Racism and Religious Intolerance by Robert Bergner Peace is not just the absence of war. It is about our day-to-day relationships with our families, our neighbors, people in our towns and cities and in other countries. Peace is also how we cope with people different from ourselves. Harvey Gilman
A Portrait of Friends Racism and religious intolerance today: a sketch Humanity divides itself into myriad factions along fault lines of race, color, religion, caste, sex, age, ability, country of origin and language. From each of these fissures, in turn, the poisoned waters of hurt, oppression, injury and death bubble forth. A few blocks south of United Nations Headquarters in New York, on a three hundred yard stretch of East River waterfront, the day-to-day realities of racial discrimination and oppression in the United States reveal themselves in mute, if not silent, living tableau. The Water Club Bar and Restaurant occupies the southern end of this cultural portrait. A converted barge floating on the East River, this swank establishment attracts a well-to-do, sharply dressed, overwhelmingly white clientele. The handsome women and men who greet those customers are white. The men who haul the garbage bags from the kitchen in the rear are Hispanic. The man who vacuums the floor is African-American. A dinner at the Water Club costs at least $50, enough to feed a person in New York City for a week

Kavitha meets Dr. Ocloo, a self-made entrepreneur dedicated to empowering Ghanaian women and youth through industry and agriculture. Includes information on women's roles in Ghana. See the Making A Difference below for an activity that helps students appreciate all types of jobs that are important in their respective towns and communities. Abeja - Camera Shy *Kid's Version Available Abeja and Kavitha take a stroll in Accra, Ghana, soon after their arrival in the West African country. Abeja finds many photo opportunities but not much interest from her potential subjects. The trekkers have taken beautiful photos in each country they've visited so far and have done so with few problems (except for the occasional stolen camera!). But in Ghana, they have been met with some resistance. Part of this resistance comes from governmental fear of a political coup and it partly comes from a shyness amongst the Ghanaian people. Discuss with your students the topic of privacy and respect. What should the trekkers consider before snapping photos of people and government-related objects? Is it sometimes better to go without a photo? Kevin - One Wild Ride: Breaking Traffic Laws in Burkina Faso Kevin describes his love of motorcycles (and his accident), and tells a story about riding one in Burkina Faso and the misadventures that followed.

Black supremacy
[Categories: Racism, Prejudices, Political theories]
Black supremacy is the belief that (A person with dark skin who comes from Africa (or whose ancestors came from Africa)) blacks are (Click link for more info and facts about racially) racially superior to members of other races.
Black supremacy vs. white supremacy
It its simplest form, black supremacy is the belief in the inherent superiority of the "black race." Unlike many white supremacists, who often embrace the label, some black supremacists do not regard their belief in black superiority as equivalent to white supremacy. They reject the notion that their tenets are similar to white supremacy doctrines because they believe that white supremacy has been reinforced and sustained worldwide by instruments of Western economic, political and military power and black supremacist groups have not had a similar effect on white groups.
In modern history, black supremacy has been a reactionary phenomenon manifested among various religions or cults, claiming to be an ideological tool in framing a kind of liberation theology for the societally marginalized and oppressed. Scholar and philosopher (Click link for more info and facts about Cornel West) Cornel West comments in his essay Malcolm X and Black Rage
...The basic aim of Black Muslim theology with its distinct Black supremacist account of the origins of white people was to counter white supremacy. Yet this preoccupation with white supremacy still allowed white people to serve as the principal point of reference. That which fundamentally motivates one still dictates the terms of what one thinks and does so the motivation of a Black supremacist doctrine reveals how obsessed one is with white supremacy....

Matrices of Historical Trends
Longer-term historical trends in resource use and the quality of the environment can be summarized in matrix form, as shown in the two examples in Figure 9 below, and in Figures 15 and 16 in Chapter V. Historical trends matrices often show that local people recognize long-term trends in their environment and in their interaction with it. They usually have hypotheses about the causes of such trends, even if they do not fully understand the causes. Trends matrices are a good example of an information-gathering tool that is also in part an analytical tool; they automatically organize environmental information in a way that helps people think about cause and effect, and identify problems and opportunities. Creating trends matrices using participatory techniques can be an effective way to assess people’s awareness and knowledge of an environmental trend. This assessment is important because the assumption that people lack knowledge and awareness is often used to argue for environmental education activities.

Vatican Lists 17 Missionaries Who Suffered Violent Deaths
VATICAN CITY, JAN. 2, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Seventeen missionaries— priests, religious and laity—lost their lives in 2004 at the hands of robbers or assas-sins.
The Vatican Congre-gation for the Evan-gelization of Peoples published statistics about the mission-aries and ecclesi-astical personnel who were killed or who sacrificed their lives last year, aware of the dangers they faced in carrying their apostolates and witness to the faith.
Africa registered the greatest number of deaths: five priests, and a man and woman religious. In the Americas (in Mexico, Guatemala and Chile) at least three priests died, in addition to a priest slain in Colombia.
Asia "seems to live in a special way fundamentalist tensions," the Vatican dicastery said. It said that three Catholic Pakistani youths were beaten to death under false accusations or under pressure to make them renounce the faith.
In India, a priest was found dead after suffering threats for visiting Hindu families, where he had been well-received, the congregation said.
