Boa Constictor Care Sheet and Information
Please click here for a printable PDF version. Common Name: Boa Constrictor Latin name: Boa Constrictor Native to: Mexico through South America, including the surrounding islands. Size: Boa constrictors are a large snake, reaching lengths of 8 to 12 feet and weighing up to 30 to 60 pounds. Females tend to be larger than males. Life span: If properly cared for boa constrictors usually live 20 to 30 years. General appearance: Due to the vast variety of subspecies and different genetic morphs, exact description is difficult. Generally boas exhibit saddle like patterns running the length of the body to a red tail. Coloration can vary from grays to browns with younger snakes being lighter in color than adults. Housing requirements: Enclosure: Hatchling boa constrictors can be housed in a 20-gallon aquarium, but they will soon out grow this enclosure. Usually only custom-built cages are the only suitable enclosures for adult specimens. Cages should at a minimum be 8 feet long by 2 to 3 feet wide by 4 feet tall. When constructing cages it is important to not use unfinished wood or other porous materials since these are difficult to clean and can harbor disease.

Why Snakes Are Feared... Saint George killed the last dragon, and he was called a hero for it. I've never seen a dragon, and I wish he would have left at least one. Saint Patrick made a name for himself by running the snakes out of Ireland, leaving the place vulnerable to rodent infestation. This business of making saints out of men who exterminate their fellow creatures has got to stop. All I'm saying is, it's starting to get a little lonely up here at the top of the food chain. - A Whitney Brown

To: ruth@chaos.net.nz Hello there, I was cruising your site, and found those pictures of a snake that ate a man. I've seen many similar pictures, and have even heard of a certain scientist who studies how the human bodies are folded in the stomach. The part of the world that this occurs in is Asia, and the snakes are almost always Reticulated Pythons, not Boa Constrictors. Boa Constrictors grow to a maximum of 12 feet in length, and originate in South America. Reticulated pythons can grow up to 30 feet in length, making it the longest snake in the world. After checking out the pictures, the snake is definitely a Reticulated Python. =) For a bit more info: Snakes eating humans is something that happens in the US too. Check out

This discussion topic submitted by Jeff Eakin ( eakinjl@po.muohio.edu ) on 2/28/99.
My discussion will be dealing with a snake of the family Boidae, an animal that we will probably encounter on our trip to Costa Rica. During our trip we will encounter many of the different species of this snake. They have many different appearances and adaptations that set each specie apart. My presentation will present the traits unique to each specie. First, however, I will be talkingabout generalities for both reptiles and then constrictor snakes. Updated March 14, 2003 Boa constrictor ), the legendary non-venomous strangler found throughout much of Central and South America. But it's not the large size of boas that interests Auburn University herpetology graduate student Scott Boback. It's the smaller size of the boas found on certain Central American islands. In the Snake Cayes, a group of small islands just off the coast of Belize, boas grow to only a fraction of the size of their mainland relatives. Will Identical Diet, Habitat Produce Identical Size? It's the lab-reared generation of snakes that may help Boback to solve this "nature versus nurture" dilemma. He plans to study the offspring carefully to determine whether varying diets or genetics lie behind the differences in island and mainland boa constrictors. By feeding snakes from both locations identical food, raising them in the same environment, and carefully charting their growth, Boback hopes to learn more about the factors determining their differing sizes. "The questions that I'm asking are critically important to understanding snake biology and evolution in general," he explained.

THE SNOW BOA
This is the first snow boa ever produced. This beautiful snake was 10 months old when photographed. For many reasons, boa constrictors (Boa constrictor) have been a mainstay in the pet industry for some 40 years. As a rule, boa constrictors possess mild dispositions, do not obtain giant sizes and do not require a great deal of technical husbandry to maintain in captivity.
These albinos represent two different bloodlines produced by Peter Kahl. With the boas' ever-growing popularity, a demand exists to produce animals with exceptionally odd colors and patterns. Boa constrictors are on their way to becoming the "corn snake" of the boa and python enthusiasts' world. So far, seven naturally occurring variations of color and pattern have been demonstrated to be inheritable genetic traits: albino, anerythristic, striped, hypomelanistic, "arabesque", "motley" and "jungle."

Herewith, a summary of my reasons, beginning with some of the issues that, while important, have received relatively little recent attention in the campaign. 1) EDUCATION. America's public schools have long been dominated by a coalition of people who are much more concerned with the maintenance of certain bureaucratic forms than they are with education. The Democratic Party is completely in bed with these forces, and there is no possibility whatsoever of substantial improvement in education under a Democratic administration.

