Sliding Sport of Skeleton
Approaching speeds of 80 mph, a skeleton slider descends down the icy bobsled track head first, face down, and hands back. Today, the sport of skeleton features men and women competing each year in local, national, and international competitions. Skeleton, the world's first sliding sport, returned to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games after a 54-year hiatus. Gaining momentum and popularity, the USA team accomplished an astonishing feat: winning gold in both the men's and women's divisions. Aerodynamic Equipment
Team USA Skeleton uses state-of-the-art fiberglass or steel sleds measuring 3' long and 16'' wide and weighing 70-115 lbs, depending on the slider's body weight. The protective racing helmets are equipped with a chin guard to protect the face, which is a mere two inches off the ice. The athletes wear aerodynamically designed tight rubber suits, allowing them to reach speeds of 70 to 80 mph, and sprinter's spikes to achieve the quick 50 meter start. Skeleton is a sport of extreme precision, concentration, and fearlessness.
Bobsled The Dynamics of Bobsled Bobsled is one of the fastest Winter Olympic Sports where speeds reach 80-90 mph, winners are decided by 1/100ths of a second, and athletes race down a track that averages 1300 meters long. Today, the sport features three racing divisions: Men's two-man, Men's four-man, and Women's two-man bobsled with the U.S. team competing in the International World Cup Racing circuit and the Winter Olympic Games. There are two types of athletes in bobsled: drivers and pushers. The drivers steer the sled and are the leaders of the team, while the pushers must execute a fast start.

Trivia

Venue: "Spiral," the first artificial ice track in Asia, is in the foothills of Mount Iizuna in the Asakawa district in the northern part of Nagano City. The 1,700-meter track has an elevation of 113 meters and encompasses 15 curves. 1994 Golds: Two-man, Switzerland (Gustav Weder and Donat Acklin in 3:30:81); four-man, Germany (Harald Czudaj, Karestan Brannasch, Olaf Hampel, Alexander Szelig; 3:27:78). Critical Moment: Finding the perfect racing line is the key to bobsledding: The driver struggles with a violently shaking bobsled to keep it on the path that gives the fastest time down the run. In turns, the driver must keep the sled high enough to maintain speed but low enough to avoid going extra distance. KRT How It Works: Nuts and Bolts: Speeds can reach 90 miles per hour, and runs take less than a minute. When braking, the crew feels five times the force of gravity. History: Although sleds have been around for centuries, bobsled racing didn't begin until 1877 in Davos, Switzerland, where a steering mechanism was attached to a toboggan.

Greek Going for Gold at Salt Lake Winter Games First some background info. Although bobsledding is a very prestigious sport in Europe, Greece never really developed into a bobsledding powerhouse like Switzerland, Germany, Italy and France did. There are three main competition circuits in the sport: The World Cup, the Europa Cup and the Americas Cup.
Bobsled is one of the oldest Winter Olympic sports, having debuted at the first Winter Games in France. Participants begin with a sled at the top of a downhill track that is both ice-covered and winding. The participants push the sled to gain momentum and then steer down the track toward the finish. It is a timed sport, with teams racing for the best time. The team with the fastest total time wins.
There are two competitions: a 4-man race and a 2-man race. Coming into the Olympics at Salt Lake City, the Greek team was a mere two seconds behind the competition. But in a sport where time is measured in thousandths of a second, the gap between them and the first place team might as well be two hours.
Bobsled has been contested at every Winter Olympics except one. In 1960, Squaw Valley (California) organizers refused to build a track and the sport was removed from the Olympic schedule. Bobsleds can reach speeds of 80-90 mph.

BOBSLED OR BOBSLEIGH

Bobsledding is a sport of skill, strength, and speed, in which 2 or 4-man teams race down a 1500-meter, artificially-banked ice track. Bobsledding first became popular in the Alps of Switzerland in the 19th century. Bobsleds were raced on icy grounds and passes. The first competition was held in 1898 with five-passenger sleds. The sport spread rapidly to other countries, and by 1914, when the first European championships took place at St. Moritz, France, there were more than a hundred bobsled runs in Europe. In 1923 the Federation Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing was created to set up rules. The next year, bobsledding was introduced into the Olympics at Chamonix, France and has been a recognized Olympic event since 1928. Equipment
There are two types of racing sleds-a 2-man and a 4-man, weighing approximately 200 kg (440 lbs) and 275 kg (605 lbs) respectively. 'Junior Bobs,' sleds for beginners, are significantly lighter, weighing about 70 kg (154 lbs). The weight and dimensions of the sleds are standardized for competition purposes, but components, such as steering reins, seats and push bars, are often customized to fit individual pilots and crew. Clothing and Protective Gear
Bobbers wear snug-fitting stretchy speed suits, helmets, goggles, padding, gloves, and special spiked shoes, to ensure a firm grip on the ice during the push start.

A New Olympic Sport?
By Rod Mar, The Seattle Times
One of the best parts about covering an Olympics is the camaraderie that exists among the shooters.
At the end of any night, you can look around at your peers, and after the subject of "anyone up for a drink or a bite to eat?" comes, "what are you covering tomorrow?"
And the answer to that on any given day might be, "downhill", "ski-jumping", "speed-skating", or "aerials". It's a good thing no one asked me the night before my most unusual assignment of the games. I woke up before dawn to catch a media bus to park city, where we bribed a bus driver to drop us off at a resort called "the canyons" where I was the only photographer with a small group of reporters to cover.... Shovel racing.

Flowers vies for second Olympic gold
Former track athlete quickly became one of world's best in the bobsled.
By DAVE SCHEIBER, Times Staff Writer Published August 10, 2005 Until five years ago, everything Vonetta Flowers knew about bobsledding came from the 1993 comedy Cool Runnings , based on the true story of a Jamaican team's unlikely entry in the Winter Olympics. So Flowers was a rather improbable candidate herself for Olympic bobsled glory in 2002.
