An introduction to bird song, the apparatus and the reasons behind it.

For information on
bird ears and hearing
see :- Bird Ears Bird song is one of the wonders of the natural world. It has uplifted and cheered human beings for as long as history has been recorded and its beauty continues to charm us more than ever in this modern technological world. Most urban homes play host to some song birds and to hear the dawn chorus at the same time as watching the sunrise is a truly beautiful experience. Birds however do not sing to charm humans. Song birds evolved around 60 million years ago, long before any humans were around to listen. For birds, singing is a means of communicating with the world, and mostly this means 'other birds'.
How do Birds make Noises?
Birds do not have a larynx like we do. Instead they have an organ called a syrinx. The syrinx is located much deeper in the bird's body than our larynx is and for many years scientists had little idea how birds actually made sound. Even today there is a lot we do not know. However, by dint of making birds do lots of unnatural things, like sing with fibre-optic scopes down their throats, sing in a helium oxygen atmosphere or sing with their beaks held open, while watching them with infra-red and x-ray cameras scientists have learned a little about how this amazing instrument works. A bird's syrinx is a double instrument that sits deep in a bird's chest at the point where the trachea divides into two bronchi. A part of it rests in each bronchi and each of these halves is capable of making sound. This means that a bird can sing two different notes at the same time, or even sing a duet with itself.

Key to bird calls, songs and sounds This represents the initial page in a guide that allows you to identify sounds made by birds. The guide will ask to respond to whether the sound was simple or complex, musical or harsh, etc. At each point, the choices include descriptions of the attributes of sounds found further along that path, and a list of the bird sounds that will be found further on. For each of these choices, a list of bird sounds that conform to this description is given. If you select one of these from the list, and click on the button labelled "Select bird" you will be presented with a page with a URL pointer to a sound file of that bird, and a text description of the sound you will hear. At each point in the key, select the choice that most nearly characterizes the sound or song you heard. If you change your mind, navigational choices at the top of the page allow you to backtrack to particular choices you made.

The Macaulay Library
has been capturing and maintaining natural sounds since the early 1920s, and includes audio and video recordings of birds, insects, fish, frogs, and mammals. In the mid-1990s, the library staff undertook a massive effort to digitize all assets, and make them available to the public. At the time, a benevolent storage device vendor donated a 5 terabyte system to the cause. But after a lengthy development phase, the limitations of the solution became apparent. We have fewer problems with the PCs connecting to the Apple servers than we did with the PCs connecting to our old, Windows-based storage system.

They Know How the Dead Bird Sings

Identifying extinct bird calls.
By Daniel Engber
Posted Thursday, Aug. 4, 2005, at 4:00 PM PT
The ivory-billed woodpecker's greatest hits On Tuesday, ornithologists who had expressed doubts about the rediscovery of the ivory-billed woodpecker said they are now convinced that the bird is alive and well. New sound recordings of the woodpecker—which hadn't been seen since 1944—brought the skeptics around. " Once everybody hears these vocalizations, you can't help but be convinced ," said one expert. How do ornithologists know what an extinct bird sounds like? They use written descriptions of the bird's call, examples from similar species, and—if they're lucky—sound recordings. Some of the first successful recordings of birds were made on motion-picture sound film beginning in 1929, when Arthur Allen, the founder of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, pointed a microphone at birds in a local park. By the mid-1930s, Allen and his associates were using the technology to make audio and visual records of birds in the field, and in 1935, they managed to record the ivory-billed woodpecker. (Click

In Animals Birds Articles FAQ ... Help Like this page? Send it to a friend! You are here: BBC Animals Birds Want to record the song of some of your local birds? Wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson gives us his top ten hints on recording the perfect bird song. listen to a dawn chorus 1: Why record wildlife sounds? Wildlife sounds enrich our lives, whether it's birdsong in a garden, or the spectacular soundscape of a seabird colony. Capturing these sounds can be an exciting and rewarding experience. 2: Listen. Your ears are an important part of your equipment! Teach yourself to listen afresh. The radio is a good place to start. Hear the range and depth of location sounds on reports, features and documentaries and simply build up your own experiences of the differences you hear and what you like the sound of. 3: Microphones: They need good windshields when used outdoors and need to be of robust design, with a bass cut switch to reduce wind and traffic noise. Sennheiser, Sony, Audio Technica and Beyer all make good microphones and their catalogues have application guides and advice on recording techniques. Microphones can be hand-held but a lightweight tripod or clamp is much better, this prevents handling noise and leaves you free to operate the recorder and watch the action. 4: Recording machines: Mini-disc is a new audio format of high quality. The portable recorders are lightweight, easy to use and have a long battery life. Audiocassette recorders can also record good quality sound. Remember that if you have access to a video camera these can also record sound only - you don't have to record an image as well!

Some Bird Sounds from Bolivia
The following sounds are very short cuts taken from Sjoerd Mayer's CD-ROM "Birds of Bolivia 2.0 / Aves de Bolivia 2.0"
  • Horned Curasssow Pauxi unicornis , song. Recorded by Ross MacLeod, Bolivian Yungas Project, Department of Environmental and Evolutionary Biology, Glasgow University, Scotland. WAV file (263 KB) or MP3 file (96 KB).
  • Huayco Tinamou Rhynchotus maculicollis , song. Also heard are a song of Rufous-collared Sparrow Zonotrichia capensis and a song of Gray-bellied Flowerpiercer Diglossa carbonaria WAV file (59 KB) or MP3 file (29 KB).
This species was formerly considered a subspecies of Red-winged Tinamou Rhynchotus rufescens , but I discovered it has a very different song (see The Auk, Vol. 113 No. 3 July 1996, p. 695-697). This bird is often heard in the mountains of Bolivia, wherever there are grassy areas on mountain ridges, at altitudes from about 750 m. up to 3500 m. It is not found on the Altiplano, nor in the western mountains.
  • Bolivian Recurvebill Simoxenops striatus , song. Recorded by A. Bennett Hennessey. Also heard is the song of Olive Tanager (aka Carmiol's Tanager)
