The Reservation Boarding School System
in the United States, 1870 -1928 Justification and Rationalization Day Schools vs. Boarding Schools Carlisle Indian School and Richard Henry Pratt The System Begins to Fail By way of introduction: The Reservation Boarding School System was a war in disguise. It was a war between the United States government and the children of the First People of this land. Its intention was that of any war, elimination of the enemy. The reason this war is difficult to recognize is because it was covered by the attractive patina of a concept called "Manifest Destiny." Manifest Destiny was a philosophy by which the white european invader imagined themselves as having a divine right to take possession of all land and its fruits. The reason that the Concept of Manifest Destiny was so effective was because, as it steam rolled across the land, it dragged the masses with it. The hooks that dragged these masses were many and were forged by Christianity and the Christian imprimatur. Although the fuel that energized Manifest Destiny was economic, the inspiration was in its alignment with divine will. This quote from the essay

Resources The term boarding school fundamentally refers to classic British boarding schools, and most boarding schools around the world are modeled on the classic British boarding school. In the United Kingdom, around 700 schools, both single-sex and co-educational, offer boarding places. Most also admit a significant number of day pupils. Boarders enjoy benefits such as close and long-lasting friendships and immediate access to staff who can assist with studies. There is usually also an excellent range of facilities and activities offered. In recent years uk boarding has become more flexible in line with demand. Most full uk boarding schools have a system of exeats (weekends out) that allow pupils to go home for short visits on a flexible basis. Many schools now offer flexi- and weekly boarding options, enabling pupils to spend more time with their families. In some schools, pupils may board for just half the week, or sleep over on an occasional basis if the need arises.

Overview In the late 1800s, the United States supported an educational experiment that the government hoped would change the traditions and customs of American Indians. Special boarding schools were created in locations all over the United States with the purpose of "civilizing" American Indian youth . Thousands of Native American children were sent far from their homes to live in these schools and learn the ways of white culture. Many struggled with loneliness and fear away from their tribal homes and familiar customs. Some lost their lives to the influenza, tuberculosis, and measles outbreaks that spread quickly through the schools. Others thrived despite the hardships, formed lifelong friendships, and preserved their Indian identities. Through photographs, letters, reports, interviews, and other primary documents, students explore the forced acculturation of American Indians through government-run boarding schools. Objectives While completing this unit, students will:

The following bibliography lists reference material dealing with Indian boarding schools during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These resources include material found in the Labriola National American Indian Data Center in the University Libraries at Arizona State University, websites, and other research facilities. This subject guide is also located on the Labriola Center website at www.asu.edu/lib/archives/labriola.htm
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BOARDING SCHOOLS The most famous boarding school for Indian children was the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, founded by Richard Pratt in 1879. The philosophy and intent of this and most subsequent schools was to assimilate Indian children by removing them from their native cultures, and teaching them the manners, dress, and job skills that were deemed important by the school founders and administrators. While boarding schools still exist, most had changed their practices of forced assimilation by the 1930s. This bibliography only covers the schools from 1879 to 1940. It does not contain any novels. It is not a complete list.

Essay by Carolyn J. Marr
Introduction
The goal of Indian education from the 1880s through the 1920s was to assimilate Indian people into the melting pot of America by placing them in institutions where traditional ways could be replaced by those sanctioned by the government. Federal Indian policy called for the removal of children from their families and in many cases enrollment in a government run boarding school. In this way, the policy makers believed, young people would be immersed in the values and practical knowledge of the dominant American society while also being kept away from any influences imparted by their traditionally-minded relatives.

Boarding Schools Nurture Low-Income Students
By Jay Mathews Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, September 21, 2004; Page A08 Lynnette Blackmon liked the small classes and energetic teachers at Maya Angelou Public Charter School in the District, but she was often hours late. "I had a big tardy issue," said the tall, slender 17-year-old. Most schools try to persuade students to get out of bed in the morning by lowering their grades or giving them detention when they don't, but Maya Angelou is one of a small but growing number of schools that have a different approach to the problem. They invite teenagers who need extra help to live in school quarters.
Maya Angelou residential students study together at night. The school is one of a few D.C. institutions offering the advantages and support of boarding schools to low-income students.

Welcome to Grennaskolan
A school should pursue further development, be filled of understanding and opportunity, promote inquisitiveness, and encourage initiative – simultaneously as it should mediate knowledge and skills required for a better life. It should provide those items that you know that you would like to have – but also show the way to things that you did not know you were lacking. It should provide the security required to enable you to grow peacefully as a person. And to enable comradeship and friendship that will continue much longer than just your time at school. Friends for life. A school should inspire great achievements in things both large and small, and should be a natural part of the society that you will later contribute to form. Grennaskolan is located right in the centre of Gränna, which is in the centre of Sweden, which is in the centre of the world. A small school with tremendous potential located in a small town with considerable opportunities. A perfect starting point for you who would like to continue to be the person you are – plus a little bit more. You may contact us by telephone at +46 (0)390-561 50, fax +46 (0)390-561 51 or email to

A school play at Harrow ("Another Country")

Independent schools do not receive funds from the government or local authorities. They charge school fees (some scholarships may be available for the brightest pupils or for children from poorer families: see below ). The schools select pupils according to ability by using an entrance exam . Schools are often single-sex boys schools or girls schools , although many boys schools accept girls in the sixth form (between the ages of 16 and 18). Many of the schools accept a mixture of full boarders (who live in the school grounds during term-time), weekly boarders (who return home only at weekends) and dayboys daygirls (who return home each evening), but some are only for day pupils.
