Last Updated: June 2001. Motion Induced Blindness (MIB) is a phenomenon of "visual disappearance" in which salient visual stimuli disappear as if erased in front of the observers eyes. This demo demonstrates several properties of this phenomenon. It is implemented as a set of GIF animation and can only be appreciated if the apparent motion appears smooth or almost smooth. In general, fixate in the center or lower part of the screen without moving the eyes, pay attention to the moving pattern and observe what happens to the static yellow dots. For better results, download an executable version of the demo, available for Linux x86 and Windows systems. The demo is best perceived in the dark.

Note that on some systems, the title text in each page might look flickering, but this should not disrupt the effect.

Additionally featured are short stories highlighting the successful adjustment to blindness through the development of a positive attitude and philosophical foundation, to the acquisition of alternative techniques in order to function independently.
Finally, there are links to other sites that also promote a positive approach to blindness and visual impairment.

Color Blindness
What is Color Blindness?
Color Blindness, or Color Vision Deficiency, is an eye condition where a person is not able to distinguish certain colors or shades of colors to some degree. Color Blindness does not mean that a person can only see black and white. A person with color blindness is able to see different colors, however they are not able to see some colors due to deficiencies in the eyes. Color blindness is a hereditary condition but can also be caused by eye diseases, damage to the retina and macula, and aging or when the lens is darkened over time from a cataract. Although there is no absolute treatment for hereditary color blindness, there are methods, techniques, and special glasses that may help people with color blindness differentiate different colors but not truly see them. If you have extreme trouble distinguishing the numbers in one of the pictures below or are not able to see them at all, than you may have some degree of color blindness.
What causes Color Blindness?
The retina contains rods and cones that help us to see objects in different colors and varying degrees of brightness. The cones are photoreceptors that allow us to distinguish between many colors and different shades of these colors as well. The cones contain light sensitive pigments that are particular to range of range of wavelengths. There are three different types of cones with one sensitive to

The eye and a camera have a lot in common. They both have compound lenses. To focus a camera you move the lens backward or forward. The eye is focused by the ciliary muscle witch stretches the lens, changing its shape. The iris, just like the aperture in a camera, controls the amount of light that enters the eye. The aperture in a camera protects the film from over exposure. The iris in the eye protects the sensitive retina from light damage. The retina is like the film in a camera, covering the back of the eye. It contains millions of photoreceptor cells. These cells convert light rays into electrical signals that are sent to the brain through the optic nerve. The signals from both eyes are combined and converted into sight by the brain. Night Blindness
The outer area of the retina is made up of more rods than cones. The rod cells are the cells that enable us to see in poor illumination. This is the reason why loss of side vision often results in night blindness.

The partnership has defeated the disease in large parts of West Africa and is making rapid progress in the remaining endemic countries in West, Central, and Eastern Africa. Before control programs began, tens of millions were infected and hundreds of thousands suffered from the worst symptom: total blindness. In total, 30 countries are infested, ranging from Senegal across to Ethiopia in the north and as far south as Angola and Malawi. With the program's success in West Africa, productive labor has increased; 600,000 cases of blindness have been prevented, and 25 million hectares of formerly evacuated arable lands have been made safe for settlement and agriculture. These lands have the potential to feed an additional 17 million
