Symptoms of envenomation include severe skeletal muscle pain and cramping, diaphoresis and hypertension. Clark and associates studied the efficacy and side effects of treatment alternatives for black widow spider envenomation. The hospital charts of 163 patients with black widow spider envenomation were retrospectively reviewed. Identification of the spider or a visible envenomation site ("target lesion") was required for inclusion of cases in the study. Patients were categorized according to the severity of envenomation.

The toxin from a black widow is extremely strong; however, the amount injected from a single bite is small. They are dangerous spiders in that the bite delivered can be fatal, but the fear of these spiders is overdone. Each year, the number of deaths from these creatures in N. America can be counted on one hand (several hundred people are actually bitten). This compares with the tens of thousands of people who die each year in car accidents.
