MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY (Jan)
Celebrating your birthday is certainly not a new idea. In ancient Rome, birthdays were celebrated as festivals! Today, in the United States, we celebrate our own birthday with family and friends, and celebrate some of our national heroes birthdays with a great deal of fanfare and excitement. One such hero is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For Everyone!

PRESIDENTS DAY The ancient Greeks loved heroes! The word "hero" comes from the Greeks. In the United States, we honor several of our heroes in February, including George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, two of our former U.S. presidents, on Presidents' Day

    LESSON PLANS
    Prepared by Kevin White
Howard Career Center The following lesson plans were developed for the Delaware Black History Project. These lesson plans are separated to coincide with each unit. They are, by no means, exhaustive. Because each individual who teaches these units has his or her own instructional methods, these lesson plans are to be used as a guide for the instructor. Each plan shares certain commonalities. Students should begin each unit by reading the material prepared by the authors. This serves as an introduction to the topic for the students. Furthermore, students are asked to define key terms and concepts. They are directed to primary source material. They are encouraged to analyze applicable charts, graphs, and maps. Lastly, critical thinking questions are included, along with research topics to be developed. The critical thinking questions are designed to measure the student's mastery of the topic. Although there is no day-to-day format for the implementation of these lesson plans, the various resources and activities presented are conducive to the development of two to three 45-minute class periods. World Religions Lesson Plans Please note that with regard to lesson plans dealing with anthropology, archaeology, indigenous people, ancient civilizations, history, etc, there may be some cross-over and blurring of lines between the topics. For example, a lesson plan dealing with archaeology is automatically dealing with an anthropological subject. A lesson plan dealing with indigenous people is also automatically dealing with anthropology and any of them may, or may not, be dealing with history or ancient civilizations. While every attempt will be made to keep the topic lines as 'clean' as possible, be aware this may not always be possible. Appropriate grade or age levels are included with the lesson plans. The number of lesson plans available online for this topic are too numerous for a single list. The following provides some idea of what is available and will hopefully be a good starting point. There are times when the large text link doesn't "take" for some reason, thus the built-in redundancy. Thank you.

February is Black History Month and teachers in all schools are given the opportunity to enhance the understanding of the role of African Americans in helping to build America. The rich cultural heritage of black Americans combines strands from all of the paths that led to today's tapestry of music, art and liteature coming from the black community. Jazz, blues, hip hop and house music all have their roots in the history of people of color in the United States. African and Caribbean influences flavor not only the art we enjoy, but add to the foods we set on our tables. Learning more about the roots of black history adds to the understanding of all history. These resources offer good ideas to help make black history live in your classroom... America is woven of many strands.
