not to nod off during a 15 km trek.

When asked to get creative, some secondary school children in New Zealand did just thatand they were good sports about it, too! Children from 12 to 17years old created art on the theme "Sport and Olympism', in a national art and sport contest that was sponsored by the New Zealand Olympic Committee. The young artists were asked to use their imagination to draw, sculpt, print, or paint what the theme means to them. But what does the word "Olympism" mean? Olympism is what the Olympic Games are all about: tolerance, unity, respect, fair play, friendship and peace. So this means that the Olympic Movement is about meeting and making new friends, being nice people from other cultures and other countries, being the best that you can be, or the joy found in effort. Olympism can be shown not only at the Olympic Games, but also in Everyday life. Whether playing at school or at home, using these ideas and values will make the game a whole lot more fun!

At the 1964 Winter Olympics, they surprised the favoured European teams by winning the gold medal. The following year, Vic Emery and Peter Kirby led another foursome to a world championship. Trailblazers. Pioneers. Leaders. Breaking down barriers of race and gender, these 10 black female sports figures redefined the role of women in sports and laid the foundation for future generations. In honor of Black History Month, we celebrate their groundbreaking achievements and honor their contributions. Alice Coachman - Pioneer for black female athletes in all sports
Growing up in the segregated South during the 1920s and '30s, Alice Coachman was denied access to public facilities and forced to run barefoot in the streets. With the little opportunity she was given, Coachman took it and ran with it - literally. Overcoming racial segregation, Coachman went on to win 25 AAU track titles and numerous national championships at Tuskegee Institute, mostly in the long jump. However, her greatest achievement came in 1948 in London when she became the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal. By breaking the race barrier for women, Coachman opened the door for the future black female track stars, including some of the greats, like Wilma Rudolph, Florence Griffith Joyner and Jackie Joyner-Kersee. Dominique Dawes - Three-time Olympic medalist
As a young girl, Women's Sports Foundation President Dominique Dawes spent hours at the gym in order to achieve her dream of winning an Olympic medal. Her hard work paid off - big time. In 1988, she became the first African-American on the U.S. national gymnastics team, and in 1992, the first on the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team. In 1996, Dawes reached another milestone, winning an individual bronze medal in the floor exercises - the first black to earn an individual Olympic medal in women's gymnastics. She earned an Olympic gold medal the same year, as the U.S. women's gymnastics team won the team event in Atlanta. In a career of firsts, Dawes inspired a generation and set the stage for today's black gymnasts.

Two weekends ago, the Notre Dame track and field team had just stepped off the bus and was checking into their hotel in Windsor, Canada, where they had a meet the next day. As the athletes waited for their room assignments, somebody flipped on the television to watch the Opening Ceremonies for the Winter Olympics. The camera scanned the athletes, showing faces from countries spanning Nepal to Cameroon. All of the sudden, a face from Hungary appeared on the screen, a face quite familiar to the Irish athletes. It was Marton Gyulai, a 2001 Notre Dame graduate who competed in the sprints for the Irish the previous four seasons. "The Opening Ceremonies were going on and for some reason they kind of zoomed in on Marton," Notre Dame sprint coach John Millar said. "That was kind of the talk of the meet for a little while there." Gyulai, whose father and brother have both previously represented Hungary in the Olympics, is carrying on the family tradition as a member of his country's four-man bobsled team. Competition begins today at 5:30 p.m. EST at Utah's Olympic Park.

    Before 1924
Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page
    1924: Chamonix, France
The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."
