Bird sounds distinguish species better than any other trait. Increasing day length stimulates the production of the hormones that drive male birds to sing. They sing through the spring and early summer to establish territories and to attract mates. A female bird evaluates a male bird’s desirability as a partner by a careful examination of his vigour, usually expressed as bright plumage or the quality of his song. A male must be a successful forager to have enough energy to grow bright new feathers or to sing constantly during the spring courtship period. Brightly feathered male birds use appearance to intimidate rivals or catch the attention of females. In contrast, the muted plumage of some female birds seems intended for camouflage. Bright feathers or singing must make males much more susceptible to predation. All bird species have calls to their own kind, which they know when they are hatched. Alarm calls signal danger and location calls keep families or flocks in contact with each other. Generally, the birds with the elaborate songs belong to the least conspicuously coloured male birds.

That's perhaps the chief reason the "mocker" was adopted as the state bird of Texas in 1927. The song of the mockingbird is, in fact, a medley of the calls of many other birds. Each imitation is repeated two or three times, then another song is started, all in rapid succession. In the above sample audio file, the songs of four distinct species were recorded in the span of about seven seconds. It is common for an individual bird to have as many as 25-30 songs in its repertory. The mockingbird is also known as a fierce protector of its nest and environment. It is sometimes seen swooping down on a dog, cat or predator that may be venturing too close to the bird's protected territory. The mimus polyglottos , as the mockingbird is known scientifically, is about ten inches in length, including its relatively long tail. It has a light gray coat and a whitish underside. I have been using this CD-ROM for the last year to review, study, and double-check my Bolivian bird song recordings. The CD-ROM format offers several advantages over cassette tapes and compact disks. One is quantity of information. Bird Sounds of Bolivia contains more than seven hours of bird sounds and hundreds of pages of stored text. The search function is another. I depend upon it greatly. To check a slight rattle, I enter woodpecker, click a few species' songs to get the rattle idea, then I can type woodcreeper to click through their rattle sounds. If I am still unsure, I can quickly type and click the common antbird species. Within 10 seconds, I can listen to any species that is available. The CD-ROM has little field practicality, but then again, my Ridgely and Tudor Birds of South America books do not get into the field much either. The CD-ROM cannot be used in the field as a playback tool, something that the compact disk format excels at.

This situation has now been admirably remedied and the guides to the birds of the region are now as good as any. Morocco and The Gambia are probably two of the most popular destinations but Cameroon, Ghana and Cote' d'Ivoire have been well set up for visiting birders and we offer a good selection of trip reports for these countries in other pages. Visitors to The Gambia and Senegal will be pleased that they have their own field guide which is excellent and also an associated sound guide. The Birds of Gambia and Senegal is highly recommended. For the North African countries - the Birds of North Africa and the Middle East is well worth having although many of the species will be readily recognised by European visiting birders and a good European guide may suffice. For sub-Saharan western Africa, the choice is limited and therefore made slightly easier! Birds of Western Africa by Borrow and Demey is a remarkable work and is a fantastic reference work but definitely not one for carrying around in the field. Van Perlos checklist is a much better option but definitely have a copy of the larger work in the car or at home - although the checklist has a huge number of small illustrations, it does lack substantial details and more detail will be needed to sort out those forest greenbuls!

Now a CSIRO Honorary Fellow, he is the volunteer curator of the Sound Library at the Australian National Wildlife Collection. In this role he manages a unique collection of wildlife sounds comprising over 60,000 recordings of birds, frogs, mammals and insects, mostly from Australia but also from New Guinea, New Zealand, the Antarctic and a number of other countries around the world. "There’s no other large collection of wildlife sounds in Australia or New Zealand, this is easily the largest," he says. "And it would probably rank as the fifth or sixth best collection in the world." A great deal about the lyrebird and the role of mimicry in birds has been learnt from the study. For example, Robinson suggested that mimicry serves what he called a ‘phatic’ function: rather than having any specific meaning, the long and complex song of the lyrebird and other mimics is a form of socialisation employed by birds with large territories and little physical or visual contact with their neighbours. Nonvocal Sounds W hen we think of bird sounds, singing is the first thing that comes to mind. But many birds have found other ways of generating acoustical signals to serve functions usually accomplished by songs. Some bird sounds used in territorial and courtship displays are produced with their bills, feet, wings, or tails. Many songbirds clack their bills, but otherwise the use of such sounds in displays is limited primarily to species with poor singing abilities and occurs infrequently among the passerines. Mated storks and albatrosses often communicate with bill clattering and bill tapping, but the best-known use of bills to produce auditory displays among North American birds is the drumming of several woodpecker species. Both sexes engage in loud rhythmical drumming by striking their bills against a hollow or dried branch or, to the annoyance of many homeowners, metal gutters, stovepipes, drainpipes, and even trash cans! In the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker, and Hairy Woodpecker, drumming functions much as song does to proclaim territorial boundaries and to attract mates. Males of the eight hummingbird species that breed widely north of the Mexican border employ wind-and-feather-derived sounds in their territorial and courtship displays. Male Broad-tailed Hummingbirds use a shrill wing whistle when defending courting territories. Birds experimentally silenced by placing a thin film of glue on the tips of the noise-making primary feathers defended their territories less effectively. Presumably they could not communicate threat and were generally less aggressive because they did not hear their own buzzing flight.
