Study: New drug combats age-related blindness
Story Tools HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Medical Research or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) - An experimental drug that blocks abnormal blood vessel growth in the eye is an effective treatment for the leading cause of age-related blindness, according to research unveiled Saturday. Macugen, a drug being developed by Pfizer Inc. and Eyetech Pharmaceuticals Inc., was 27 percent more effective than placebo at limiting vision loss in patients with the "wet" form of macular degeneration in a late-stage trial, said Dr. Carmen Puliafito, director of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami and the study's lead investigator. In macular degeneration, the central and most important area of the retina the macula deteriorates. The more common "dry" form results in gradual vision loss. In the more serious, wet form of the disease, vision loss occurs quickly as blood vessels leak and form a mound. The mound later contracts, leaving a scar that blocks vision. This form of macular degeneration afflicts an estimated 1.2 million Americans and the incidence is expected to rise as baby boomers age.

, but it affects only .4 percent of women. The fact that color blindness is so much more prevalent among men implies that, like hemophilia, it is carried on the X chromosome, of which men have only one copy. (As in hemophilia, women are protected because they have two X chromosomes; a normal gene on one chromosome can often make up for a defective gene on the other.) Nathans himself is not color-blind. Before using his own DNA, he thoroughly tested his color vision to ensure that it was normal. Nevertheless, one of his initial findings presented a puzzle: Lying head to tail along his X chromosome were not just the two genes for the red and green receptors, but also an extra copy of the green receptor gene. Here was the explanation for the prevalence of color blindness, he realized. Because the DNA sequences of the red and green receptor genes are so similar, and because they lie head to tail, it is easy for mistakes to occur during the development of egg and sperm, as genetic material is replicated and exchanged between chromosomes.

NCBDDD Home Vision Impairment What Is Vision Impairment? How Common Is It? ... Click here to contact the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities. What is vision impairment? Vision impairment means that a person's eyesight cannot be corrected to a "normal" level. Vision impairment may be caused by a loss of visual acuity, where the eye does not see objects as clearly as usual. It may also be caused by a loss of visual field, where the eye cannot see as wide an area as usual without moving the eyes or turning the head. There are different ways of describing how severe a person's vision loss is. The World Health Organization defines "low vision" as visual acuity between 20/70 and 20/400, with the best possible correction, or a visual field of 20 degrees or less. "Blindness" is defined as a visual acuity worse than 20/400, with the best possible correction, or a visual field of 10 degrees or less. Someone with a visual acuity of 20/70 can see at 20 feet what someone with normal sight can see at 70 feet. Someone with a visual acuity of 20/400 can see at 20 feet what someone with normal sight can see at 400 feet. A normal visual field is about 160-170 degrees horizontally. Vision impairment severity may be categorized differently for certain purposes. In the United States, for example, we use the term "legal blindness" to indicate that a person is eligible for certain education or federal programs. Legal blindness is defined as a visual acuity of 20/200 or worse, with the best possible correction, or a visual field of 20 degrees or less.

Scientists say they may have made a major breakthrough in the battle against river blindness, a disease affecting 17 million people. Antibiotics could provide a cheap, safe and effective way of wiping out the disease, which is caused by a parasitic worm. Scientists from the United Kingdom, Cameroon and Germany, say their experiments show that using antibiotics to kill bacteria living on the parasite, also kills the parasite itself.
This is an important step in finding a cheap, safe and effective way of curing the infection
Professor Alexander Trees, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine River blindness, or Onchocerciasis, causes severe itching, disfiguring lesions and lesions of the eye that can cause blindness. It is most prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, though the World Health Organisation says it will have stamped out the disease in West Africa by 2002.

    Color Blindness Problem Set
This problem set is based on a question received from a woman named Audrei. Audrei is red-green color blind and so are other members of her family. She wanted to know if we could help her understand how she inherited her color blindness. Audrei's family There are 7 children in Audrei's family, three girls and four boys. Two of the girls, Audrei and Liz, are red-green color blind. Caroline has normal color vision. Only two of the boys have been tested. Paul is color blind and David has normal color perception. Andrew and Jason, who have not been tested, may or may not have normal color perception. Barbara, the mother of the seven children, has normal color vision, but Sidney, the father, has the red-green color perception defect. Audrei also has a half brother Stephan. Audrei and Stephen have the same mother, but a different father. Stephan is also red green color blind. Red-green color blindness Red-green color blindness is an X-linked, recessive trait. In this problem set we will establish the pedigree of Audrei's family and see how the color perception defect is passed on from one generation to the next, but first let's look at a brief introduction to sex-linked inheritance. For more complete information about sex-linked inheritance review the Sex-linked Inheritance Problem Set in the Mendelian Genetics section.

FCGCF provides diagnostic screenings opportunities for high risk glaucoma population groups in their home districts across the nation.
In support of the 81 members and former members of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucus, FCGCF arranges and provides screenings for glaucoma and other eye diseases throughout the United States at no cost to screening participants. From April 2001 to September 2004 we have screened approximately 36,000 individuals and have held over 1400 screenings nationwide. Of those screened, approximately 33% were referred for further vision related medical treatment, and of those referred, 15% displayed signs consistent with glaucoma. It is well known that for the vast majority of individuals with glaucoma, the chances of preserving their sight is significantly improved if diagnosed and treated early enough. FCGCF targets groups of people at high risk of developing glaucoma or other eye disease, such as African Americans and Hispanics over the age of 40. We also target geographic areas, where adequate eye care is unavailable. FCGCF utilizes mobile facilities, complete with the most up-to-date screening equipment, so that we can travel to high risk areas.

    Introduction
People who are deaf-blind have problems of communication, mobility and other daily living skills that are unique and make independent living more dificult to achieve. It can be a dark, silent and isolating world. The term "deaf-blind" doesn't necessarily mean total lack of hearing and vision. Some people who are deaf-blind are partially "hearing and visually impaired." They may have enough hearing to understand speech, especially when using a hearing aid, and may have some usable vision with or without corrective lenses. "Legal blindness" is defined as the ability to see at a distance of 20 feet what a normally sighted person can see at 200 feet , or to have peripheral vision that is restricted to 20 degrees or less (like tunnel vision). However deaf-blindness does mean that the combination of impairments of both senses interferes with the ability of a person to function effectively in the "hearing-sighted" world.
