GENERAL INTRODUCTION
This course Aims to develop students core research and project management skills: by providing students with a broad understanding of research processes, the nature of research problems and issues, and of systematic and logical approaches to research; and by equiping students with essential skills, techniques and approaches common to a wide range of research activities. The Objectives are that, by the end of the module, students should be able to:
  • distinguish, with reasons, between good and poor research reports; identify elements, organisation and processes which contribute to the production of sound and coherent research reports; produce feasible and competent research proposals and plans; present these plans and be able to defend them.
By the end of the module students should have developed all of their core skills as follows: written communication (via report writing); interpersonal communication (via working in allocated groups and liaisons with supervisors and third parties); oral presentation (via presentations); teamwork (via working in groups); planning and organising (via the 20 credit module running over two semesters and at a pace dictated by the group); problem solving (via exposure to real world problems with data and third parties); initiative (via students being in control of their own projects); adaptability (via exposure to real world problems with data and third parties); numeracy (via data collection and analysis); and computer literacy (via the use of word processors, statistical, bibliographic and presentation software).

Biotechnology and Tomato Fruit Ripening
In 1990 I started a B.Sc. In Plant Biotechnology at Wye College , part of Imperial College, London (but actually in Kent). I graduated in 1993, whereupon I started a PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham My Ph.D. work concerned the characterisation of Pectinesterase isoforms in tomato. The project was funded jointly by the and Zeneca Plant Science The enzyme Pectinesterase (EC 3.1.1.11) is found in all plants, and many plant pathogens. The enzyme is especially abundant in tomato, where it has been most extensively studied. In tomato, the enzyme has been detected in fruit, leaves and roots. In particular, the fruit contain very high levels of the enzyme, leading to the theory that it has an important role in fruit ripening and softening [ Column chromatography has been able to separate PE into distinct isoforms. The dominant isoform in tomato is called PE2. This isoform is fruit specific, and appears to increase during ripening. Most work on PE has concentrated on this isoform, due to the large amount of it in tomato fruit, and its ease of extraction. The enzyme has been purified, and genes coding for the enzyme have also been isolated. PE2 has been previously 100% downregulated in tomato using antisense inhibition [

FAO SAYS INVEST MORE IN AGRIC AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) called for increased investment in agriculture and rural areas of developing countries to improve economic opportunities and reduce hunger where most of the world's poor live. Speaking at a recent meeting of world leaders at the United Nations, Dr. Jacques Diouf said: "Despite a growing body of evidence that shows most poor and hungry people depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, many developing countries continue to spend far too little on agriculture and rural development. In countries where undernourishment is most widespread, the share of government spending devoted to agriculture falls far short of matching the sector's importance in the economy." As hunger and malnutrition are both a cause and an effect of poverty, and 70 percent of the poor live in rural areas, he called for direct measures to support improved access to food, especially through income generated by employment in secured, productive and thus competitive agricultural activities.

DIVISIONS
Biotechnology
The Biotechnology Division of the Agricultural Research Council’s Vegetable and Ornamental Plant Institute is situated at Roodeplaat, near Pretoria. The Division specialises in research on vegetables, ornamental plants, indigenous and grain crops. The Biotechnology Division offers expertise in research, development, and transfer of biotechnology products and services to resource poor and commercial farmers, plant breeders and other agricultural organisations. Research projects have been identified and implemented by the Biotechnology Division with the aim of developing new cultivars better suited to South African conditions. The research group of the Biotechnology Division actively promotes collaboration with other ARC institutes, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), universities, agricultural industries and the National Department of Agriculture. There are five focus groups that share research programmes within the Biotechnology Division: Abiotic stress Drought and heat are some of the main factors limiting agricultural productivity world-wide. The aim of this programme is to improve agricultural crops through identification and evaluation of traits associated with drought and heat tolerance in higher plants. Experience on drought screening includes crops such as potato, soybean
