PC Tweaking Basics: The System BIOS
By Vince Freeman
The Core of Configuration In the movies, when the heroine wakes up with amnesia, she puts a hand to her brow and breathes, "Where am I?" When you push your PC's power switch each morning, the machine not only has amnesia but needs to ask, "What am I?" for that first millisecond, it doesn't even know it's a PC, let alone that it has X amount of memory, such-and-such type and size of hard disk, and should stay alert for your keyboard and mouse input. The tool that kick-starts your computer, "teaching" it its configuration, how to access memory, and so on, is the BIOS (basic input/output system) one of the most essential, powerful, and potentially confusing parts of any PC. The BIOS keeps track of the most integral system settings, and serves as a sort of preflight check when you first boot ensuring that your hardware is working properly, and adjusting your system profile and informing the operating system if any new components have been added. It also plays a vital role in CPU performance. This article will present the BIOS basics you need to know before considering any system upgrade. BIOS and CMOS Stored as firmware in a memory chip, the BIOS program reads and, when changes are made, writes or updates the system configuration info stored in a CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) RAM chip on the motherboard. A small lithium battery (which usually lasts for years) lets the low-power CMOS chip store configuration settings and the system date and time even when the PC's turned off. (Though it's not technically correct, the acronyms are often used interchangeably; i.e., the utility that lets you make changes is referred to as both a "BIOS setup screen" and "CMOS setup screen.")

BIOS-Recovery - Rettung in letzter Sekunde...

IRQ
    Endring av IRQ-innstillinger.

My experience is mainly with AMI, Award and Phoenix although I have worked with many branded machines, such as Dell, Compaq, Packard Bell, Apricot for example and although their BIOS look very different the principles are very much the same.
The ROM BIOS Settings
These pages are mainly about Pentium motherboards. There are a lot of settings in our BIOS pages, some from older boards. Each page has comprehensive descriptions of many BIOS fields and options. Any new fields that are later added, will be from ATX motherboards, until that too becomes outdated. There are two things in a computer referred to as BIOS. The ROM BIOS which this page is about and the DOS BIOS which does a similar job on a different level for DOS. The ROM BIOS is a program that provides the most basic low level operations on the computer. The BIOS could be thought of as an interface to the hardware in the computer, somewhere between hardware and software - firmware. As the software is encoded in a type of ROM (Read Only Memory) its contents are not lost after powering off the PC.

A+ Hardware : System Architecture A+ Hardware Service Technician: System Architecture Previous Page Next Page BIOS What is the BIOS? The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is the chip that contains low level software for configuring the system's capabilities and communicating with the hardware. The BIOS previously was stored in the ROM, though most present day computers have the BIOS stored in EEPROM, an electronically erasable programmable ROM. The BIOS communicates between the software and the hardware so fewer conflicts present themselves. BIOS Operation Typically, the BIOS stores its configurations in the CMOS (Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor). The CMOS is powered by a small battery so it can retain its settings after the power is turned off. The CMOS is usually not upgradeable, but the battery used to power it is usually easily upgradeable. Troubleshooting and the BIOS Since the BIOS contains the low level software controlling the computer, you may need to replace it in earlier PCs if you have to upgrade the hard drive.

Software Layer Model Layer # Layer Hardware BIOS Operating System Applications BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System and is software that manages hardware and allows the operating system to talk to the various components. The BIOS is also responsible for allowing you to control your computer's hardware settings, for booting up the machine when you turn on the power or hit the reset button and various other system functions. The term BIOS is typically used to refer to the system BIOS, however, various other components such as video adapters and hard drives can have their own BIOSes hardwired to them. During the rest of this section, we will be discussing the system BIOS. The BIOS software lives on a ROM IC on the motherboard known as a Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor(CMOS). People often incorrectly refer to the BIOS setup utility as CMOS, however, CMOS is the name of the physical location that the BIOS settings are stored in. Basic CMOS Settings:
  • Printer Parallel Port
      Unidirectional - Single direction communication.

The ROM BIOS is a set of programs built into the computer that provides the most basic, low level, and intimate control and supervision of tasks being performed by the computer.
BIOS takes care of the immediate needs of the hardware and isolates all other programs from the details of how the real hardware works.
BIOS is actually a kind of interface between the PC hardware and the software programs that run on the PC.
It actually bridges the gap between the software and the hardware.
It is stored in the firmware or the ROM on the Motherboard
There are three main parts to the ROM BIOS
1: When the PC is booted for the first time. Test and troubleshooting to see that there are no conflicts and that the PC is doing fine. Some of the initialization programs called power on self test.
2: The second and most important part are its routines. These programs are provide the detailed and intimate control of the various parts of the computer, particularly the I/o peripherals, such as disk drives, which require cautious administration. It provides a long list of services that are available for use both by the operating system and by the application programs. 3: The third part of the ROM-BIOS , which is applicable only to the older versions of the PC families is the built in ROM BASIC.This was designed into the machine in the days when every user had to do a lot of programming to make the machine do much useful work. In fact, the earliest PC’s did not even have disk drives, there was no MS DOS. The machine started in
