WHERE TO GO Albuquerque Boating By Mario Malvino The Taos County Line run is true Rocky Mountain gnar. Historic Route 66 runs through Albuquerque, New Mexico. At the Central Avenue Bridge, Route 66 crosses the Rio Grande, where local boaters get their kicks plying the muddy waters and bird-watching just west of Old Town. In Albuquerque, the Rio Grande is ideal for a canoe trip beneath the old cottonwoods, and to the northeast the river provides more than 80 miles of Wild and Scenic whitewater. Six miles upstream from Route 66, I slide my canoe into the chocolate-colored water. As I reach midstream, a bald eagle watches me from the cottonwoods on the riverbank. Albuquerque is one of those rare metropolitan areas where bald-eagle sightings are common along the river during the winter and early spring. Downstream, I listen to the shrill calls of a dozen sandhill cranes flying above while a belted kingfisher flutters across my bow. The city is about an hour north of Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, where thousands of geese, ducks, snowy egrets, sandhill cranes, and eagles spend the winter. Even endangered whooping cranes can be sighted at the refuge. On the river in Albuquerque, expect to see a multitude of birds that make the lush Rio Grande Central Flyway their home. The city is located at the 5,000-foot elevation between the Sandia Mountains, rising on its eastern edge, and the Rio Grande, running west of Old Town. It is one of the oldest inhabited cities in America. Evidence of settlement in the area dates back 12,000 years. On a volcanic escarpment on the city's West Mesa, thousands of ancient petroglyphs dating from 1000 to 1600 are etched in rocks at Petroglyph National Monument. The city was established by a group of Spanish families in 1706 and named Villa de San Felipe de Alburquerque in honor of Viceroy Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva, the Duke of Alburquerque (the first r fell out of use over time). Today, Indian merchants still sell their handmade jewelry along narrow streets lined with 300-year-old adobe homes a few blocks from the high-rises of downtown.

Babine River Corridor Provincial Park Carp Lake Provincial Park - Carp Lake Park is 141 km northwest of Prince George and the main access road to the park joins Highway 97 at the community of McLeod Lake. Canoeing and kayaking are very popular at this park. The Islands offer backcountry camping and you can register at the boat launch at Carp Lake. The Lake is subject to high winds and consequently rough waters which can be responsible for swamping the unwary. Watch the weather and always wear life-jackets. Finger-Tatuk Provincial Park Kitlope Heritage Conservancy Protected Area - This park is located at the head of the Gardner Canal, on British Columbia's central coast, approximately 50 km northwest of Bella Coola and 120 km southeast of the town of Kitimat. The area is accessed by boat only. There are paddling, canoeing and kayaking opportunities at this park. Good paddling on Kitlope Lake and Tezwa River. The area is accessed by boat to the head of the Gardener Canal. Visitors should be experienced in ocean navigation and wilderness survival. Visitors can use jet boats to access Kitlope Lake and Kitlope River systems.

New Hampshire Rivers Management and Protection Program Souhegan River Nomination VII. RESOURCE ASSESSMENT
  • Natural Resources Managed Resources Cultural Resources Recreational Resources Fishery
  • Identify the type and location of any high quality recreational fisheries or areas with such potential which are present in the river (as determined by the NH Fish and Game Department). Also indicate areas that have potential to be significant fisheries. As discussed earlier, the majority of the fishing in the River is for stocked trout.
  • Boating
  • Describe any significant recreational boating opportunities which are present on the river, including whether it is used for motorized boating. Indicate if the river is cited as significant for recreational boating in a publication of a national, regional or statewide recreation organization. Refer to the NH River Protection and Energy Development Project to determine the river's significance as a recreational boating river. Also note if boaters are attracted from beyond the local area and if there are areas with potential to be significant boating resources. The western sections of the Souhegan River from Greenville to Wilton provide whitewater canoeing and kayaking during the spring and other periods of high water. Both the Appalachian Mountain Club's (AMC) River Guide and the New England Whitewater River Guide identify these sections of the River as good intermediate whitewater. The AMC guide classifies the rapids in this section as Class II, III and IV. This stretch of the River is very popular with canoers and kayakers because it provides good training runs, the water is clean, the area is easily accessed and the ice melts early in the spring. The Boston and New Hampshire AMC's and the Merrimack Valley Paddlers organize numerous trips on the Souhegan River every year.

Recreational value Free-flowing rivers and lakes behind dams offer recreational opportunities. The types of recreational activities offered by lakes and rivers are different from one another, and therefore the removal of a dam will change the character of the recreational activities available. Members of your community may favor or oppose dam removal on the basis of the possible changes in recreational opportunities. Further, recreation-based businesses depend on the character of the recreational opportunities in the surrounding area. For the purposes of this module, recreation has been split into two different categories for consideration. The first category is recreation by community members, that is, a valuation of the recreational benefits that each option has for residents of your community. The second category is the economic benefit gained from tourists from outside the community. The valuation process for each of these is different.

Impoundments provide several pond and lake recreational activities. Many impoundments in Wisconsin offer excellent sport-fishing opportunities. The fisheries found in impoundments are generally warm- and cool- water fisheries supporting smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, panfish, and many others. Impoundments also offer boating opportunities, such as motorboating, rowboating, sailing and flatwater canoeing and kayaking. Impoundments can be used for swimming and innertubing. Larger impoundments offer waterskiing, kneeboarding, and wakeboarding. Impoundments that freeze over in the winter provide opportunities for ice fishing, ice skating and hockey. Lakes may support waterfowl habitat, providing hunting opportunities.

    Boating
Water is a vital part of life in Southeast Alaska. Aside from the airborne stuff, water is central to many people's livelihoods and lifestyles. Boats are almost as common as autos in the towns of the Tongass National Forest. And boats of preference range from yachts to dinghys, and include everything in between. Boating "Rules of the Road" are important anywhere. Conditions in some high-traffic areas, such as the Stikine River , have prompted frequent users to develop etiquette guidelines for the safety and boating pleasure of all. Boating, especially in the cold waters of Alaska, calls for awareness and preparedness. Adverse, rapidly changing weather conditions, limited access to supplies and help, large tidal fluctuations and the presence of bears all combine to make recreation in this area both a rewarding experience and one that necessitates careful planning. The following information is intended to aid in that planning and cover some important aspects which you might not consider at first. Climate
    Tides

The tides in Southeast Alaska are subject to very large fluctuations, ranging from -4 to +20 feet. This can make some areas inaccessible at low tide and also create some unexpected hazards such as whirlpools and rapids where narrow passages exist between two larger bodies of water. Therefore, when laying out a trip, it is advisable to consult a tide book. Tide books are available through most local businesses.
