B.B. King's 80th Birthday
The King of the Blues turned 80 years old last week. Whereas most 80 year-olds are settled back into their golden years, B.B. is still going strong with 250+ performances a year plus countless appearances and interviews. So apparently the secret to a long and fruitful life is hard work and lots of great music.

The Piano and Blues Music
The piano has earned an honored place in the history of the Blues. Though not as popular or convenient as a guitar or harmonica, the piano has carved out a deep tradition in America's music. Why the piano? Why not the trumpet, violin, tuba, or other traditional musical instruments that were available throughout the evolution of the Blues. Let's take a look at history of Blues piano. Bartolommeo Cristofori is credited with inventing the pianoforte in 1709. Evolving from the harpsichord, pianos had several unusual configurations, including extra pedals, vertical strings, multi-keyboard, and different ranges. Todays modern version of the piano became standard in the mid-1800's. By the turn of the 20th century the piano was well entrenched into the musical psyche of America.

Shades of Blue
Next
The Primer is dedicated to promoting Rhythm and Blues, but it's clear to anyone with a passing interest in the music that it really doesn't stick to any clear definition of the genre.
As a Primer, it's an attempt to illustrate the music, the labels and the artists of a particular style but it cannot lay claim to be a theoretical, academic or scholarly treatise. This is primarily because I am ill-equipped to do it well and there are others who are far better qualified to deliver a definitive history of the form. So what you'll find below is an emotional and historically flawed account of the music that the Primer promotes, designed to provide a background and context for what you'll find on the rest of the site. John Lee Hooker Rhythm and Blues was and still is a term used for a number of post-war American popular music forms. The term is credited to Jerry Wexler when he was editing the charts in Billboard magazine (1947). The term was used in the chart listings from 1949 onwards and the charts in question encompassed a number of contemporary forms that emerged around that time.

Speaking of Sonny...
OK, I'll admit that it may be possible that I am not the biggest nerd on the planet, but I think I have finally jumped up another rung on the ladder and become a (shudder) fanboy... Yup, my snazzy offiicial Sonny Rollins t-shirt came in the mail today, fresh from Sonny's own web site . Hey, he's 75 and the Master of the Universe, I think it's OK for him to cash in.
