Birding in Cincinnati
Although it's not a prime destination for traveling birders, Cincinnati provides plenty of interesting birding opportunities. This web site is intended to help both local and visiting birders find birds in this area. But this web site is not just for birders, it is also written by birders. Although I've set up the framework for the site, much of the content has been written by others. The sightings log and the message board depend almost entirely on your input. And a number of entire pages have been contributed by others. I hope you enjoy your visit here on the web site; and I hope you enjoy exploring the Cincinnati area looking for birds. If you live in the area, you might want to consider joining the Cincinnati Bird Club Comments? Suggestions?
Let me know!

Thursday, September 8, 2005 Several years ago, a reporter covering one of the hurricanes that hit Wilmington, I believe it was Fran, was heard saying as the eye passed over, "What the #@%! are all these birds doing flying around?" To birders in the area listening to the report they were just the words they were waiting for. The storm was going to 'dump' pelagic birds in their lap. Assuming they can get out to see them! We are at the height of the hurricane season. We should know how to protect ourselves, loved ones, and property. But once that is taken care of we should also have some ideas of what type of birds could show up unexpectedly. Storm blown seabirds look for large bodies of water to take refuse in once the storm has come inland. With Lake Norman and Lake Wylie near by there is always a good possibility of a 'fall out' in our area after storms. Taylor Piephoff will share with us some of his exciting finds after various hurricanes and other weather related events and explain how these rare and unusual birds find their ways into our backyards. He'll also give us some hints on where to look for these birds. So blow on in to the first Mecklenburg Audubon Meeting of the season on Thursdays, September 8th at 7:30 PM in the fellowship hall of the Sharon Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Columbus Audubon Avid Birders
Avid Birders are interested enough in birding to get out of bed very early for day-long field trips. The only requirements to join us are enthusiasm, binoculars, and a reliable alarm clock. A spotting scope is often useful, but not required. You do not have to be a member of Columbus Audubon to come along.
Trips involve no lengthy or arduous hiking, although we occasionally traverse snow, loose sand, or rocks, and several miles of leisurely walking is often called for. We can accommodate an unlimited number of persons on most trips; occasionally, longer trips out of state are planned, and these are usually limited to a small number of participants. The longer trips fill up early, and first priority is reserved for those who participate regularly on the weekend trips.
Unless otherwise noted, participants should meet at the southwest corner of the Worthington Mall parking lot at the designated time. Worthington Mall is located on the northeast corner of High Street and Wilson Bridge Road, just south of I-270. Bring a sack lunch, and remember we encourage carpooling. Please reimburse your driver for travel expenses. Dress appropriately; remember that the weather to our north, particularly along the windy Lake Erie shore, is often a lot colder than that in Columbus.
Most of us are very interested in finding unusual Ohio species. Because we have access to good up-to-the-minute news about rarities, destinations shown below may change without notice, even en route.

Birding America The Ivory-billed Woodpecker is rediscovered in Arkansas! And, recording devices put in place after my sighting at the White River in 2003 capture a pair of ivorybills communicating ~ convincing the doubters that the birds truly still exist! Give a click to learn more! I'm delighted to announce that well-known wildlife artist Wilhelm Goebel is painting an image of my sighting at the White River. For any of you who might have missed the news ~ a pair of ivorybills has been recorded at the White River, silencing the debate about whether or not the bird's existence has been verified. As the only person to report seeing an Ivorybill at the White River since 1910, I'm very pleased that Wil is painting my experience. Wil has previously depicted the Ivorybill in this wonderful painting: The new painting will be of a male ivorybill in flight ~ as I saw it when the bird flew up from the flooded forest floor. Wil has asked me to join him in signing the limited edition of prints that will be available. Details are coming soon on this lovely celebration of the rediscovery of the Ivory-billed Woodpecker!
