When African-American musicians emigrated northward to cities like Chicago, they heard the music of tin pan alley and jazz. They began to amplify their instruments electrically and to add drums and even horns. The single bluesman was transformed into the blues band, and a new era had begun.

Black Cat Blues Band
The Black Cat Blues Band is a four-piece blues band working out of Northern Virginia. Deriving influences from Mississippi Delta artists through to the present day, the Black Cat Blues Band offers an eclectic repertoire that reflects the band's traditional lineup - guitar, harmonica, bass, and drums. This band was born out of a shared passion for the blues - in fact they have all been influenced by the great blues artists, but had never considered putting together a band to play just blues. In late 2001, this oversight was rectified and the Black Cat Blues Band was born!

(4.6) Blues Scale
Blues is a very important area of modern music. It is usually considered the forerunner of both jazz and rock, and it breaks many of the conventions of classical music theory.
Blues music has a solid but plaintive sound which results from the use of a minor-based scale over the top of major-based chords (usually dominant sevenths). When we look at relating chords and scales a little later, you will see how unusual this is.
In particular, the Blues scale is a very common choice for melodies and improvisations in blues music.
The Blues scale has only six notes - unlike all the other scales we have seen so far with seven. It is also unusual in that some of its notes are considered blue notes, meaning that they are not played exactly at the pitch you would expect.

Posted August 26, 2005

It's time once again for the yearly gathering of Nashville's Blues & R&B communities for the purpose of raising money for local musicians in need and cancer research. Every year Music City Blues Society participates in this wonderful event to support this very worthy cause. The Musician's Reunion is the brainchild of Nashville's own "Queen of the Blues," Marion James, Blues Singer and founder of The Marion James Musician's Aid Society. Marion launched the first reunion at the Rodeway Inn in 1983. With two European tours under her belt including one with Blues Legend, Gatemouth Brown, a past history that includes a former guitar player in her band by the name of Jimi Hendrix, and local performance appearances going back to the 1960's, Ms James and her Band the Queen's Men are sure to satisfy blues lovers appetites for great music. Better yet, she's invited some very cool friends to join her and share the stage for the evening.
Appearing at the Musician's Reunion this year with "Nashville's Queen of the Blues" will be Jimmy Church, Earl Gaines, M.C. Gorgeous George, former Jimi Hendrix sideman Larry Lee and many others. Tickets are available at the door the night of the show and include a dinner. Dress your best, come early and stay late! It all happens At the Pride of Tennessee Elks Lodge. 2614 Jefferson St. Nashville, Tennessee. Doors open at 5:30pm, September 4th. Tickets are $15 ($13 for all Society members) Tables may also be reserved for $10 by calling 327-0165. Diatonic Harmonica Techniques
This table lists a large variety of techniques that can be used for playing the diatonic harmonica. These are in some order of difficulty, however even simple techniques can require much practice and expertise to master. The harmonica is sometimes called the easiest instrument to play, but the most difficult to master While that is certainly arguable, don't think that becoming an expert on the harmonica is easy or will happen over night, despite what some book titles might lead you to believe... This table should give you an idea about "where you are" in your ability, and what techniques you still need to master. I've included sample Real Audio clips to demonstrate most of these techniques, where it makes sense. Some areas, such as embouchure, should not effect the resulting sound to an appreciable degree. The samples are most all played on a key of A harp.

A Brief History of the Blues
by Robert M. Baker Joseph Machlis says that the blues is a native American musical and verse form, with no direct European and African antecedents of which we know. (p. 578) In other words, it is a blending of both traditions. Something special and entirely different from either of its parent traditions. (Although Alan Lomax cites some examples of very similar songs having been found in Northwest Africa, particularly among the Wolof and Watusi. p. 233) The word 'blue' has been associated with the idea of melancholia or depression since the Elizabethan era. The American writer, Washington Irving is credited with coining the term 'the blues,' as it is now defined, in 1807. (Tanner 40) The earlier (almost entirely Negro) history of the blues musical tradition is traced through oral tradition as far back as the 1860s. (Kennedy 79) When African and European music first began to merge to create what eventually became the blues, the slaves sang songs filled with words telling of their extreme suffering and privation. (Tanner 36) One of the many responses to their oppressive environment resulted in the field holler. The field holler gave rise to the spiritual, and the blues, "notable among all human works of art for their profound despair . . . They gave voice to the mood of alienation and anomie that prevailed in the construction camps of the South," for it was in the Mississippi Delta that blacks were often forcibly conscripted to work on the levee and land-clearing crews, where they were often abused and then tossed aside or worked to death. (Lomax 233)

THE BLUES ™ NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH CAMPAIGN The blues is one of America's greatest musical treasures. A roots music form that evolved out of African-American work songs, field hollers, spirituals, and country string ballads more than a century ago, the blues is the foundation of virtually every major American music form born in the 20th century, including jazz, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and hip hop. As profound as the blues has been to the national music experience, it has only occasionally entered the American classroom, mostly through individual teachers who were committed blues fans and who created their own methods to integrate the music into curricula. The Blues educational outreach campaign, created by Experience Music Project , provides teaching strategies and resources for teachers to assist in the integration of blues music, culture, and history into American classrooms, with emphasis on grades 9-12. Explore The Blues Classroom for more information on the blues as a musical form and for assistance in using The Blues educational materials in your school.

It was, Handy later said, the weirdest music I had ever heard. That strange music was the blues, although few people knew it by that name.

On a lonely night in 1903, W.C. Handy , the African American leader of a dance orchestra, got stuck waiting for a train in the hamlet of Tutwiler, Mississippi. With hours to kill and nowhere else to go, Handy fell asleep on a hard wooden bench at the empty depot. When he awoke, a ragged black man was sitting next to him, singing about "goin' where the Southern cross the Dog" and sliding a knife against the strings of a guitar. The musician repeated the line three times and answered with his instrument. It was, Handy later said, "the weirdest music I had ever heard." That strange music was the blues, although few people knew it by that name. At the turn of the century, the blues was still slowly emerging from Texas, Louisiana, the Piedmont region, and the Mississippi Delta; its roots were in various forms of African American slave songs such as field hollers, work songs, spirituals, and country string ballads. Rural music that captured the suffering, anguish-and hopes-of 300 years of slavery and tenant farming, the blues was typically played by roaming solo musicians on acoustic guitar, piano, or harmonica at weekend parties, picnics, and juke joints. Their audience was primarily made up of agricultural laborers, who danced to the propulsive rhythms, moans, and slide guitar. Mamie Smith , the first black female to record a blues vocal. This unexpected success alerted record labels to the potential profit of "race records," and singers such as

Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane's brief collaborations in 1957 are considered a part of jazz legend, although very few recordings exist of their historic performances. Recently, a mislabeled tape recording was discovered in the vast archives of the Library of Congress and now these jazz icons can be heard together in concert on 'Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall.' You can listen to this delightful piece of jazz history right here. Then then go behind the scenes to see how this lost concert was found and lovingly restored.
Consider the Possibilities
Rarely does an album come along that perfectly blends the sounds of jazz, pop, blues and rock musicians. But when jazz giant Herbie Hancock is at the helm, the results are sublime. Herbie hand-picked some of his favorite performers to join the jam on 'Possiblities.' Listen to the entire album featuring
