BLOCK SCHEDULING featuring: ROBERT LYNN CANADY OVERVIEW:
With 15 million children at risk of academic failure, schools must shift their focus from sorting and selecting to teaching and learning. Alternative schedules may not add hours to the school day, but they can vastly improve the quality of time students spend at school. The most critical time allocation issue schools face is the indisputable fact that some students need more time to learn than others, and traditional schedules severely limit the flexibility that is needed to provide additional time on-task for many of our learners. Block schedules, used with increasing frequency across the country, greatly reduce fragmented instruction. Ultimately, we envision students progressing from school to school in a seamless design.

From time to time, Education World reposts a previously published article that we think might be of interest to administrators. Before reposting, we update all links and add new resources to the articles. We hope you find this archived article to be of value… The merits of block scheduling are a subject of great debate. Is it a flexible scheduling alternative that benefits students or is it a fad that's sure to pass? Schools throughout the United States are adopting block scheduling in dramatically increasing numbers. The move to block scheduling, however, has sparked controversy. Hailed by proponents as a vehicle for greater depth and flexibility in education, block scheduling has turned off some educators and parents, who criticize it as a faddish approach that fails to enhance academic performance.

By Karen Irmsher Six classes a day, five days a week, every day the same schedule. Telephones and radios were still novelties when high schools nationwide petrified the school day into this rigid pattern. The refrigerator and television hadn't been invented, much less the copy machine, computer, and video player. We live in a very different world now, and we know immeasurably more about how students learn. Yet most contemporary high school and middle school students are still locked into the same archaic schedule that their great-grandparents experienced when they were teenagers. This Digest looks at problems inherent in the traditional scheduling pattern. Then it examines the benefits and challenges of block scheduling, and ends with a few tips for making the transition. What's Wrong with the Traditional Six- or Seven-Period Day? For starters, say critics, the pace is grueling. A typical student will be in nine locations pursuing nine different activities in a six-and-a-half-hour school day. An average teacher must teach five classes, dealing with 125-180 students and multiple preparations. This frantic, fragmented schedule is unlike any experienced either before or after high school. "It produces a hectic, impersonal, inefficient instructional environment," states Joseph Carroll (1994), provides inadequate time for probing ideas in depth, and tends to discourage using a variety of learning activities. Opportunities for individualization of instruction and meaningful interaction between students and teachers are hard to come by.

Subheading: If You have been avoiding the hot issue of intensive scheduling, you need only peruse this issue to demonstrate how many schools are moving in this direction.
School after school are switching to some modified form of this new method of organizing the school day. You need to be informed of ways to insure music education remains a strong component in your school if or more likely when your district adopts their version of semester scheduling. We are sharing information from various districts who have already implemented some form of block scheduling to help you and to give you some strategies for surviving this drastic change in breaking up the school day. What it is
For most of you, block scheduling will be like death or taxes-inevitable and unavoidable. How your district goes about implementing it and how creative you and your colleagues are in incorporating music will dictate how successful and painless the whole experience will be.
From the administrative side, this method of scheduling is a godsend. Teachers in this system teach the maximum number of classes even if each of those courses is a unique preparation. In a traditional seven period schedule, most teachers teach five classes with one prep period and one lunch period. In the “four by four” each teacher teaches three courses per semester with a prep and lunch. Therefore, each staff member is now effectively teaching six classes. It maximizes staff as painless as possible. But an added benefit is that it adds another potential class and therefore more electives to the student day.

    Block Scheduling: A Teacher's Experience
    by Phillip James
    About the Author
Many questions arise as teachers are confronted with the task of teaching within a block schedule format:
    • Do I need to relearn how to teach to accommodate longer blocks? What is expected of me now that I have been given more time to teach per block? How will I keep students from being bored? Will I be able to cover the same amount of material as I did previously under the new schedule?
Over the past two years the high school where I teach adopted a modified block schedule that had most classes meeting for 75 minutes. My colleagues and I had many questions and much anxiety concerning the change. The history department was divided as to whether the change would actually improve students' learning, and many of us pondered the questions mentioned above. What we discovered is that we all survived. Although the preference of the new schedule over our previous, more traditional one, is still debated, we all managed to teach effectively. Based upon this experience, there are several things you could consider if you are facing a switch to some form of block scheduling.
