Chemical Engineering
Chemical Engineers create, design, operate and improve processes, which are vital to our society. Our programs produce broad-based graduates who are prepared for careers not only in the traditional petrochemical industry, environmental engineering, and specialty chemicals, but also in such high technology areas as:
  • biochemical and biomedical engineering, electronic and semi-conductor processing, ceramics, plastics and other high performance materials, and electrochemical processing
Materials Engineering
Materials engineering impacts almost all industrial activity and has been a key enabler of most of the technological advances that have shaped our modern world. Examples range from high strength, light alloys used in aerospace structures to thin film and semi-conductor materials for microelectronic devices that are now so much part of our lives. Materials engineering encompasses a spectrum from new materials development through selection, production and processing of materials for products and structures. It also includes sustainability issues related to our finite materials resources and the impact of materials utilization and disposal on the environment. Biomedical Engineering
Biomedical Engineers apply engineering design and analysis techniques to problems at the interface between physical and biological systems. Our program is broad-based and multidisciplinary, designed to produce graduates who are prepared for careers in the biotech industry, to enter medical school, or to continue their education in graduate or professional school.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Option in Biomedical and Clinical Engineering
code EEBS02) (135 units)
The Department of Electrical Engineering administers an option in Biomedical and Clinical Engineering that allows the student to acquire substantive competence in biomedical engineering and biology. The program builds upon a strong base of biology, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering science to develop a clinically oriented biomedical engineer to serve medical and industrial needs. It includes a core of standard electrical engineering courses as well as courses and laboratories in biomedical engineering, anatomy, physiology and biology. Elective units are available in the senior year to explore individual areas of interest. Students planning to attend medical, dental or other health professional or graduate schools in Biomedical Engineering may select courses in Chemistry and/or Biology with the approval of the BME advisor.
