We could do a search for "fourth grade black history month" and get a bunch of lessons that had a "printable version."
OK. So my lesson to share... I am starting black history month in January since February is so short and one of the weeks is a vacation. We talked about early permissable music of slaves. We talked about how slaves in the US were not allowed to drum because the slave owners correctly thought that they could communicate messages through the drums. Slaves were allowed to sing though, and the discussion lead into work songs, chain gang songs, and quiet songs. (Next week we will look at spirituals.) For the work song, I sang "Gray Goose" where the class responded with "lord lord lord." Then we listened to the field recording of Leadbelly (I think) singing it. We then listened to Long john, which is a chain gang song, and pretended to work on the chain gang while singing the responses. We then listened to Nobody Knows the Trouble I've seen, as the quiet song.
: Are any of you interested in having a lesson plan swap? Sometimes I get stuck for ideas, and sometimes the big light bulb over my head shines brightly. I would welcome any of you to post or e-mail your favorite lessons. This forum could be a wonderful resource to get rid of the winter dulldrums.

Home Resume About Me Lesson Plans ... Reflective Paper Lesson Plans Lesson Plan #1 Title: Why did African-Americans have to fight for their rights? Content : Ruby Bridges was born in Mississippi. She grew up in a very poor family. At the age of four Ruby and her family moved to New Orleans. When Ruby was old enough to attend school the judge ordered Ruby to go to the Frantz Elementary School for whites only. Ruby was the first black child to walk into Frantz Elementary School to attend the first grade. Ruby was able to be the first black child to attend a white school because she was strong and she had courage. One day when Ruby was walking into school she stopped and said a prayer. Ruby was an extraordinary little girl who practiced what she believed in by praying. This turned into a daily routine for Ruby. Ruby was escorted into school every day by the federal marshals. There were local police but they did not enforce the law so that is why the federal marshals had to come in. Angry mobs would be along the sides as Ruby would walk into school. Ruby was taught by a white teacher, Mrs. Henry from Boston. No local teachers would teach Ruby because they were scared that something might happen to them or their families. Grade Level and Curriculum: nd grade-People in rural, urban, and suburban communities develop rules and laws to govern and protect community members. Roles of leaders in our nation’s history, past and present.
