Usually, more employment opportunities are available in CWS than there are qualified graduates. Producers require annual inputs such as seed, fertilizers and herbicides, so they seek assistance in sales or service areas such as crop consulting, chemical application and soil testing each year. Therefore, opportunities for CWS graduates usually have been more stable than for employment areas where inputs can be deferred when income is low. Also, salaries for CWS graduates are at or near the top among all graduates in agriculture.
The employment opportunities in CWS can best be summarized by the jobs that our graduates have accepted. Our graduates have been employed as: (1) crop production consultants (agronomist); (2) marketing experts for herbicides, fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals; (3) managers of farm service centers for cooperatives and elevators; (4) agents in the production and marketing of certified seeds; (5) research technicians for private companies and universities; (6) natural resources conservationists and agents for other governmental agencies; (7) county agricultural extension agents; (8) field representatives for sugarbeet or food processing companies; (9) farm managers; (10) farm insurance agents; (11) research associates with private plant breeding companies; and (12) persons involved in the reclamation of strip-mined land.

    MONOCULTURAL FOOD
by Nicholas Schoon The fungus that started the Irish potato famine 150 years ago and killed at least 1.5 million peopleabout one fifth of the populationthrough starvation and diseases such as typhus, is coming back with a vengeance. The potato late blight, Phytophthora infestans, which can transform a green field of potatoes into a rotting mass within days, is held at bay with large applications of fungicide. Attempts at breeding more resistant crops have achieved only partial success. The European strain of the fungus, known as A1, which used to reproduce asexually, started to mate with a Mexican strain, A2 in 1976. The two can produce oosphoresmicroscopic eggswhich can lie in the soil over winter and infect the next crop to be planted. The new strain will also possess greater genetic potential to mutate further resistance to new fungicides. This is yet another example of the factnot well known to the eating publicthat much of our food is now genetically vulnerable. More serious than the potato, is the plight of all the different varieties of cereals. The plant geneticists are only able to keep a year or two ahead of the viruses that inevitably hit each new type that is developed. Monoculture is a very dangerous game and politicians, who are usually lawyers rather than scientists, are almost totally oblivious of the facts.

ON SEEDS AND BIOTECHNOLOGY IN AFRICA
Sirte, Libya, 5 July 2005 Your Excellency, Mr Olusegun Obasanjo, President of the African Union, Your Excellency, Colonel El Gheddafi, Leader of the Great First-of-September Revolution of the Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Your Excellency, Mr Konare, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Your Excellencies, Heads of State and Government, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, I. Seed Production The first of human rights is the right to exist. To this effect, we need water to drink and food to eat. Food security is heavily dependent on the seed availability to farmers. However, genetic resources for food and agriculture are being lost at a very rapid rate, as farming systems modernize. It is estimated that some 10,000 species have been used for human food and agriculture. Currently no more than 20 cultivated plant species provide 90% of human food. A mere 4 plant species (potatoes, rice, maize and wheat) and 3 animal species (cattle, pigs and chickens) provide more than 50% of all human food. The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture which entered into force in June 2004 provides a coherent framework in which governments can develop and implement a strategy for the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture. The Treaty also recognises, for the first time in a binding international instrument, Farmers' Rights. Africa is leading the way with 23 African countries out of a total of 71 having ratified it.

    Abstract
US sales to reach $2.9 billion in 2006
US sales of agricultural biotechnology products will rise 6.3 percent per year to $2.9 billion in 2006. Over the same period, arable land devoted to transgenic crops (genetically modified organisms, GMOs) is expected to reach 102 million acres, up from about 93 million acres in 2001. Transgenic seeds and crops will continue to dominate sales of agricultural biotechnology products based largely on rising demand for insectprotected and/or herbicidetolerant soybeans, corn and cotton. Most long-term growth in the market value of transgenic seeds and plants will be spurred by the development of crops adding beneficial, value-added output traits (e.g., vitamin-fortified rice, cholesterol-lowering corn). Crops of this type will provide producers with more opportunities to appeal directly to consumers. Plants capable of pharmaceutical, chemical and vaccine manufacture wlll also become a commercial reality over the next decade Soybeans, cotton, corn to remain dominant
