A four 33 1/3 RPM record set of the National Geographic Society's "Guide to Bird Sounds". The recordings include the sounds of 179 species, you will hear some very unmusical "songs" - the hooting of owls, the grating cries of terns, and the clapping and clicking of rails - as well as some quite melodious ones. Each record (I call them records rather than albums as they are made of a flimsy plastic, rather than the hard vinyl of albums) measures 9" in diameter and lists the bird sounds it contains. The inside of the record cover also lists the bird calls, in order, and each bird is announced prior to it's sound on the record. The records and cover are in excellent condition, as though they were seldom used. These would be a great go-with for birding field guides or a nice diversion for cage birds, but no matter how they are used, I'm sure you'll be pleased (and know your bird sounds quite well, in time!) 86. The Mayan Pyramid - David Lubman
David Lubman of the Acoustical Society of America argues that the echo sounds like the primary call of the Mayan sacred bird, the Quetzal.
http://www.ocasa.org/MayanPyramid.htm
An archaeological study of chirped echo from
the Mayan pyramid of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza
by David Lubman
Acoustical Consultant
This is a concise summary of a paper to be given at the October 12-16, 1998 meeting of the
Acoustical Society of America in Norfolk, VA. Handclaps evoke chirped echoes from the staircases of the Pyramid of Kukulkan at Chichen Itza. The physics of the chirped echo can be explained quite simply as periodic reflections from stepfaces. But until now, no one has bothered to do so. What is very interesting is that the chirped echo sounds arguably like the primary call of the Mayan sacred bird, the resplendent Quetzal. This magnificent bird, now near extinction, has for thousands of years represented the "spirit of the Maya". Spirits, in many traditions, speak in echoes. Think of the legend of Echo and Narcissus in the western tradition. Echo, lacking a body, was pure spirit.

Hello and welcome to Bird Friends Of Lake Murray And San Diego County . Living near Lake Murray has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to observe many of the local and migrating birds. This site is designed to display the photographs that I take and to share what I learn about the many birds of this area.
Each bird page below contains a brief description of the bird, where the bird was seen, and one or more photos. Some pages also contain a sound clip of the bird. Please note that some birds may say they were photographed at another location outside the county, these photos are only used if I have seen the bird within the county, but wasn't able to get a photo of it at the time. San Diego has hundreds of different birds that visit/live here and this site is updated frequently. If you would like to be notified when new birds are added, then please join the mailing list

Please sign my guestbook with any comments you may have. You can also view the guestbook . If you find any mistakes, have suggestions, questions, or have recently seen a bird around the county that is not listed below, please feel free to send me e-mail.

Guide to Animal Sounds on the Net
New and improved!
  • Reorganized for easy access. Within each order or family, the links to animal sounds are being rearranged by site. This tends to group animals from the same part of the world together, and also makes it easier for me to keep the listing up to date.
  • Non-English names. For the first time, I'm starting to include the names of the animals in languages other than English, as well as the English translation. To display all of these languages on the same page requires Unicode. You may need to upgrade your browser or install special fonts to see these languages (consult the documentation for your browser).
There are many samples of animal sounds on the World Wide Web and FTP sites, but finding them takes some patience and a bit of luck. It can be an interesting exercise to find particular animal sounds through search engines such as Alta Vista or HotBot , but it's much more convenient to have an index specifically for animal sounds. That's why I started this page. I've tried to group related animals together for convenience, and translate non-English ones to the best of my ability, but there will inevitably be some mistakes and discrepancies.

Defenders of Wildlife
1101 Fourteenth St.
Suite 1400
Washington, DC
Tel: 202-682-9400
Fax: 202-682-1331 STATUS: Once a common sight in the forests of the eastern United States, the cerulean warbler is vanishing at an alarming rate. Since 1966 its numbers have declined by 70 percent, due primarily to habitat fragmentation and destruction in both its breeding and winter ranges. In October 2000, 28 conservation organizations, including Defenders of Wildlife, petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list this species as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. To date, the Service has not taken any action. DESCRIPTION: A small, sky-blue insect eater most often seen flitting around the upper canopy of mature deciduous eastern forests. IDENTIFICATION FEATURES: As with most warblers, males and females look quite different from each other. The male is bright cerulean blue above and white below. He has wide white wing bars, a narrow black breast band and black streaks along his flanks. The female is dull turquoise above with a pale blue crown and yellowish-white below. She also has wide white wing bars but does not have a breast band or distinctive streaking. SONG: Only the male warbler sings and his vocalization is quite distinctive - rapid buzzy notes on one pitch followed by a short series of rising and accelerating notes, ending with a high buzzy trill. 99. Blue Jay
Contains sounds and facts about this common North American bird.
http://birds.cornell.edu/BOW/BLUJAY/
Blue Jay
Cyanocitta cristata Cool fact: Infamous as a destroyer of eggs and nestlings, Blue Jays actually derive only a small percentage of their annual food needs from these sources. Its diet is mostly vegetarian, including especially acorns, beech nuts, and seeds. Blue Jays also eat a variety of animal foods including grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars, and small vertebrates. Blue Jays are intelligent and adaptable, taking advantage of almost any food resource, and will readily take to back yard bird feeders. Nonmigratory populations of Blue Jays store food such as acorns in bark crevices or in the soil. Listen to a recording of a Blue Jay from the
Library of Natural Sounds: Blue Jay sounds Common, conspicuous, and noisy, Blue Jays are capable of making a wide variety of sounds. In addition to the loud and often heard jay! jay! call, a bell-like tull-ull call, a melodious whistled teekle, and a variety of chattering, harsh notes and growls may be heard. Blue Jays also produce a remarkable imitation of the scream of a Red-shouldered Hawk. When around the nest, Blue Jays become more quiet. The nest is usually situated between 8 and 20 feet up in a coniferous, or occasionally, deciduous tree. The nests of other passerines are sometimes appropriated by these jays. The female incubates most of the eggs, and she may be fed by the male while on her nest. Both parents bring food for the hatchlings. In late summer and fall, Blue Jays travel in small flocks and family groups.
