Classification and Range
The boa constrictor belongs to the family Boidae, which includes seven genera of boas, four genera of sand boas, and eight genera of pythons.* Though some of the 64 species in the family are less than 3.3 feet (1 m) in length, others are the largest snakes in the world; a green anaconda was recorded as being 37 feet (11.3 m) long! Boa constrictor ranges through much of Central and South America, from Mexico to Argentina, and to the Lesser Antilles and other islands. Habitat
Description
Boa constrictor constrictor and B. c. imperator subspecies.
Their relatively short tails are prehensile and able to securely grip branches. They have many small teeth for gripping their prey, but no fangs or venom. A boa kills by suffocation, tightening its coils when a captured animal exhales and preventing it from inhaling. Boas have spurs near the cloacal opening that are vestiges of the legs possessed by ancestors. In females, the spurs are usually smaller or less hooked, and may be invisible or absent. Life Span
One of the longest-lived of snakes, boa constrictors live 20 years or more in captivity. At the Philadelphia Zoological Park one lived 40 years.

Boa Constrictor
The animal featured on the cover of Software Portability with Imake is the boa constrictor, a snake of the Boidae family. Snakes were the last of the great reptile groups to appear; and, among living snakes, the Boids remain closest to their primitive form. In evidence are the remains of a pelvis and vestiges of hind legs that appear as spurs on either side of a Boid's cloaca (or vent). Males still use these vestigial limbs to help arouse females during mating. The Boids, which include boas, anacondas, and pythons, are the giants of the snake world (anacondas can reach lengths of thirty feet and can weigh over three hundred pounds). Boa constrictors are typically grey or silver with a series of brown or deep red saddles along their backs. They are found in the warmest parts of the Americas, from Mexico to Argentina, and can reach lengths up to eighteen feet. Their young are born live, the average brood consisting of thirty to fifty one-foot snakes. Boas feed on birds, reptiles, and mammals. A constrictor will seize prey with its mouth, swiftly coil around it, and tighten the grip so that the victim cannot expand its chest to breathe. Death by asphyxiation. Contrary to popular rumor or belief, boa constrictors pose little threat to humans. When a boa perceives danger, it will usually flee or threaten by hissing with a sound that can be heard over one hundred feet away. researched and written by Michael Kalantarian

Just before this book went to press, I caught wind of a "problem with the colophon." This naturally grabbed my attention, since I had just written and submitted the piece. It turned out that the author of the book took offense to the allusion to evolution. After some back-and-forth in email, I reluctantly agreed to rewrite the colophon

Animal of the Month May-June 2003
Boa Constrictor Boa constrictor Boa Constrictors are snakes that can grow between 3 to 14 feet long and can weigh over 100 pounds. The boa constrictor comes from the family Boidae , which has five genera of common boas, three genera of sand boas, and eight genera of pythons. Their bodies can have different patterns, such as oval, diamond, or bat-shaped, in colors of reddish-brown outlined in black, on a background of cream, pale tan or gray. Boas have short tails, which are used to grab things, such as branches. Boas' sharp teeth help them to get a good grip on their prey, but unlike some snakes, they do not have fangs or venom. They are constrictors. The boa constrictor kills its prey by suffocating it. The boa will tighten its coils when a captured animal exhales, and then because the prey cannot open its lungs, it cannot inhale. Boa constrictors have spurs near their cloaca (the opening that allows them to discharge urine and feces). These spurs are what is left of the legs their ancestors are believed to have had. On female boas, the spurs are usually hard to see, and sometimes are barely there at all. Boa constrictors live in many different environments, up to elevations of 3,300 feet, and can adapt to a wide variety of habitats. They prey on many types of animals, such as lizards, birds, rodents, monkeys and wild pigs. The female common boa keeps her eggs inside her until they hatch, so her young are born live. Most clutches have anywhere from 20-50 eggs. Females can keep the males sperm for quite a while before the fertilization actually happens, so over all gestation can take around 10 months. Also, the female will usually eat little or nothing while she is pregnant.

http://www.calzoo.com/html/boaconstrictors.html
CALZOO'S REFERENCE SHEET > Boa Constrictors Latin name Boa constrictor Maximum length 6 - 8 feet (approx) Native to Colombia Approximate life span 20+ years GENERAL INFORMATION
This is one of the most popular pet snakes due to their great temperament and beautiful markings. All the baby boas sold by California Zoological Supply are captive or farm bred. The baby season starts in January and ends around June. Boas are arboreal (tree climbing) snakes, so provide lots of climbing branches so they can move about. They are also nocturnal (active at night) so you will more than likely not see them move much during the day. These are great animals for anyone who wants something impressive and of a nice size but one that doesn't get too large. Albino Boa Constrictors are also slowly showing up on the market. The price is still prohibitive for most hobbyists, but should decrease in a few years.
ENCLOSURE
The enclosure should be no shorter than ½ the snakes body length. Baby Boas can live in a 20-gallon aquarium for up to a year but be prepared to get a larger enclosure later on. Boas are notorious escape artists so your enclosure can never be too secure. To avoid respiratory infections, the enclosure should provide plenty of ventilation. A secure hiding place is also important.
SUBSTRATE
As a substrate you can use Zoo Med REPTI-BARK™, Zoo Med CAGE CARPET or pine shavings. But DO NOT, under any circumstances, use cedar shavings! Its oils are toxic to reptiles. The substrate should remain dry.
