Was an Indian Boarding School from 1891-1911 Click on the timeline to move through Indian School History Fort Lewis was deactivated and turned over to the Secretary of the Interior for an Indian School. After Lewis Morgan was named Superintendent, the school opened with 51 children enrolled. Tribes represented Navajo, Ute, Sioux and Apache. The boarding school taught grades kindergarten through 6th grade. In addition to teaching the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, its mission was an industrial training school (agriculture, home economics, carpentry). The children were assimilated and trained to accept the culture of America. The use of Indian names and wearing of native attire were discouraged. Therefore students took names of notable American leaders (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, etc.) The old military hospita l was converted to a girls dormitory. Return to Top C.C. Duncan, United States Indian Inspector, reported that 65 acres was being cultivated by the school. During the year it produced 18 tons of oat hay, 17,350 pounds of potatoes, 200 pounds of turnips, 2973 pounds of onions, 240 pounds of beans and 2700 pounds of other vegetables. The school also owned 7 horses, 4 swine, and 36 domestic fowl. Thomas Breen was named Superintendent in 1894 and served until August 1903. Dr. Breen ran the school much like a military post. The members dressed in uniforms and performed military drill and parade every Sunday.

College-Preparatory Boarding Schools
College preparatory boarding schools' primary goal is to prepare students for the academic rigors of college life. If you're a generally well-motivated student seeking to excel and explore new opportunities, this is the type of boarding school you're looking for. All the schools listed in our boarding school directory are exclusively college-preparatory boarding schools. Depending on the school, college-prep boarding schools may also have programs to accomodate students with learning disorders (e.g., Attention Deficit Disorder). Where Do We Go from Here?
Boarding School History Pratt was an Army Captain, not an educator. He had been put in charge of 72 Apache prisoners held at Ft. Marion near St. Augustine, Florida. The Army said that prisoners were suspected of having murdered white settlers, but never proved this claim. Captain Pratt started a prison school for the men in his charge. When the Ft. Marion prisoners were allowed to return home in 1878, he convinced 22 of them to continue their schooling. The Hampton Institute, a school for freed slaves in Virginia, accepted several of them. Carlisle’s opening allowed Pratt to resign his Army commission and to practice his ideas about educating Indians. Pratt’s goal was to "kill the Indian, not the man." In order to assimilate American Indian children into European culture, Pratt subjected them to what we would call brainwashing tactics today. These are the same methods that cult leaders use to coerce recruits to commit completely to a new way of thinking.
Boarding School Brainwashing Techniques
  • Many boarding schools were established far away from reservations so that students would have no contact with their families and friends. Parents were discouraged from visiting and, in most cases, students were not allowed to go home during the summer.

Boarding Schools
Beginning in the nineteenth century, boarding schools played a fundamental role in the programs designed by the U.S. government to foster the assimilation of native peoples into the mainstream of American society. Reformers and politicians who favored the policy of reservation allotment also advanced the concept of placing Indian children in residential schools where they would speak English, learn a vocation, and practice farming. Advocates of boarding schools argued that industrial training, in combination with several years of isolation from family, would diminish the influence of tribalism on a new generation of American Indians. For fifty years after the first federally administered residential school was established in 1879 at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, thousands of Native American children and youth were sent to live, work, and be educated in the schools. Prior to Carlisle, most American Indians had little experience with the boarding-school concept. Some had attended mission schools, and three unique institutions had developed earlier in the century: the Choctaw Academy and the Cherokee Male and Female Seminaries. The Choctaw Academy in Kentucky, founded in 1825, was a male boarding school that Indian and white children attended. The academy was funded by proceeds from Choctaw land cessions in the Southeast during the 1820s. By 1851, the Cherokees in Oklahoma had opened male and female seminaries near Tahlequah to educate members of their nation. Cherokee students studied a curriculum that was patterned after that of Mount Holyoke Seminary in Massachusetts.

The Boarding School experience was, according to one of its harshest and most vocal critics, Zitkala Sa, a"miserable state of cultural dislocation," that created problems long after the children returned home. As the stories below reveal the boarding school experience not only alienated the children from their families but also from their culture as many of the children were removed to early to remember all but traces of their traditional life styles.
An Indian Boy's Story By Ah-nen-la-de-ni[Daniel La France]
In this autobiographical tale the author shares his experience as a young man in an American system of cultural imperialism so pervasive that the name applied to Ah-nen-la-de-ni's people, the "Mohawk," had an English, not a Native American origination. Ah-nen-la-de-ni's story poignantly demonstrates the emotional and physical burdens placed on young Native American children at these institutions of incorporation. Using the term "inmates" to describe the students, Ah-nen-la-de-ni reveals the physical and psychological fear felt by the young students and the state of cultural purgatory that this experience left its victims in as they were at once alienated from their own culture and denied access to the culture of the mainstream.

