Black Widow Spiders
The Black Widow spider ( Latrodectus ) is represented by five species in North America north of Mexico. Two of these species, the brown widow ( L. geostricus ) and the red-legged or red widow ( L. bishopi ), are restricted to a southern distribution. The red widow appears to be found only in southern Florida. The remaining black widow species were historically considered to be only one species but are now recognized as three distinct species . Identification is based upon the pattern of red coloration on the underside of their abdomen and by their geographical distribution, although the northern and southern black widows may coexist in some states. The Venom
Although almost all spider species possess poison only a few species produce a venom virulent to be harmful to humans. Black widows are very timid spiders and are not known to agressively bite humans. However, the venom of black widows is a neurotoxin and it may interfere with the nerve impulses to muscle tissue. After being biten from a black widow one may feel painful rigidity in the muscles of the abdomen and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Other symptoms include an increase in blood pressure, a rise in body temperature, nausea, and sweating. Death is uncommon (less than 1% of the reported cases), but in the elderly or very young death may occur from asphyxia 14-32 hours after being bitten. Seek medical attention if you suspect you have been bitten. Without medical attention the symptoms can last 5 days and a complete recovery may take weeks.

Black Widow Spider Bite
Black Widow Spider Bite Overview
Spiders are often blamed for all kinds of symptoms, from local itching to diffuse rashes. The fact is that spiders rarely bite humans, and in fact, most spider bites do not even break the skin with their bites. The bites of very large spiders such as tarantulas can be painful. Otherwise, in the temperate regions, the only spiders to be feared are the black widow and the brown recluse.
  • The black widow is a medium-sized spider whose body is about a half-inch long. The name is derived from the mistaken belief that the female invariably kills the male after mating. Two species are common to the United States.
    • The southern black widow has the shiny, black, globular abdomen with the distinctive red hourglass on the underside.
The northern black widow has a row of red spots down the middle of the upper surface of its abdomen and 2 crosswise bars on the undersurface. Just to make things interesting, the markings can also be yellow or white, and the spider itself may be brown or have red legs.

Black widow spiders are nocturnal and, thus, are active at night. They prefer dark corners or crevices. They are said to avoid human dwellings, but you can find them in such areas as outhouses and garages. Only the female black widow bites humans, and she bites only when disturbed.

    Scientific Name: Latrodectus mactans Fabricius
Order: Araneae Description: There are more than 25 Latrodectus species world wide. Contrary to common belief, the female does not consume the male in most situations, except when held together in cages from which the male cannot escape. Examination of the genitalia is the proper way to identify species in this group. The species in Texas can be separated to some degree by the shape of the red markings on the abdomen and the location. The western black widow, Latrodectus hesperus L. hesperus have been found in which the adults retain their brilliant immature colors. Further west, the coloration of the species appears to grade back to black. The northern black widow Latrodectus variolus Walckenaer, usually has the hourglass divided, typically with red spots on the dorsum and white lines on the sides. This species occurs throughout much of the eastern half of the U.S.

Black Widow Spider Scientific name: Latrodectus mactans (Fabricius)
(Araneae: Theridiidae) Facts: Black widow spiders are shy and secretive and found in seldom-disturbed areas. The mature female has a characteristic hourglass-shaped, reddish orange marking on the underside of the abdomen. Black widow spiders are predaceous, devouring small arthropods trapped in their webs. Their bite is relatively painless at first, but may be followed in about an hour by intense pain and swelling. The venom causes nausea, cramps, lack of coordination, and difficulty breathing by interference in nervous functions. Death has occurred in individuals hypersensitive to the venom.

  • Within the United States, the black widow spider is essentially a southern species. It ranges as far north as Massachusetts and New Hampshire, as far south as Florida, and as far west as California, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. The black widow spider also occurs throughout all four deserts of the American southwest.
  • The black widow is also found in Canada, Mexico, the West Indies and South America.
II. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Mass: 1 g, on average.
  • The black widow spider is shiny, coal black in color.
  • The female is 8-10 mm in length and has long, slender legs and a round abdomen. On the underside of the female's abdomen there is usually a red hourglass mark and one or two red spots over the spinnerets and along the middle of her back.
  • The male is 3-4 mm long with an elongated abdomen. The male's legs are larger than the female's and each joint is orange brown in the middle and black on the ends. On the sides of the male's abdomen there are four pairs of red and white stripes.
  • Young spiderlings, or juveniles, are orange, brown and white; they acquire their black coloring with age, or with each molt.

