Kayaks and related equipment now are available with various modifications, depending on individual need. No specific guidelines exist for boating with a disability because everyone is unique. However, one great way to familiarize yourself with a sport is to go on an outing. Organizations listed at the end of this section, such as Wilderness Inquiry, will have everything you need for kayaking, including trained guides and special equipment which you can try before deciding whether to buy your own. It is best to consult with a recreational therapist or physical therapist who can assess your ability to maneuver a kayak and determine how you can compensate for any disability. Certified Red Cross instructors also provide training. Consult with manufacturers of adaptive equipment or their sales staffs to determine what specific equipment you need. Here are some sample adaptations:
  • For persons with lower extremity weakness, a kayak can be adapted with a custom-made seat, using ensolite, if necessary, to protect the buttocks.

Kayaking and canoeing in the Paddlers on the Arkansas will encounter a full range of water conditions from easy Class I ripples and small waves all the way up to extreme Class VI whitewater which is nearly impossible to run. No other river has the variety or continuous number of rapids. They follow one after the other. You get out of one rapid and start to relax and you're in another. Thrills like this continue one rapid after another on the Arkansas. The scenery along the river is fantastically beautiful and the wildlife abundant. Deer, elk, and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep are often seen near the river. Following is a brief tour of the paddling areas on the Arkansas River starting at the northern boundary of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area.

On this page: Encyclopedia Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping canoeing Encyclopedia canoeing, sport of propelling a canoe through water. John MacGregor, an English barrister and founder of the Royal Canoe Club (est. 1865), is generally credited with being the initiator of modern sport canoeing. Between 1849 and 1869, MacGregor wrote a number of popular books describing his experiences on long canoe trips throughout Europe. Sport canoeing today may either involve recreational journeys or fixed-distance racing. Racing canoes are propelled by either sails or paddles. The International Challenge Cup, one of the oldest existing canoeing trophies, was originally offered by the New York Canoe Club (1885) as a perpetual challenge sailing prize. Canoe racing with paddles first became an official Olympic event at the Berlin games in 1936. The two types of Olympic canoe races are those among kayaks and Canadian canoes. The kayak , a buoyant arctic canoe that is completely covered except for its cockpit(s), is raced by both men and women. The Canadian, the typical North American canoe, is raced only by men. Canoes are also used as combination outdoors recreation-transportation vehicles. This type of canoeing is especially popular in the N United States. Whitewater canoeing, in which the vessel is navigated through rapids, is quite popular in many areas of the United States.

    Where We Teach:
We start at our own private sandy beach/pond in Parsonsfield, Maine. As your comfort level progresses we then go to the Saco River where we take advantage of learning moving water skills. Here as your boating skills advance, you have the option of playing in class II and low class III white water. We provide all top notch equipment for our Outdoor Adventure Schools; boats by Old Town Canoe, Dagger, Necky, Perception, paddles, spray skirts, helmets, and personal flotation devices. An excellent lunch and snack are included with all classes. Our Style of Instruction:
We limit our student to instructor ratio along with keeping students of comparable aptitudes together for a more positive learning experience. Southern Maine Guide Service emphasizes the development of safety and sound paddling techniques which are the key to enjoyment and success in whitewater boating. While everyone wants to get on moving water as soon as possible, we will continually work on fundamentals as we progress. If it is not second nature on flat water it won't be on moving water! We start on flat and slow moving water and work on wet escapes, bracing, eddy turns, peel outs, ferries, and water reading. When we move to quicker water on the river we sometimes spend the afternoon in one rapid working on these skills. Beginning to learn how to surf is also done early in the program. As skills develop we will gradually go to rapids with faster and rougher water but we will always make sure students are capable of handling it. Our goal is to paddle and enjoy whitewater, not just go down it! We will also work on developing a roll at our Private Pond where many of our students learn to roll during a one or two day course. We will later work on rolls in moving water.

The Huron River may be the best canoeing river in southeastern Michigan. The trip from Island Lake south to Strawberry Lake is a rather slow, but peaceful paddle. From Strawberry Lake south to the Portage Lake Dam you'll be traversing a number of lakes with fairly slow moving river in-between. From the Dam south to Dexter is a combination of shallow river, some light rapids, a few slow moving sections. Dexter to Barton Pond includes a fun little set of rapids at Delhi, fairly slow for the most part. From Barton Pond through Ypsilanti's Ford and Belleville lakes you have a series of dams and ponds.. My favorite canoeing section is from the Portage Lake Dam to Delhi, a very nice 3 or 4 hour trip. Midwest Scouting has a great web page on the Potawatomi Canoe Trail (from the Halfmoon chain to Portage Lake, from there you could continue down to Ann Arbor and beyond). This route can be a bit tricky sometimes, very narrow from Highland lake to Portage, often having to maneuver around, over, through fallen trees. Plan some extra time.

    Paddling and Boating in Florida:
Florida Guide to Nature Travel, Ecotourism and Outdoors Adventures
Whether you choose a canoe or a kayak, paddling your way through Florida's natural areas is one way to explore our water-rich state and in some places, it's virtually the only way. Most of Florida is a peninsula, surrounded by sea water. With the Gulf of Mexico on the western side of the state, the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern and the Caribbean Sea not far off the southern end, Florida has a lot of shoreline to explore even natural shoreline thick with mangroves that canoes and kayaks seem perfectly made for. But inland, there are a lot of rivers and streams, too, where you can paddle through forests and past meadows. Northern Florida is home to hundreds of springs that invite paddlers to float down their runs. Central Florida is dotted with a myriad of lakes of all sizes. And in southern Florida, the Everglades and the Ten Thousand Islands are where paddling a canoe or kayak is the best mode of transportation if you really want to see the true River of Grass. There are so many places to take a canoe or kayak that we can't list all of them here; there is so much water in Florida that almost any of the places described on our
