On these pages are the sounds of North American birds (Costa Rican birds have their own page, below) - not just bird calls or bird songs, but all the sounds birds make, such as wing sounds and bill rattles. Since most bird species use different vocalizations for different circumstances, I've tried to tell you what the bird was doing at the time of the recording. It has become even more obvious to me during this project that a bird's vocalizations can be nearly as complex in the information they contain as our own. Individuals of a species sing different songs with different "words" and "phrases" than another individual, and the same species from different territories sing about different things in different ways. One of my ongoing trials is what to call the sounds birds make. They sing, they talk, they whinny and squawk and squeak. They chip and chirp and chack, and the cry and crow and caw. Some ducks quack, some whistle, some peep or screech. Some birds bark or croak or grunt or grumble. Many species, at one time or another mutter and mumble and whisper. I find myself making up onomatopoeic names like "Chack" and "Pipe" and "Chuckerring". Flickers have a "Klear" call, Great Blue Herons "Gronk". If you have a name for some bird's sound, share it with me - some day I'll write a bird call thesaurus! Most files are in Windows WAV format, and all have been edited for file size and clarity. Many have been filtered in ways which do not affect the bird's song, but which may highlight the important parts of the sample. Most samples have been reduced to 8-bit resolution and have been "downsampled" from their original 44.1 Khz to save bandwidth and therefore reduce loading times. More exacting sound collectors are encouraged to contact me for larger, unedited and unfiltered versions of these sounds. MP3 files are now available for many of the longer samples. MPeg 3 (MP3) files are compressed files which will downlaod faster than regular WAV files and play perfectly! Typically MP3 files average 8-10% the size of the same WAV file. If you need a MP3 decoder to play these files

SITES WITH BIRDSONGS
The Living Earth, Inc.
GENERAL David Attenborough's The Life of Birds on the PBS website has an introduction to birdsong with seven nice samples (in Real Player format) from around the world: Kakapo, Australian Musk Duck, British "dawn chorus," Wedge-tailed Shearwater, American Streamertail, Calfbird and Superb Lyrebird. No scientific names, no locations. The University of Michigan Museum of Zoology has an Animal Diversity website with Aves , a section containing much detailed information about many species of birds. WorldTwitch has a Bird Sounds page with many useful links, especially to exotic places and species. Mangoverde.com plans to be "a digital field guide to all of the bird species in the world." Currently 3014 records of 1445 species. WildlifeLands Birds Image Archive has "many bird images from all over the globe," many with sound links, all jumbled together. Click on the image to have the bird identified. JungleWalk has a nicely organized collection of links to bird sounds on the web. Pulse of the Planet is a series of 2-minute radio segments produced by the National Geographic magazine. Many of the segments involve birds and play appropriate bird sounds. But the search engine for the audio archive is hard to use. Here are some: "Return of the Wood Thrush" (search under

Next Welcome to my Australian bird site English Nederlands Hi, this site shows a small part of the photos I made on two 6 week trips in Australia in 2001 and 2002. During these trips I became a real fan of birding. The reason is obvious: Australian birdlife is colorful, approachable an prolific. For a more comfortable frames version please enter my site here Non frames site overview A short introduction to this site Links to pictures of all birds species on this site Thumb Nails Other Birding sites Contacting info: Last update: © LUdB 2001, 2002, 2004 Back to Top Short site info In 2001 we traveled 6000km: Cairns - Cooktown, Alice Springs - Uluru, Alice Springs - Darwin - Broome. In 2002 we traveled 9500km: Perth - Exmouth - Augusta - Albany - Perth and Adelaide - Sydney. Most interesting spots: Kakadu NP, Little Desert NP, Cape range NP, Ningaloo Reef NP, Great Barrier Reef NP, Otway NP, Mereenie Loop Road, Olgas, Nitmiluk NP, Litchfield NP, Windjana Gorge, The Kimberley, Yanchep, Daintree NP, Mossman Gorge. I used mounted color slides to scan all the picture shown on the website. Most slides where mounted between AN glass. This is not ideal for scanning but it gives a good impression. You should see the original slides which I made using a Canon EOS 5/EOS 3 and a Canon 100-400 IS L lens.

20. Bird Sounds
Bird songs and sounds in Knutsford Northwest England.
http://www.10x50.com/sounds.htm
The addition of a counter to this page revealed quite a few visitors to this part of the Knutsford Ornithological Society website! Initially (1995) it was an exercise in the production of .wav and .ra sound files for inclusion on a website so others could download them to their own computer. Encouraged by the number of visitors I'll perhaps try and add a few other examples of the songs and sounds of British birds in the months to come.
For most of these sounds two types of file are available
. wav file - slightly better quality than Real Audio, but larger and will therefore take longer to download. No special player required, your system will have one installed.
.rm file - this is a Real Audio file, smaller and quicker to load. Requires RealPlayer a simple (relatively) FREE download and not only will you be able to listen to these recordings but also explore the cutting edge of technology, with real- time video and 100's of radio stations broadcasting live in RealAudio. ** download the FREE player - top right (or search around for it - no need to pay!)**
species arranged in systematic order.
