New! Just In. This is a great new CD for birds of midwestern and eastern USA. It plays the song and THEN tells you what the bird is. And it gives a mnemonic for each song. Read more details.
Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs: Eastern Region
audio CD These are sound recordings of 374 birds of eastern North America, to play on your audio cassette player or audio CD player. Most of these songs were recorded by Lang Elliott, a passionate and inspired recordist. For most species, several different sounds are given, with an average of 3-5 different sounds per bird, and about 40 seconds per bird. The sounds are in the same order as the birds in the Stokes Eastern field guide, so it's easy to follow along in the book. The CD version has the useful feature of most species' having separate track numbers, so that they can be instantly accessed. Diane's evaluation: One of the wonderful things about this collection is the accompanying 64-page booklet, which describes each bird's sounds in words. This is a great help to people who find it easy to learn by reading. The booklet also describes the contexts in which the sounds are given, such as "the song of a territorial male," or "begging calls of the young at the nest."

    http://www.naturepark.com/sound2.htm
Know Your Bird Sounds? The best way to watch birds is to actually listen for them! Most often we step into a forest, watch for movement, see none and decide there is no-one around.
What you need to do is LISTEN!
Step into the forest, close your eyes and listen. After you hear the bird calls, (and you will if the background noise isn't too loud), you can then use your eyes to look for where the sounds are coming from. You can use the pattern of the calls to help you figure out what bird is making the sound. Listen to the sound and see if it "speaks" to you. For example, a Robin calls out "cheerio, cheer-y-up, cheerio" and a Barred Owl calls "Who cooks for you. Who cooks for you all?". By connecting a phrase to a type of bird will help you to remember the sound the next time you hear it. Click on the bird sound and listen.
Use the habitat as a clue. Click on the answer bar to find the answer. Forest Bird Sound 1 Answer for Sound 1 Bird Sound 2 Answer for Sound 2 ... Answer for Sound 5 Field Bird Sound 8 Answer for Sound 8 Bird Sound 9 Answer for Sound 9 ... Answer for Sound 11 More sounds from other habitats will be added over time. Come back and visit! We invite you to choose a safe nature park nearby, go with another adult or two and listen to the birds. If you hear a sound you can't identify, sit quietly and watch, eventually the singer will show themselves and you can use a field guide to find out what bird it is. Binoculars can be useful too.

    130. The Raven's Aviary - Corvidae Sounds
Sound files and description of the calls of the birds in the Corvidae family.
    http://www.shades-of-night.com/aviary/sounds/sounds.html
The raucous call of the crow is familiar to everyone who has spent any time in their vicinity. It's a far cry from the melodious tunes produced by many of the songbirds, but once you get used to it, it has a charm all its own. In addition to their harsh calls and occassional jaded shrieks, most corvids have a repertoire of chirps, rattles, and other odd noises which are less frequently associated with them. Crows and ravens are also great copycats, and have been known to to imitate noises made by other birds - or dogs, cats, humans, and even alarm clocks. The following calls are those more regularly associated with the corvidae family... Raven: 159K wav file
Description: This raven (Corvus corax) call was recorded when the bird was being harassed by a pair of Phainopeplas. Visit Doug VonGausig's site ( Naturesongs.com ) for a better description of the recording.
    Naturesongs.com

    Raven: 43K wav file
Description: A couple quick calls by Corvus corax
Source: From European Birds - Songs and Sonograms
    Australian Raven: 210K au file
Description: the very distinctive call of the Australian Raven (Corvus coronoides) - 2 or 3 strong caws, trailing off to a mournful sigh. The bird repeats this a couple times, and then seems to be joined by another doing the same.

    The Texas Bird Sound Library
The Texas Bird Sound Library was established by Dr. Ralph Moldenhauer in The Department of Biological Sciences at Sam Houston State University to provide a repository for recorded bird sounds. These sounds are available for researchers, educators, and the general public. Although there are at least five major institutional collections of bird sounds in the United States, none are located in Texas or the south central states. It is not the intent of this library to compete with any of the other larger libraries but instead it is intended to serve as a regional library and primarily a Texas library. The major goals of the library are:
    • To establish a collection of Texas bird songs, calls, and other sounds that, with adequate corresponding data, will be made available to research scientists, educators, and other persons interested in bird acoustics. To serve as a repository for recorded bird sounds resulting from completed individual research projects. The recordings are catalogued and properly stored so that they will be available for future use. To establish a Texas Bird Sound Record File for documentation of unusual species, state records, or declining species.

Bird Sound Library Still Going Strong
Diane Neudorf W hen you think of libraries at Sam Houston State University, odds are the Newton Gresham and Peabody are the ones that come across your mind first. What most people aren't aware of, however, is that there is another library here that has been in existence for over 20 years. No, it has no books. There aren't any chairs or desks, either. In fact, the library exists in a closet-sized room. The Texas Bird Sound Library was created in 1979 by former Sam Houston State professor Ralph Moldenhauer and adjoins the bottom floor Lee Drain Building office of Diane Neudorf, current biology professor and director of the library. It is modest in appearance with a shelf for bird sound recordings and a cabinet for sound-analyzing gear. It began when one of Moldenhauer's students collected bird sounds for a graduate thesis.

    QUICK GUIDE TO BIRD SONGS
    For Beginning Birders
    by Ben Poscover
Spring migration is over and you have been delighted at seeing the birds that it brings. Now leaves are on the trees and birds have established their territories. Viewing them has become more difficult. You know that birds are present because you can hear them, but the bird that you are trying to identify is always behind a leaf. This brings you to the next step in birding: identifying bird songs and calls. This will add another dimension to your birding. As you enjoy re-identifying old friends and recognizing new ones by sight, you will be equally delighted in being able to recognize some by their songs and calls. There are several aids that are available to assist you in this endeavor: field guides, tapes, videos, etc. One of the more satisfactory strategies is to associate some type of mnemonic with the bird sounds that you hear. For example, some birds seem to identify themselves by "saying" their names such as the Carolina Chickadee with its "chickadee-dee-dee" sound. Others have distinct sounds such as the "drink-your-tea" of the Rufous-sided Towhee. Blending these sound helpers with the songs and calls of birds is both fun and helpful. Following is a list of 53 that might assist you in getting started. These sound types were gleaned from a variety of sources. Field guides usually have helpers like these somewhere in the narrative. Tapes such as Richard Walton and Robert Lawson's *Birding by Ear* use them (in fact, some of the headings of this list are from their program). Some come from individuals who use this device in teaching. Rob Mardiney of Irvine Nature Center sent me a list of those he uses, and I have incorporated them into this effort. As you continue birding, you will enjoy making up your own helpers. One thing about them is that they are a great aid in learning bird sounds.
