Teachers Explore Philadelphia The Dayton and Miami Valley Teaching American History grants sponsored nine teachers under the direction of Dr. Julieanne Phillips, Dayton TAH Coordinator, to travel to historic sites in the Philadelphia area. Teachers followed in George Washington's footsteps at Valley Forge, spoke with "Thomas Jefferson" at the City Tavern in Philadelphia about the new document he was writing to declare the colonies' independence from Great Britain, and toured the Amish countryside of Lancaster, PA in a horse drawn carriage. They will write lesson plans based on their experience incorporating primary source documents, the Ohio Academic Content Standards, and the National History Day theme. In the photograph, left to right: Lillian Drakeford, Co-Instructor; Flo Tigner, Rebecca Bernard, Wes Rodenberg, Jennifer Howard, MaeLynn Freeman, Magdalene Brinkman, Walt Petroski, and Donna McElrath.
Third Annual Spring Fling in Dayton The Teaching American History Project held its third annual Spring Fling on April 28th at the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Park Wright Cycle Complex. The Fling features new and engaging resources and approaches to teaching American history. Teachers learned "Revolution," a multiplayer role-playing game set during the American War for Independence, received standards-aligned curriculum and information for field trips, and toured the museum.

A new movement, led by mothers and fathers, scholars and laypersons, Blacks and Whites, is giving fresh impetus to the continuing effort to tell the story of the struggles, triumphs and contributions of African-Americans. The new movement is based, in part, on the ancient African and African-American notion that obligated every mother, father and elder to pass the tradition on to at least one other person. Like the ancient tradition, the revived tradition speaks to all Americans, not only about race but also about freedom, culture and a common heritage.

from Word Book Site Black History Month Black History Month is an annual observance, in February, of the past achievements and current status of African Americans. It coincides with the birthdays of the great black leader Frederick Douglass (February 14) and of Abraham Lincoln (February 12). The idea for an observance honoring the accomplishments of African Americans led to the establishment of Negro History Week in 1926. It was proposed by Carter G. Woodson , a black historian known as the Father of Black History, and others. The observance became known as Black History Week during the early 1970's and was established as Black History Month in 1976. Origins of Black History Month - brief background on the beginnings of this celebration. Includes lists of related people, books, poems, and activities. For Teachers Restoring the Lost Pages:

"Today, educators have the world's greatest libraries at their fingertips. We at ALFY.com are helping to simplify the information overload, by the compiling the best resources on the web into neat, easy-to-use themes." This week's topic is: BLACK HISTORY MONTH
In 1915, historian Carter G. Woodson proposed a "Negro History Week" to honor the history and contributions of African-Americans. Nine years later, his dream became reality. Woodson chose the second week of February to pay tribute to the birthdays of two Americans that dramatically affected the lives of Blacks: Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and Frederick Douglass (February 14). The week-long observance officially became Black History Month in 1976.
