Birds of Prey at Londolozi Maxine Scott was the inaugural winner of the prize for the best field project in CC Africa's Ecological Journal . Here we present a shortened version of her work (adapted by Chris Roche) that appeared in the first edition of this unique publication. This is the first in a series highlighting field projects conducted by rangers at the various CC Africa lodges across southern and east Africa. Environmental indicators
Birds of prey, as the top of the food chain and being sensitive to changes in environment, which affect prey availability, serve as good indicators of the health of a particular ecosystem. A four-year study of birds of prey, or raptors, was conducted by Rob Simmons in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, of which Londolozi is a part. The study determined the density and diversity of raptors within the reserve to be very high. Simmons' study was conducted over the period 1988-1992 with this in mind. In an attempt to investigate any change in raptor diversity and densities and therefore a potential change in ecosystem health, I set out to document and monitor the situation at Londolozi in 1998.

Hours: 10-4 Tuesday- Sunday Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is an urban environmental nature center that specializes in the rescue, medical care, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured and orphaned raptors (birds of prey). More than 40 percent of over 700 annual patients are returned to the wild. Some 20 different species of raptors, which cannot be returned to the wild due to injuries, are used in our conservation education programs. Audubon Center for Birds of Prey is a non-profit organization and relies on visitor admissions, donations and adoptions to support its work. Through action-based education about the environment, citizens will be empowered to preserve what remains of natural Florida as well as saving the birds themselves, which has been Audubon's focus since its beginning in the 1900's.
Over twenty years ago, the arrival of an injured Red-tailed Hawk at the Audubon Society state headquarters, then in Maitland, marked the beginning of an ambitious effort to preserve birds of prey that has changed Florida's skies forever!

Bodio is more successful in conveying the emotional content of falconry than any other author I have read, not even excepting T. H. White in "The Goshawk". He has far exceeded White in the breadth and scope of his experience and, I think, matches him in style and quality of writing. Anyone who wants to understand why falconry has managed to endure for four millennia can at least glimpse the reason by reading this book.' F. L. Who is Greg Florant?
Using Animals That Hibernate to Study Why People Get Fat
Greg Florant was born in New York City, NY. However, at the age of 6 his family moved to Palo Alto, California. Living in California let him spend most of his free-time watching birds and mammals in the foothills. He also spent a lot of time fishing. Greg was always amazed by animals and wanted to know how they managed to live in their different environments. When he was 14, Greg had the chance to work at the Palo Alto Jr. Museum. His job was to take care of the birds of prey (like eagles, hawks, falcons). Studying birds of prey became a hobby of his. Greg also became a falconer (trainer of falcons) and practiced falconry for a while. While working at the museum, he was able to study many different kinds of animals. That’s how he became interested in science. Getting His Feet Wet in Science
Greg chose to study science because it was a subject area that was based on facts. That meant people couldn’t question your answers. And it was more fun than math. Greg also enjoyed doing experiments and testing his ideas. He had excellent science teachers throughout high school who encouraged him. Greg always knew he would go on to college. He was even president of the Future Teacher’s Club in his high school.

    http://www.nbpc.co.uk/control.htm
Control of Various Problem Wildlife Using Birds of Prey This is a general document written to send to the countless people who phone us re advice over the control of 'pest species' it is not written as a definitive statement, is subject to change and because of the wide nature of the enquiries we have it is broadly written. Over the years we have been contacted by countless individuals, businesses, councils, farmers, vineyards, fruit growers and the Forces, to discuss the problems and merits of using raptors (birds of prey), to scare away wild birds and occasionally mammals. Several things have to be understood before even contemplating this method of wildlife control. Raptors and their quarry live naturally side by side in the wild. Contrary to popular belief, if a pair of wild raptors moves into an area, the wildlife does not move out. If they did, then wherever raptors live and hunt there would be no quarry. Wild birds and mammals treat raptors in the same way humans treat traffic - they don't stand in the way. You only have to see a wildlife programme with lions in hunting mode, to notice how herds of prey victims (zebra and the like) watch lions kill members of their own herds and then return to feeding in minutes. Here at The National Birds of Prey Centre we fly between twenty to forty raptors per day throughout the year, many of which will hunt given the option. The species vary to include eagles, hawks, buzzards, falcons, owls and many others. Yet we have more wildlife on our land than other local land owners. Pigeons, Magpies, Starlings, Sparrows, Rabbits and numerous other species breed on our twelve acres every year. Gulls fly over daily, and will often mob our birds, as will crows if they nest on our land, the only reason crows don't nest here is that we shoot them. We also have two fruit farms over which our birds fly and hunt regularly and this has no effect on the small birds eating the fruit or the rabbits barking the trees.

If you don't find the answer to your question below then we can advise people within reason, however to help us, please don't send faxes - it uses up our paper and does not help our resources. If you are sending for information by post put in a SAE as this will save us time and money. If you can type your letter to us it makes it easier for us to read. However we are not prepared to write up your projects for you, check through our website for any information and if what you need is not here try the library, much good information can be found in books and you will learn more by researching it yourself. If you require information on breeding, husbandry, training and so on. Get hold of the books produced by Jemima Parry-Jones especially for this purpose. We would ask all students please not to write to us for information that is available in books in the library or on the internet. We are extremely short of time and not keen to add extra work to our already heavy load. The best way to get advice is to visit and then you will see what we do and how we do it, this is the best form of learning. Or come on one of our courses which are designed to help.
