WHAT IS BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING?
The University of Texas at Austin...Department of Chemical Engineering Engineers combine ideas and skills with materials and energy to render products and services. Engineers help meet a wide variety of our physical needs: food, clothing, buildings, energy, transportation, manufactured articles, communications, labor-saving devices, and conveniences. Public problems require the ability of the engineer to apply technology for the benefit of society. So engineers are builders, managers, researchers, decision makerscreative, dynamic, and people-oriented. Training at the undergraduate level in biomedical engineering is available through the UT College of Engineering in four departments: Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science, and Mechanical Engineering. Biomedical option programs in these departments consist of five to eight life science and chemistry courses chosen to complement the basic work required of all students in each of these major areas. The elective courses in these options are selected to meet the premedical or predental school requirements in the state of Texas. Of course, the biomedical option also prepares a student for graduate study in biomedical engineering or for employment. The College of Engineering offers many services for undergraduate students: financial aid, a placement and career assistance center, a cooperative education program, an extensive engineering library, and professional and honor societies. The Department of Chemical Engineering has many scholarships, a computer lab, and peer tutoring services available to its students.

It is an engineering discipline that is practiced by professionals trained primarily as engineers, who specialize in medical and biological applications. As engineers, BMEs are engaged in design and problem solving. BMEs assert their multidisciplinary expertise for designing new medical instruments and devices, applying engineering principles for understanding and repairing the human body, and for decision making and cost containment using engineering tools. BME is an interdisciplinary profession. BMEs often work in teams consisting of engineers, physicians, biologists, nurses and therapists. The BME undergraduate degree emphasizes engineering design in preparation for employment in biomedical industries and for graduate study. Novel aspects of the undergraduate program include design projects throughout the curriculum supervised by a faculty mentor and a committee of affiliated faculty, clinicians and biomedical industry professionals; industry cooperatives/internships; continuous advising; flexibility in engineering specialization areas; student involvement in program evaluation and improvement; and an option to complete an M.S. degree in just one year after the B.S. degree.
