Even the well-informed often find that they were not prepared for the instinctive behaviors birds possess, such as screaming, biting, and chewing furniture. This is also the reasons that a large percentage of birds are abused and neglected. Millions of birds enter the pet trade annually but only a small percentage survive the shipping process from breeder to retailer. If you are considering a bird as a new pet, please adopt. Our Fine Feathered Friends The pet bird population in the U.S. now exceeds 12 million and continues to grow each year. Many books and articles promote the virtues of birds being relatively maintenance free pet. Granted, a pair of zebra finches (my favorites - I'm going to get a pair once I can cat-proof an area) may not require as much time and energy that a dog might, but the maintenance that is required for keeping your bird a happypet must not be overlooked. Some birds, such a Parrots and Cockatoos require a regular time commitment to satisfy their emotional needs. Failure to do so can result in emotional distress leading to behavioral problems, and possibly, disease. You might laugh at the prospect of a bird having emotional problems, but believe me you do not want to be the target of your angry parrot's aggression. Imagine a two-year-old child throwing a temper tantrum - for 12 hours!

Animal-World is about responsible pet ownership, but more than that it is about preserving and honoring the environment and its inhabitants, which give us our livelihoods and our very life blood. Some of the animals presented here have been domesticated for centuries, while others have only been named in recent years past. Many animals, especially in the coral reefs and oceans of the world are yet to be discovered and named. Marine biology, by many accounts, is in its' infancy with a mere 50 years or so of scuba gear available to scientists who are now able to observe fish directly in their natural environments.

The Sussex County Exotic Bird Club is dedicated to the Education of our members on the care of Companion Parrots and other types of Exotic Birds. This goal is accomplished through speakers at our monthly meetings and the sharing of information among our members. Our members range from the hobbyist with one bird to the breeder and the novice to the expert. We have members who have joined the club in an effort to learn all they could before acquiring their first bird. This is a very responsible way to get involved in aviculture. The club puts out an informative monthly newsletter which contains articles by our members as well as other aviculturists from around the world. We are active members in the American Federation of Aviculture, The World Parrot Trust, Bird Clubs of America, Rare and of course Bird Clubs of New Jersey. The public is welcome to attend a meeting as our guest prior to making the commitment of joining our organization. The club was founded in 1991 by Lisa A. Bocchiaro and Leslie Nelle. The reason for the formation of the club was due to the need for people with Exotic Birds to be able to meet and share their knowledge and experiences. Since the formation of the club we have grown to approximately 70 members from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

    Care of Birds
This care sheets contains basic information for the care of birds. Please consult more detailed sources for additional information books, websites or your veterinarian. Pet birds usually belong to one of two avian families: Psittacines or Passerines. Psittacines are the most common type of pet bird and are characterized by having a sturdy curved beak. Examples of this group include budgies, cockatiels and parrots. Psittacines can become very tame and many are good talkers, however, their care requirement far exceed Passerines and there are humane and environmental issues associated with parrots captured in the wild. (See article " So You Want To Get a Parrot. ") Passerine birds are usually small and have straight, short pointed beaks; examples include canaries and finches. Many Passerine birds sing or chirp attractively. They do not talk, they are bred in captivity and have moderate care requirements.
    Housing
Bird cages are preferably made of wire (not bamboo) and with no sharp protruding objects. Cages should not be soldered with lead-based solder as lead is toxic if ingested. Cages should be as large as you have room for. Preferably they should be wide enough for the birds to move freely to different perch levels. Tall narrow cages are not recommended because birds tend to move laterally and not vertically. Your cage should be large enough for your bird to express its natural inclinations to move around, to flap its wings and to preen without touching the sides of the cage.

Handfed birds are wonderful pets. As with any pet they require love, guidance, structure, and lots of patience. As pet owners we are responsible for the care and welfare of our pets. This includes health care, housing and nutrition. The purchase of a pet bird should not be an impulse buy, but should be a well thought out decision as to the type of bird that will best fit into your home environment.
We can provide you with a wonderfully socialized pet bird.
We strive to provide a quality hand raised and healthy baby.  We encourage visitation, if possible, during the handfeeding process, as we feel this will help your baby during the transition period into your home.