Free Service for Finding UK Private Schools / Public Schools
There are 2,500+ Private/Public schools in the UK which are Private of local or central government control. They are sometimes called fee-paying (or, more accurately, fee-charging) Private/Public schools are so called because they charge parents fees. The English usage of the term "public school" is in direct opposition to what any foreign English speaker would expect. In countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, the United States and Canada, a "public school" is the equivalent of an English "state school", while an independent , fee-charging school is called a "private school". This is also the generic name for all fee-paying schools for children in England and Wales, although rarely used for those which categorise themselves as public schools . Preparatory schools (historically also known as "private schools ", as they were usually privately owned by the headmaster) take children from the age of eight (or younger) and prepare them for their entrance exams to public schools The term "public" (first adopted by Eton College) refers to the fact that the school is open to the paying public, as opposed to a religious school, which was open only to members of a certain church. It also distinguished it from a private education at home (usually only practical for the very wealthy who could afford tutors).

GRADE LEVEL: Secondary BASIC CONCEPTS: Impact of the Indian Boarding Schools ORGANIZING GENERALIZATION: "A major conflict between cultures occurred when the federal government attempted to bring American Indians into the mainstream of society following the 1871 conclusion of the treaty-signing period. The boarding school was the primary institution encouraging acculturation of Indian youth due to the school's adherence to a regime that reflected the military fortifications in which schools were housed. Different conceptions of time and history were taught in boarding schools, and Indian students were confronted with a school culture and curriculum vastly different from their own tribal reality." quote from From Boarding Schools to Self Determination by Willard Bill CULTURE AREA: Entire United States TIME PERIOD: BACKGROUND: In the post Civil War era idealistic reformers turned their attention to the "plight" of the Indian people, they believed that with the proper education and treatment Indians could become like other citizens: patriotic, and productive members of society. One of the first efforts was by Captain Richard Henry Pratt , who founded the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. His belief in the inferiority of Indian ways to those of whites led to his guiding principle, "kill the Indian and save the man." The devastation of the Indian Boarding Schools is still being felt by many Native American people and their communities.

Considering a girl's boarding high school in the East
Jan 2004 We are considering a girl's boarding high school in the East because it seems like a wonderful fit for my daughter. It's not because she's a problem kid or I want to get rid of her. I welcome suggestions, advice and hearing about experiences from families whose high school students have gone to boarding school. Thank you. Barbara My daughter entered an East Coast boarding school this last September because of the outstanding educational opportunites- not because, as many West Coast people assume, we are having family troubles with her [because most boarding schools are in the East Coast, many East Coast families are more knowledgeable about and accepting of boarding schools]. She loves the school, the feeling of independence, her new friendships with people from all over the world, and the vast academic course, arts/music, and athletic offerings.

    Boarding Program for Troubled Teen?
March 2005 We have a troubled relative who is 13, and out of control. Her immediate family is from out of the country and is not equipped to deal with her current problems, which range from drug use and stealing to dangerous boyfriends and cutting herself, and regularly dissappearing. We have already called the police and Child Protective Services, there is not much they say they can do at this point and we want to see if we can find a safe place for her to be contained, such as a boarding school that would be affordable and effective for us. Please let us know if you know of any schools, camps, programs, or even group homes that would be a good option for us (she has MediCal, and her mother is on Disability). Many thanks for your help. my advice the the family with the ''out of control teen'' is to look on line for therapeutic boarding schools. ''The ASpen group'' is a great network of schools for troubled kids. My son went to Stone Mountain school for boys. It helped him a lot. They have a school for girls in Arizona i think. Good luck. mom of troubled kid

Learn about the benefits - find a girls' boarding school
Many parents of girls know adolescence does not arrive on a specified date. They know it has nothing to do with a magical number like 14. The signs might be sporadic at first: a sudden outburst that seems like an overreaction, a little more sarcasm peppering their answers to your questions, a little less cooperation. Teenaged girls show pretty typical behavior patterns: increased need for independence, more interest in their appearance and boys' interest in them, less tolerance of parents' need to know what they are doing, emotional outbursts, and often outright hostility toward any attempt to "guide" or advise them. Most teenaged girls move through this phase and mature into young women. However, some teenaged girls seem to spiral out of control, making the lives of their parents and siblings miserable.