The black widow spider Latrodectus mactans ) is notorious for its neurotoxic venom . It is a large widow spider found throughout the world and commonly associated with urban habitats or agricultural areas. Although the common name 'black widow spider' is used to refer specifically to L. mactans it is occasionally also applied to several members of the Latrodectus (widow spider) genus in which there are 31 recognised species including the Australian red-back and brown widow spider . In South Africa the black widow is known as the button spider Adult black widow spiders are shiny black with an hourglass shape marking on the bottom of its abdomen which, although most commonly red, may range in color from white to yellow to various shades of orange and red. In some varieties, the two halves of the hourglass shape may be separated into two separate dots. Female black widow spiders are about 1.5 inches (38 mm) counting legspan. The body is about 0.5 inches (13 mm). Male black widow spiders are half the size of the female, but with longer legs.

Black widow spider
Scientific name: Latrodectus mactans Country: United States Continent: North America Diet: Insects - insectivore, small reptiles, small mammals Carnivore Habitats: Conservation status: Not Threatened Relatives: Red-back spider Description: The black widow spider gets its name from the popular belief that the females eat the males after mating. In fact, this is a phenomenon which rarely occurs in nature. The males' venom sacs cease to develop at an early age, as they do not feed during adulthood and instead spend their time searching for mates. The females, on the other hand, are one of the most venomous spiders, although their bites are not usually fatal for humans because they inject only a small amount of venom. Females are easily recognised by their shiny black body with a red hourglass marking on the underside of the spherical abdomen. Their bodies are about 8-10 mm long. The males are half the size of the females, with smaller bodies and longer legs. They usually have markings on their backs, as do the immature stages. Lifestyle: Black widows are found on the underside to ledges, rocks, plants and debris, including dustbins and outside toilets! They use silk to weave tangled-looking webs, usually near the ground or in dark places. The tips of their legs are non-stick, which prevents them from becoming trapped in their own webs.

Habitat
A terrestrial environment is the habitat of the Latrodectus mactans . It is ubiquitous and builds strong-walled retreats quite close to the ground and in dark sheltered spots. However, it also spreads its snares over plants. Webs of the black widow spider can be found in recesses under stones or logs in a woodpile, in crevices or holes in dirt embankments, in barns and outbuildings. They can also be found around lids of dust bins, around seats of outdoor privies, spaces under chips of wood, around stacked materials of any kind, in deserted animal burrows or rodent holes, and entwined in grape arbors. This spider may find its way into clothing or shoes and occasionally seeks a spot in a house to build a web, but it is usually not found indoors. When it does seek shelter in a building, it is due to cold weather and a need for a dry shelter. In addition, in the eastern United States

It has caused only 55 human deaths during a 217 year period. Black widow spiders are found throughout the warm parts of the world. The most familiar species are in North America. They are known for their powerful venom, which is deadly to prey but rarely fatal to humans. In other countries, black widows may be known by different names, such as hourglass, redback, jockey, or button spider. Habits: The black widow spider lives in various types of wild habitat and cultivated farmland, but it is best known for populating human residences. It likes dark, secluded places, such as in cellars and sheds and underneath houses. This spider spins its messy web beneath floorboards or in piles of rubbish and wood. The black widow is a shy, solitary creature and will attack humans only when surprised or threatened. Its venom is called a neurotoxin – it attacks the nervous system, causes severe pain and muscle cramps, and makes breathing difficult. These symptoms, although unpleasant to humans, are rarely fatal. The front part of the black widow’s body, called the cephalothorax, houses poison glands. Venom passes through ducts to the spider’s fangs, known as chelicerae. The black widow stabs its prey with its fangs to inject the venom, though its mouth is really adapted for sucking. Markings occur below or on top of the abdomen, depending on the species.

