    NEW ORLEANS MUSICIANS FUND

Music Maker Relief Foundation has begun this fund as a heartfelt response to aid the New Orleans musicians. Many artists have lost their homes, are living in new cities and are trying to figure out what to do next.
This fund has been set up so these musicians in need can get help. Grants will be made for basic living expenses such as gasoline, food, rent, clothing and instrument replacement. We are sending out care packages of t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts. Our Programs Coordinator will help artists connect with FEMA, the Red Cross, Social Services and MusiCares as well as passport replacement, finding performance opportunities and relocation expenses.
The more money we raise the more artists we can help. We are already assisting established Music Maker recipient artists affected by Katrina and have identified several other artists that can use our help. We have offered to help artists that work with the New Orleans Musicians Clinic to help with obtaining gas and food money. According to Bethany Bultman of the New Orleans Musicians Clinic for the long term they will be focused in rebuilding musician¹s homes that were devastated by Katrina. We are committed to join NOMC in their efforts. If any church or civic group wishes to help rebuild homes of musicians that were devastated by the storm, please contact us.

Minnesota bluesman succumbs to liver cancer
Minneapolis bluesman Percy Strother, 58, died from liver cancer at his home on May 29, 2005, according to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune. The local Twin Cites singer and guitarist was best known for his acclaimed 1992 album, "A Good Woman is Hard to Find," including the title track, which was named best blues song of the year by Living Blues magazine. His other recordings included "Highway is My Home," "It's My Time" and "Home at Last." The native of Vicksburg, Mississippi had a difficult upbringing, including the violent death of his sharecropper father, who was hanged for allegedly killing a white man when Strother was about 9. His mother also died about 5 years later, leading Strother and his five siblings to move around the country to avoid the orphanage. Strother eventually wound up in Minnesota and became a fixture on the Twin Cities blues scene, playing there since the 1970s. Like many other American blues singers, he also developed a following in Europe. "All Percy had to do to be an authentic bluesman was roll out of bed each day," said Curt Obeda of a local band, Butanes.

Artists such as the Five Keys, and later the Coasters and the Drifters, sang songs with lyric themes that voiced concerns of American teenagers, including rebellion, school, romance, and cars. Pioneered largely by guitarist Chuck Berry and pianist Little Richard , black rock and roll emerged during the 1950s and forever changed American culture. The crucial innovation of black rock and roll was in the expression of rhythm. Berry and Little Richard subdivided the basic quarter beat into two eighth notes, rather than following the three-eighth-note, or triplet, shuffle subdivision that had been the hallmark of the earlier rhythm-and-blues styles. With this innovation, an exciting, high-energy groove could be achieved. Both artists also substantially increased the tempo of their performances, giving their music a frantic style that appealed to American teenagers. Finally, both artists wrote songs that reflected the youthful fancies of their audience. Classics such as Little Richard's “Tutti Frutti” (1955) and “Lucille” (1957) and Berry's “Maybellene” (1955) and “Johnny B. Goode” (1958) were
