Black History Month - October 2005 During Black History Month in October 2005, we're presenting a range of fun events for schools and families, and a debate especially for adults, to celebrate the contribution to science and technology made by black scientists and inventors.
Our events take health as their core theme, to coincide with some newly updated displays in The Science and Art of Medicine gallery, and to celebrate the long medical traditions and contribution to health from black scientists and practitioners.
Here are some of the events taking place at the Museum. Details are still to be finalised for some of them so please bookmark this page and visit again.

"It was the best school trip and the best time ever!"
A visit to the Science Museum is a great way to enthuse pupils and provides learning opportunities across a number of curriculum areas, not just Science. We also have a range of classroom resources that you can use with or without a visit.
How do I plan and book my class visit?
Top tips
Try to make a planning visit prior to bringing pupils. This will help you decide what areas to visit, and plan your routes around the Museum etc.
Structure your time in the Museum to include a variety of experiences that change the pace and tone of the day, and keep pupils motivated and inspired.
Mix and match from the activities on this page. We suggest you include one or two object-rich galleries, a hands-on area, one of our fantastic events and/or film in the IMAX Cinema, a Science Show and/or an encounter with a drama character.
Prepare pupils through pre-visit activities that introduce topics, themes, vocab. or skills that pupils will be using in the Museum.
Follow up your visit with related classroom activities to consolidate ideas and experiences from the Museum.

To Guide Entry
I am a special education teacher at East Rock Global Magnet School. I teach in a fifth grade inclusion classroom. The curriculum is adapted to meet the academic needs required for special needs students. Literacy is the major focus in our school system. Literacy addresses reading, writing and speaking. In my unit the choices of literature will reflect the past and present issues in African American History. The children will read and discuss in creative ways what the author is trying to convey to the audience. Literacy is vital to a child's growth. It opens up a whole new world when they're able to read and be able to understand what they've read. I will center my literature on the Underground Railroad, Civil Rights Era, and the book entitled, Through My Eyes by Ruby Bridges There are discrepancies and a lack of factual information in regard to African American History. I will choose two or three movies, and let the children go beyond what was presented during these movies through reading additional literature and researching various topics presented. In order to better interpret the movie and gain a better understanding of race and ethnicity, my students will compare and contrast the information presented in the movie(s) versus non-fictional literature.