Black widow bites are most dangerous to small children and the elderly. These bites will also make adults pretty sick. Steps: Learn to recognize female black widow spiders, whose bites are venomous. They are usually coal black and have a reddish hourglass shape on their bellies. Exercise caution when stepping or reaching into places where black widow webs are likely to be: in cool dark places such as underneath rocks or logs, or inside caves, unoccupied structures or outdoor latrines. Look for the signs and symptoms of a black widow bite: redness at the site of the bite; muscle cramps originating at the bite and spreading throughout the body; pain and cramping in the back and abdomen; nausea, vomiting, perspiration, dizziness; changes in levels of consciousness (See "How to Measure Level of Consciousness"). Clean bite area with soap and water and elevate to at least level of the heart.

A 'LOST WORLD' BATTLE: sun scorpion caught in the web of a black widow spider (all photos by Dan Johnson, 2004) The region near Lost River, Alberta, Canada, is a semi-arid grassland that allows survival of various arachnids, including sun scorpions and the northern scorpion. Black widow spiders (Latrodectus mactans) are commonly found in small mammal burrows, and between pieces of eroded sandstone and shale. The web of the black widow spider below was found at the top of this hill. The female black widow spiders tends two egg sacs in a rock fissure at the top of the peak. Black widow spider webs are typically messy, and may at first appear abandoned. The female spider reacts to the threat of a visitor by aggressive movement, and holding web threads with each foot in order to detect movement. In the background, a recently killed prey item is visible: a sun scorpion, genus Eremobates The dead sun scorpion hangs in the web next to the black widow spider egg sacs. Sun scorpions are also called wind scorpions, camel spiders, solifugids, solfugids, or solpugids; these are members of the Order Solifugae, Family Eremobatidae. Was this prey item cached so as to be near the egg sacs when the spiderlings hatched, or was the cadaver merely retained near the egg sacs while the adult spider fed?

In fact, most spiders do not have mouthparts strong enough to penetrate skin. Spiders are considered beneficial arthropods because they often prey on insects that we consider nuisances. Therefore, homeowners should be encouraged to leave spiders alone if the spiders are in their natural habitats, such as gardens or yards. However, the black widow spider ( Latrodectus mactans ) is an exception.

By the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 3, 2003 - A tropical "Brown Widow" spider, new to the Los Angeles area, has been captured as part of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County’s ongoing Spider Survey. The live, venomous spider, along with its egg sac containing up to 100 baby spiders, is currently on public display in the Museum’s Insect Zoo.
Brian Brown, associate curator of entomology, said this spider has not been found previously in the Los Angeles area. "The Brown Widow probably originated in Africa, but has been introduced into the tropics almost worldwide," he said. According to Brown, one of the many ways the spider could have made it to the Southland was through commercial imports of plants, flowers, food or furniture.
The Brown Widow is so rare to the Los Angeles area that this is the first one out of 3,000 spiders so far to be collected as part of the Museum’s Spider Survey. The survey began last Spring to discover which types of spiders are found in the greater Los Angeles basin. "This is the most unusual specimen we’ve found through the survey so far," Brown said.

The danger of spider bites:
Most spiders found in the United States are harmless, with the exception of the black widow and the brown recluse spiders (sometimes called the violin spider). Both of these spiders are found in warm climates. What is a brown recluse spider?
The brown recluse spider, or violin spider, is about 1 inch long and has a violin shaped mark on its upper back. It is often found in warm, dry climates and prefers to stay in undisturbed areas such as basements, closets, and attics. It is not an aggressive spider, but will attack if trapped or held against the skin. One death in December, 2001 has been reported in the United States from a brown recluse bite. What are the symptoms of a brown recluse spider bite?
Venom from the brown recluse spider usually causes local tissue damage. The following are the most common symptoms of a bite from a brown recluse spider bite. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

Hi Kerry,
Though your photo doesn't actually show mating activity, we still felt it appropriate for our Love Among the Bugs page. The Black Widow has earned her name because of her reputation for devouring her mate. The tiny male in the upper corner of your photo is biding his time, living in close proximity and waiting to make his move. The male is a much smaller spider. When the time is right, he will move in and if the fates allow, consumate the pairing. Once years ago, I watched a male widow snare his mate by spinning a web around her. This probably kept her still while he did the deed, hopefully allowing him to skulk off into the night afterwards.
