You must plant at least one male if you are going to have holly berries. Make sure the sex of the plant is marked on the pot tag. An annual dressing of acid will keep your blue holly blue. Easy to grow. Planning is perhaps the most important step to a successful habitat. A good place to start is to make a list of the birds and other wildlife you want to attract. Don Roberson s detailed guide to birding in each of the world s biogeographic regions.
http://www.montereybay.com/creagrus/world.html
The American Birding Association's [ABA] Rules Committee devised a fine scheme that divided the World into nine non-overlapping Regions for purposes of bird listing around the World. This was a concept created and promoted by the Rules Committee chairman at the time, Bob Pyle, and in the end some excellent decisions about the dividing lines were made and published (I was a member of the Committee at the time of these deliberations). Yet, for purposes of showing photos of different areas of the World, I find that I prefer to consider them from a somewhat different perspective. I, too, have nine "Realms" but they are defined a bit more along biogeographic grounds and serve better the purposes I have here. These are ( click on the link to bring up a separate page for each Realm NORTH AMERICA WESTERN PALEARCTIC ASIA NEOTROPICS ... AUSTRALASIA OCEANS OCEANIC ISLANDS ANTARCTICA
  • Without getting into detailed definitions, but to outline the areas covered, suffice it to say that I start with the ABA definitions but make these modifications:
I split Eurasia avifaunally giving separate identities to Asia and to the Western Palearctic but use the ABA's definition for distinguishing between Asia and Australasia (the line is between Sulawesi and Halmahera) I include North Africa, Europe, and the Middle East in a Western Palearctic Realm that mirrors the boundaries of the

Llano Estacado Audubon Society Welcome to the Llano Estacado Audubon Society (LEAS) web site.
We are a chapter of the National Audubon Society
located in the South Plains of west Texas.
The Llano Estacado Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems –
focusing on birds, other wildlife and habitat –
for the benefit of human heritage and the earth’s biological diversity. Links to text files have been converted to Adobe pdf files. If you do not have the Acrobat Reader on your computer, you can download a free version from this website and follow Steps 1, 2 and 3. LEAS, centered in Lubbock, has a very well-kept birding secret: we have 296 regularly-occurring (non-accidental/hypothetical) species in our territory! Adding accidental and hypothetical birds brings our species tally to 432. To put this in context, the bird list for the entire state of Texas is 621. Positioned within the Central Flyway and encompassing diverse habitats (including canyons, farmlands, grasslands, thousands of playa wetlands, rangelands, reservoirs, riparian areas, saline lakes, and urban areas), the LEAS territory is vital for birds, especially neotropical migrants and wetland birds. Llano Estacado translates to "Staked Plains," a name given by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado in 1540.

Don Roberson s very detailed site, including 10 personal favorite species.
    http://www.montereybay.com/creagrus/neotropics.html
    NEOTROPICS
In the Neotropics (Central and South America) there are more species of birds than anywhere else in the world. Habitats range from high Andean mountains to the barren coast of southern Peru and Chile, from active volcanoes along the spine of Central America to the pampas of Argentina, and the incredible Amazon basin. Numerous micro-habitats exist in lowland tropical jungles there are birds who are transitory island specialists in the larger rivers, birds found only in seasonally flooded forest, and birds that specialize in bamboo. It is too bad that from time to time political instability or the drug trade make various sites unsafe, but there remains a wealth of areas to explore:

Michael and Diane Porter are avid birdwatchers. They've been reviewing binoculars and spotting scopes for Bird Watcher's Digest since 1993, with their most recent review in January, 2005. They've surveyed hundreds of binoculars and scopes, testing them for optical qualities and noting the fit-and-feel characteristics of each instrument. In each survey, a team of Iowa birders helped by trying out the optics and contributing their considered opinions. Some of their articles and reviews are posted here.
    SPOTTING SCOPES
Birding Scopes: Angled or Straight (2005) lays out the advantages of angled scopes for birders. What's New in Birding Scopes? From the March, 2003, Bird Watcher's Digest survey, "Taking a Complete Look at Scopes," by Michael and Diane Porter. Scope Basics: How to Choose the Scope That's Right for You (2000) explains obective lens, eyepiece erecting prisms, aperture, magnification, eye relief, chromatic aberration, birding vs. astronomical scopes, and aiming devices. The First Telescope : a Historical Note tells how the telescope was invented, and what was the first thing anyone ever saw through a telescope.

birding tours and environmentally responsible travel in South America.
    http://www.FocusTours.com
If you are interested in seeing and learning about wildlife and natural history, Focus Tours can help you get the tour you are looking for. Douglas B. Trent, Focus Tours' President, is an ecologist who lived in Brazil for over 11 years. He started Focus Tours in 1981 with the goal of using tourism for environmental education and to raise funds for conservation work. While living in Brazil, he guided around 200 days a year in various parts of Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. Together with the experience of his business partner Alessandra Madile (Sales Manager), and our other two guides, we easily have operated more nature and birding tours in these areas than any of our competitors. For the majority of our nearly 25 years of operating nature and birding tours, we have acted as the ground (inbound) operator for American and European nature and birding tours companies. We also offer our services directly to the public. This means you can take the same birding tours, with the same guides, often for substantially less expense. We are also able to offer you tours on your schedule , and design them to meet your specific needs. English-speaking naturalists guide all of our birding tours. They carry the equipment that will make a difference in how much you see: a spotting telescope, tape recorder and microphone to bring rare animals into view, and a powerful spotlight for night viewing. In addition, we provide checklists of the birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians of each area we tour, with common English and Latin names. These help tour participants not just keep track, but also learn the animals they see.