(Source of image: Special thanks to Jax historian Cleve Powell. Used with permission by JacksonvilleStory.com) The next time you walk around in Arlington, keep an eye out for boa constrictors: At least one has popped up! Proof is in the picture above. The giant creature sparked quite a commotion in the neighborhood in about 1950. Thus, an expert was called to the rescue. T he world's most famous snake specialist, the legendary Ross Allen, ran a reptile institute at Silver Springs near Ocala. The serpent hunter drove to Arlington and then clumped through the brush and poked under rocks. He finally found the boa in an armadillo hole at what is now Tree Hill Nature Center. (This is l ocated near the intersection of Arlington Road and the Arlington Expressway. ) What do you do if a monster doesn't want to come out of hiding? Mr. Allen and an associate, Dr. Neil, borrowed shovels from a nearby home and started digging. They eventually recovered the snake and took him to Silver Springs. A TIGHT SQUEEZE A witness to this strange occurrence was Arlington historian Cleve Powell, a boy at the time. As Mr. Powell told JacksonvilleStory.com, Ross Allen let him hold the 10.5 foot rainbow boa on his shoulders. The expert casually warned him to apply pressure near the snake's head if the creature started to constrict. According to Mr. Powell, it's a wonder that he didn't choke the snake to death.

Does your classroom have any pets? Would you have any problems watching a puppy being fed to a snake? That's not something every kid can handle but it didn't seem to stop one teacher. A biology teacher in Kansas keeps two boa constrictors in his classroom. Sometimes he feeds them during class so students can see how they eat. He took it too far when he planned on feeding them three puppies . It doesn't make a difference that the puppies were unwanted. They had been donated by a school board member who operates a shelter where animals are put to sleep. Matthew Parton, the teacher, certainly wasn't being sensitive when it came to his students. Some students can't handle watching snakes eat rats and mice . Watching an animal that's normally considered a pet be devoured by a snake is asking too much from students. If it's during class time, do the kids have the option of not watching the eating process? There's a campaign to have Matthew fired, which may be a little harsh. Matthew needs to keep away from pets and stick to his snake's normal diet. Unless you're in China, puppies aren't part of the food chain. Hey, my name is Alicia and I am a student in Kentucky. My class and I visited this Web site and clicked on "Puppies fed to boa constrictor," and I almost had a heart attack. First, that is absolutely pathetic for that kind of news to even be revealed over the internet. Those puppies were innocent and should not have been fed to anything when they are so helpless and harmless. A snake should be fed rats or something that it is actually supposed to be fed, not puppies that are supposed to have homes, families, and love just like any human would want or need. I think that that teacher should be sued and fired. What kind of school would want to have a reputation like that? What school would allow something this disturbing to go on?

Quarantine puts the ‘squeeze’ on illegal boa constrictors
Quick thinking Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) officers have foiled an attempt to smuggle two boa constrictors into Australia, Federal Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Warren Truss said today. Quarantine and Customs officers discovered the boas at the Melbourne International Mail Centre last week during routine x-ray surveillance of international mail. “X-ray images of the parcel’s contents were unclear; however, with the expertise and experience of AQIS and Customs officers the images were ultimately correctly identified as snakes,” Mr Truss said. The snakes — a native species of South America — were found in a parcel from Greece, and carried a South Australian mailing address. They were 58-60 centimetres in length and aged six to eight months old. One boa was identified as male; the sex of the other is yet to be determined. The reptiles were packaged in a one-litre vacuum flask-type container, with a sealed lid that had a small airhole. The contents of the parcel were undeclared on the attached documentation.

Playing with the Big Boys: Handling Large Constrictors
Lenny Flank Last year, a 19-year old man was killed in New York City while preparing to feed his 13-foot Burmese python. In January 1994, a 6 foot python escaped from its owner in Santa Rosa, California, by crawling down the toilet, causing a panic among residents in the apartment building. In July 1993, a 15-year old boy in Commerce City, Colorado, was attacked and killed by an 11-foot Burmese Python. In June 1991, a nine year old boy in Long Beach, California, was bitten on the foot and coiled by a 12-foot pet python. In August 1984, a large python escaped its cage in Solvay, New York, causing a panic for nine days before it was found in the ceiling. In November 1980, a seven-month old girl in Dallas was killed when the family's 8-foot python escaped its cage and crawled into the crib, smothering the infant. Every time an incident like this occurs, the consequences for herpetoculturalists are severe. The fear and misunderstanding which surrounds reptiles (and their keepers) is increased, authorities become more likely to pass uninformed laws in an attempt to "do something" about the "problem", and the efforts of responsible herpers to educate the public about these animals are undermined and crippled.

Genera 11 recognised; see text. Boas are a type of snake that are members of the Boidae family. Boas are basal snakes that are "primitive" in evolutionary terms (i.e. less derived). They are constrictors and give birth to live young. They have anal spurs , a pair of claws on each side of the cloaca which are vestiges of legs. Boas are named after cows (bos) because of the old myth that boa snakes pursue cows and suckle them until they are drained to death. Boas have two subfamilies: Boinae or true boas and Erycinae or sand boas . Pythons are sometimes classified as a subfamily of Boidae, but are frequently listed under their own family, Pythonidae

True boas are medium-sized to large snakes. Females are usually larger than their male counterparts. Boas contain many subspecies based on locaility. They include Colombian, Suriname, Bolivian, Peruvian, Hog Island, Long Tail Peruvian, Argentine and more. The boas from the amazon basin are the most colorful possessing bright cherry red tails. It used to be said that boas were New World Snakes and pythons were Old World Snakes, but, with boas found on Madagascar and the Solomon Islands, this is not quite true. Instead, it is possible that boas have survived in evolutionarily isolated areas. South America, until a few million years ago, had a distinct fauna that included
